An individual who shared degrading comments online on social media platforms against the virtual boy group PLAVE has been instructed by the court to pay a hefty amount for the damages that they caused due to the comments.
Court rules in favour of PLAVE,
malicious content
poster to pay hefty fine
In the court ruling last month, according to Allkpop, Judge Jang Yoo Jin of the Uijeongbu District Court fined the person who had shared malicious content against PLAVE with a hefty fine. He stated in court that the fine was viable as "The use of avatars in the age of the metaverse may be considered another means for users of technology to express themselves and communicate with others. In that sense, insulting the avatars may be seen as equivalent to insulting the actual user behind the avatar.
"
The judge ruled in the hearing that every member of the group is going to be paid 100,000 KRW each by the offender as a damages fee.
What happened?
The offender, who has not been named, took to their social media accounts and shared derogatory and malicious content against the members of the virtual boy group as well as the people behind these avatars. The incident occurred in July last year, and since then, the agency of the boy group has filed a lawsuit against the offender.
At the time of the first court hearing, the offender made their statement by saying that the comments were not targeted towards real people and could not be used for prosecution against them. They shared that the comments "were not directed at the real-life individuals behind the virtual characters; therefore, they cannot be considered accounts of offence."
This claim, however, was dismissed and refuted by the judge, who stated in court that "An individual can still be offended even when their real names or any specific names referring to that individual or group are not used.
Furthermore, if others can identify the individual based on context, it must be seen as an account of offence against that specific individual."
The judge then put in his final concluding statement in the court hearing, stating that If the identity of the avatar user is widely known or public information, accounts of offence committed against the avatar must be seen as equivalent to accounts of offence committed against the real-life user. In the case of PLAVE, regardless of the agency's current stance or policies, the real-life identities of the members have become information readily available to the masses.
When considering the fact that 'B' also committed the offenses in question with that information in mind, it must be concluded that 'B' specifically targeted the plaintiffs."

BTS' V and Jungkook likely to visit court for settlement procedure against Sojang in 90M KRW defamation case

BTS member V and Jungkook's defamation case against YouTuber Sojang might take a new turn. According to a July 3 report by K-media outlet Star Today, the latest update of the case suggests that the court expects both parties to come to a settlement. The K-pop stars might have to attend the court discussion in-person this time as it will not be the same as the previous trials. Court hearing for BTS' V and Jungkook's settlement with offender to be held on July 21 V and Jungkook might participate in a court-mediated discussion on July 21 at 9:40 am KST (6:10 am IST) to explore a potential settlement in their defamation lawsuit against Sojang, the operator of the YouTube channel Taldeok Camp. This development comes after the second-level court redirected the case to this format from a full hearing, on June 16. The discussion aims to facilitate a mutually acceptable agreement between the parties. The settlement pathway will allow the offender and the victim to engage in discussions and reach a mutually beneficial outcome with the court's assistance. If a settlement is successfully reached, it will carry the same legal authority as a final court ruling under Article 28 of the Civil Procedure Act. Although news of V and Jungkook appearing in court themselves for the settlement have been making rounds, there is no official confirmation regarding the same. More about V and Jungkook's defamation case In February 2025, Youtuber Sojang was found guilty of spreading false information about V and Jungkook, through her YouTube channel from October 2021 to June 2023. She allegedly posted 23 such defamatory content related to the K-pop stars, and as a result, was ordered by the 12th Civil Division of the Seoul Western District Court to pay 76 million KRW (around 53,000 USD) in damages. From among it, 51 million KRW was to go to BTS' agency BIGHIT MUSIC, 10 million KRW to V and 15 million KRW to Jungkook. However, initially a 90 million KRW lawsuit was filed by the BTS members in January 2025. They won the case but the damages fee amount was changed to 76 million KRW as per the court ruling.

Petition filed to BAN BTS star SUGA from KBS broadcasts over DUI conviction

A formal petition has been submitted to the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS), urging the network to restrict appearances by BTS member SUGA due to a past drunk driving offence. The petition, posted on KBS's viewer message board, calls on the broadcaster's Appearance Regulation Review Committee to evaluate the singer's eligibility for future broadcasts. Titled 'Request to restrict SUGA's appearance in relation to his DUI fine,' the petition references an incident from August 6, 2024, during which SUGA, while serving as a social service agent, was caught operating an electric scooter under the influence. His blood alcohol level reportedly exceeded 0.08% — enough to warrant license revocation under South Korean law. He was later fined 15 million KRW approximately $11,000 via a summary order issued in September 2024. As reported by allkpop, the petitioner argued that drunk driving is a 'serious offense that can directly endanger others,' and expressed concern over the potential message SUGA's presence on television could send to younger audiences. 'As a public figure with considerable influence over young people, SUGA's continued appearances on television could weaken public awareness of the gravity of DUI crimes,' the petition stated. The petitioner also noted that while KBS had not addressed the matter earlier due to the ongoing investigation, the legal process has since concluded, with the fine finalised on September 27, 2024. SUGA was officially discharged from his alternative military service on June 21, 2025. 'Prompt and fair measures must be taken to maintain public trust and uphold the broadcaster's responsibility as a public institution,' the petition concluded, urging swift action from the committee. As of now, KBS has not publicly responded to the petition.
