Undrafted rookie already making plays at Chargers OTAs
The Chargers are still in the early stages of their roster evaluation process, as today marked the second week of organized team activities (OTAs). Nonetheless, young players are using this time to start catching the attention of the coaching staff.
It was undrafted free agent Stevo Klotz who raised eyebrows on Tuesday. According to team reporter Eric Smith, Taylor Heinicke hit him on a crossing route that turned into a 20-plus-yard gain down the left sideline.
Klotz is a fullback/tight end hybrid who caught a touchdown each of the past two years at Iowa State. Last month, Jim Harbaugh highlighted Klotz, saying that he believes he could be an 'above-average core special teams' player.
Klotz will have competition with Scott Matlock and Tucker Fisk for this specific role, but it's promising to hear that the former Cyclone is already making some noise.

49ers agree to sign CB Eli Apple

The 49ers are adding an experienced veteran to their defense. Cornerback Eli Apple has agreed to a one-year deal with San Francisco, according to agency Universal Sports and Entertainment Management. Apple, 29, signed with the Chargers' practice squad last October and was promoted to the team's active roster last November. He then missed time with a hamstring injury, leading him to appear in just four games in 2024. In 2023, Apple played 10 games with four starts for the Dolphins, recording an interception and nine passes defensed. A Giants first-round pick in 2016, Apple has played 102 career games with 82 starts for the Giants, Saints, Panthers, Bengals, Dolphins, and the Chargers. He's recorded six career interceptions with 61 passes defensed.

Chargers lock in Rashawn Slater with a multi-year extension

The Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday agreed to a multi-year contract extension with left tackle Rashawn Slater, keeping him as Justin Herbert's protector. Slater has started all 52 games at left tackle since being chosen 13th overall in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft out of Northwestern. Last season, he started 16 games including the postseason, as the Chargers' offense committed eight turnovers — the fewest in franchise history and tied for the second-fewest offensive turnovers in a single season in NFL history. As a rookie in 2021, Slater was a second-team All-Pro after leading a front that protected for the No. 4-ranked total offense in the NFL (390.2 yards per game) as Herbert threw for an AFC-best 32 touchdowns. Slater was also named the starting left tackle for the AFC in the Pro Bowl, becoming the first rookie tackle to do so since 2012.

Report: Chargers LT Rashawn Slater lands record extension

Los Angeles Chargers left tackle Rashawn Slater has agreed to a record-setting four-year, $114 million extension, ESPN reported on Sunday. The deal includes a record $92 million guaranteed and makes Slater the highest-paid offensive lineman in history at $28.5 million per season, per the report. Tampa Bay Buccaneers left tackle Tristan Wirfs' contract has an average annual salary of $28.12 million and Detroit Lions right tackle Penei Sewell earns $28 million, according to Spotrac. The Chargers confirmed that they agreed to terms on a multi-year contract extension with the two-time Pro Bowl selection but did not provide any financial details. Slater, 26, was a first-round pick (13th overall) in the 2021 NFL Draft and is entering the final year of his rookie deal. His fifth-year club option is worth $19.04 million this season. Slater has started all 51 of his games for the Chargers, including 15 last season. He was limited to just three games in 2022 due to a ruptured biceps tendon. He made the Pro Bowl in 2021 and 2024 and was named Second Team All-Pro in 2021. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved
