Wrestler, U23 Asian Wrestling Championships gold medallist Priya Malik: Yeh shuruat hai, mera sapna bahut bada hai

Hindustan Times22-06-2025
All of 20, Priya Malik is well on her way to becoming the next big thing in Indian wrestling. On Friday, the Haryana native clinched the gold medal at the U23 Asian Wrestling Championships in Vung Tau, Vietnam. Priya Malik won all three bouts by technical precision on her way to a gold in the women's 76kg category.
Competing in the women's 76kg category, Priya won all three bouts with technical precision, leaving no room for doubt that she's one to watch.
Following her win, the wrestler is ecstatic, but she knows the work isn't quite done yet. 'I am extremely happy right now, but this win will not stay with me for too long,' she says and elaborates, 'Yeh bas shuruat hai. Mera sapna hai ki pehle Asian Games mein aur fir 2028 mein Olympics mein India ke liye gold lana hai.'
Ask if there was any nervousness when she stepped up to the mat for the final match and Priya dismisses the thought. 'Bahut confidence milta hai jab aap mat pe hote hain aur aapko pata hai ki koi aapke against uss time pe point score nahin kar sakta,' she replies, noting that this comes from a conviction in her own strong mindset.
The rising star from a village in Jind also credits one man for pushing her forward — her dadda (grandfather) Prithvi Singh. Talking about her first coach and biggest cheerleader, Priya reminisces, 'Dadda mere pehle inspiration the. Agar bachpan mein woh na hote, toh main wrestler nahin hoti. He got me interested in the sport and never left my side till his passing in 2020. I miss him on days like these but I know he is watching from above and smiling.'
While she's had a strong support system in her family, the wrestler acknowledges that several other girls with the same dreams and aspirations as her aren't as fortunate. 'Main khush kismat hoon, lekin bahut si ladkiyan apna sapna nahin jee pati,' she muses. 'I would like to tell those girls, agar tumne apne liye sapna dekh liya hai, toh kaun kya bol raha hai kabhi mat suno. Jis din tum apne mukaam ko haasil kar logi, uss din wahi sab tumhare peeche khade honge,' she signs off. For more, follow HT City Delhi Junction

Shubman Gill's Temperament Questioned As Sanjay Manjrekar Namedrops Virat Kohli: "Disappointed..."

India captain Shubman Gill came under heavy scrutiny following the team's loss to England in the third Test at Lord's earlier this month. Gill, who accumulated 430 runs during the 2nd Test in Edgbaston, was accused of crumbling under pressure as India failed to chase down a target of 193. Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar also questioned Gill's temperament, saying that the youngster was rattled after England players attacked him with personal jibes. He also compared Gill's temperament to former India skipper Virat Kohli, adding that the latter would become an even better batter in a similar situation. "When Gill walked out to bat on Day 4, I expected England to give it back to him. After all, he had lost his temper earlier, and that's part of the game. What disappointed me, though, was how it seemed to affect Shubman Gill. When something similar happened with Virat Kohli, he would get even more fired up and become a better batter. But with Gill, the effect wasn't the same. He came out looking tentative," Manjrekar told JioHotstar. "Some of the sledging by English players included personal attacks. This might have been unfamiliar territory for Gill, especially considering that Indian players today often receive a friendly reception from touring sides. But Gill didn't seem up for the challenge. The way he batted reflected that, and I have no doubt there's a connection between the sledging and his uncertainty at the crease," he added. While Manjrekar praised Gill for exceeding expectation as captain so far, he also suggested the 25-year-old to work on his temperament in order to carve out his own identity. "Gill is a young captain, and he has already surpassed expectations, both with the bat and as a leader. The scoreline might be close, but India has won a Test match, and that's credit to how he has gone about it. This eight-day break comes at a perfect time for him. He has good people around him, and his father, more than anyone, would know what kind of personality Shubman really is, whether he's a potential Virat Kohli or Dhoni, or somewhere in between," said Manjrekar. "I'm guessing somewhere in between. He has to find his own path now, a path that enhances both, his leadership and his batting. And, if there is anything coming in the way of either, he's got to quickly let go of it. In the first Test, he was leaning heavily on Rishabh Pant and others. In the second, he started asserting himself, and the results followed. Now, after this little setback in the third Test, we might see the best of Shubman Gill, the captain, in Manchester. Hopefully, we'll also see the best of Shubman Gill, the batter," he concluded.

Visa delay worries wrestlers for U17 World Championship ahead of departure

The Indian cadet wrestling teams risk missing the prestigious U17 World Championship in Athens, beginning on July 28, as the 47-member contingent is scheduled to depart on Saturday but the Greece embassy is yet to respond to their visa appointment request. The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) had sought appointment on July 10 but 12 days have passed and it is yet to hear a positive response from the embassy. When nothing moved even six days after their request, WFI wrote to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on July 16, seeking intervention. The 47-member Indian contingent has 30 wrestlers, who made the national team after coming through selection trials conducted by WFI on July 7 and 8 in Delhi and Lucknow respectively. "The Federation had to seek intervention of the MEA and the Home Ministry after its numerous requests did not receive a positive response from the Greece embassy," WFI President Sanjay Singh told PTI. "The tickets have been booked and the players are ready. The exposure for young athletes is paramount for their growth. They must not miss the World Championship. It's Tuesday today, let's hope we get a response now," he added. "In the past we have got visas from the Greece embassy in a matter of four days but this time there is an inexplicable delay. Recently our wrestler Harshita got a Shengen visa by the Hungary embassy in one day, I don't know why Greece embassy is delaying it this time," said another WFI official. The Indian squad has several Asian Championship gold medallists in the squad, including Rachna Parmar (43kg), Moni (57kg), Ashvini Vaishno (65kg), and Manisha (69kg) and they will be strong medal contenders in Athens. Even the world governing body United World Wrestling (UWW) President Nenad Lalovic has shot a missive to the Hellenic Olympic Committee, requesting urgent intervention in the matter. "Unfortunately, some of the qualified and registered teams including the Iranian and Indian delegations have encountered difficulties and delays in obtaining their Schengen visas," Lalovic wrote on Sunday. "Despite having followed the application procedures correctly, these teams have not yet received their visas. I would therefore be most grateful for your support in facilitating this process with the relevant authorities, to ensure that all participating athletes and officials are able to obtain their visas in time," the letter read. A note on the Greece embassy website reads: "Kindly be informed that due to the current situation the processing time of the visa applications is 15 working days, as per instructions of the Greek Embassy in New Delhi, and may be extended." Explaining the visa procedure further, the website mentions that it may take more than 15 days to process the visa applications. "Applicants submitting their visa application at a Visa Application Centre in India other than the one in New Delhi, need to calculate 5 extra days to their minimum processing time as their visa application will first be dispatched to the GVCW New Delhi VAC for Greece, from where it will be forwarded to the Embassy of Greece - Consular Office in New Delhi the following day.
