Jordan Johnson-Doyle: Body found in search for British backpacker who went missing in Malaysia

Independent05-06-2025
A British backpacker who was missing for over a week has been found dead at the bottom of a lift shaft in Malaysia, police have said.
Jordan Johnson-Doyle, 25, vanished after last being seen at a bar in Kuala Lumpur on 27 May.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Commissioner Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said that his body was identified by a relative based on a body tattoo, according to local news website FMT.
The software engineer, from Southport, had spent the past 18 months travelling around across Asia while working remotely for a US company, his mum said.
His mother, Leanne Burnett, told the Liverpool Echo that her son's last known location was Healy Mac's Irish Bar in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur.
He is believed to have then visited a nearby bar called The Social.
She alerted authorities last Friday because she hadn't heard from him in three days.
An appeal on social media read: "My son is missing in Kuala Lumpur.
"Please help us find him, all his family and friends are so worried. Please please share share share."
This week his family flew out to Malaysia to help local officials with the search.
But his body was found in a construction site lift shaft in Bangsar, a suburb of the Malaysian capital, on Wednesday, authorities said.
A post mortem found the cause of death was a chest injury due to a fall from height. Kuala Lumpur police said they are not treating the death as suspicious.
The police chief said in a statement to MalaysiaToday: 'It is hereby confirmed that the body found is that of Jordan Johnson-Doyle who was reported missing on 2 June.
'The cause of death is that of chest injury due to fall from height following an autopsy conducted earlier.
'No criminal elements were found at the scene. The case is classified as a sudden death report.'
An FCDO spokesperson said: "We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Malaysia and are in contact with the local authorities.'
The family previously spoke of their agony during the search.
Ms Burnett told the Liverpool Echo: 'I have been been feeling just sick, numb. I just want to get over there, find him and bring him home.
'I want him to know we're looking for him and we're coming to get him.'

Ex-South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol returns to prison over martial law bid

Former South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol returned to jail on Thursday after a court approved a warrant sought by prosecutors investigating his attempt to impose martial law last year. The Seoul central district court's decision bolstered the special counsel investigation into allegations that Yoon's move in December represented obstruction of justice and abuse of power. The court said in a statement that it granted the request because of concerns Yoon could seek to destroy evidence. The conservative politician already faces criminal charges of insurrection over his martial law decree, and that could carry a sentence of life in prison or death. The former president returned to confinement in the Seoul detention centre about 20km (12 miles) south of the capital after the decision. He spent 52 days in jail earlier in the year but was released four months ago on technical grounds. The constitutional court ousted him as president in April, upholding parliament's impeachment for the martial law bid, which shocked South Koreans and triggered months of political turmoil. The special prosecution team launched its investigation after new leader Lee Jae Myung was elected in June, and it has been looking into additional charges against Yoon. The special counsel team is now expected to speed up its inquiry into allegations, including whether Yoon hurt South Korea's interests by intentionally inflaming tensions with North Korea. Yoon attended the court hearing on Wednesday on the detention warrant, wearing a dark navy suit and a red tie, but did not answer questions from reporters. His lawyers have denied the allegations against him and called the detention request an unreasonable move in a hasty investigation. More than 1,000 supporters rallied near the court on Wednesday, local media reported, waving flags and signs and chanting Yoon's name in 35C heat. In their warrant request, prosecutors said Yoon poses a flight risk, local media reported.

Hunter with a Scalpel – K-drama Episode 14 Recap & Review

Episode 14 Episode 14 of Hunter with a Scalpel begins with the press conference. Se-hyun describes how, from the age of five to ten, she was forced to assist her father in his murders. She lists all the cases and even describes Se-eun, who she wants to save. Yoon Jo-kyun watches the press conference and then looks at Se-eun suspiciously. At the hospital, the detectives share a warm reunion with Jung-hyun. They discuss how Se-hyun's confession isn't concrete proof and she could still be an accomplice to Jo-kyun. But Jung-hyun seems to believe her. Meanwhile, Se-eun considers the watch that Se-hyun gave her and tries to charge it. Se-hyun then visits Jung-hyun. Jung-hyun has her notebook and Se-hyun describes her happy days with Eun-seo. She explains how they ran away and mentions that Eun-seo died, although she's vague on the details. She then collapsed and was found by mountain climbers, who sent her to the orphanage. Jung-hyun then asks her to not finish things alone but to let him help her. Jo-kyun then enters the hospital and puts on a doctor's coat to disguise himself. As Se-hyun is leaving Jung-hyun's room, Jo-kyun pulls her aside. He gives her one last chance to run away with him. If not, he will kill Se-eun as well as Se-hyun's mother. Se-hyun is about to take his hand when a guard suddenly shows up and Jo-kyun leaves. However, a reporter recognises him and decides to follow him. At the police station, Jin-woo tells the others that Se-hyun has passed a lie detector test and also has an alibi for the first two murders. The detectives then discuss Jo-kyun's route and that he is probably going to escape via ship at Yeongpo. Meanwhile, the reporter follows Jo-kyun but eventually loses sight of him. He then sees Se-eun returning from a grocery store and follows her all the way to their hideout. Unfortunately, Jo-kyun takes him by surprise and kills him. A flashback shows Eun-seo and Se-eun running in the forest when Se-eun suddenly stops. Jo-kyun catches up to them and pushes Eun-seo, who falls and hits her head on a rock. The Episode Review Hunter with a Scalpel Episode 14 continues the chase to catch Yoon Jo-kyun and offers a lot of shifting in the process. Se-hyun gets a chance to tell Jung-hyun the honest truth and the other detectives are finally on the right track, working to catch Jo-kyun. Se-hyun's plan to lure Jo-kyun is a good one but when he does turn up, she doesn't alert the detectives. So, what was the point of the press conference? It's confusing and doesn't make sense, considering what a big deal this entire plan was in the previous episode. The rest of the episode fares a lot better. Flashbacks give us more insight into the past and what happened to Eun-seo and Se-eun. We also see more of what's happening at Jo-kyun and Se-eun's end, which offers more thrills and tension than the police side of things. With only two episode to go though, the series will need to start wrapping things up soon. Previous Episode Next Episode Expect A Full Season Write-Up When This Season Concludes!
