Jaipur airport eases cab access
2
Jaipur: Passengers headed to the Jaipur international airport will now be able to board cabs from the arrival gate instead of walking, luggage et al, to the parking bay for cabs as a part of the monsoon protocol, officials said Tuesday.
In a ground visit to the airport by a TOI team, this reporter also saw that cabs have been permitted to drop passengers up to the departure gates while adhering to the eight-minute exit rule.
"This arrangement has caused vehicle congestion to ease up a bit, which was earlier mismanaged due to limited access of cabs," said Ramesh, a rental cab driver. Frequent travellers, who would earlier have to walk some distance to board their cabs, said that the recent development has aided their commutation.
"It's a relief not having to carry my luggage all the way to the parking area 500 metres away," said Niharika, a student returning from Delhi.
Despite this development, drivers of app-based cab services like Ola and Uber are hesitant to cross their designated parking zone due to the fear of being fined, Atma Ram, an Uber driver told TOI. "Since the start of the month, we were told to pick up and drop off passengers at the Ola and Uber parking zone.

Airport authorities would fine us Rs 500 if we go outside the designated area for cabs," he said.
Moreover, wheelchair facilities for elderly, disabled passengers at the entry gates of the airport is still largely absent.
The absence of a wheelchair assistance kiosk near these designated parking spaces causes serious problems for passengers with reduced mobility, and the nearest kiosk is approximately 500 metres away from the parking area. On Tuesday, Geeta, a senior citizen on a wheelchair with impaired mobility, speech, and hearing, was distressed as she was unable to receive help from the airline staff accompanying her. After repeatedly asking the staff to dial her family member and failing, she was assisted by this reporter.
Passengers also reported reluctance to use rental cab service from the airport since they are not pocket-friendly and there is no provision in place to regulate rentals.

No Cabs, No Clarity: Ola-Uber Drivers Extend Mumbai Strike, Airport Issues Travel Advisory
Last Updated: As app-based cab drivers rally for fair wages and stronger protections, Mumbai faces widespread travel chaos with little relief in sight. Mumbai's daily commuters are grappling with major transport delays yet again as Ola and Uber drivers continue their protest for a second consecutive day. The strike, which began on July 15, has gained momentum with thousands of app-based drivers from across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) gathering at Azad Maidan near CSMT. Why Are Drivers Protesting? At the core of the protest is the demand for fare rationalisation in line with RTO-approved tariffs. Drivers say they earn just Rs 8–Rs 9 per kilometre, which they argue is not enough to cover rising fuel prices, vehicle maintenance, and loan repayments. Protesters are also calling for: A ban on bike taxis like Rapido A cap on cab and auto permits to control oversupply Reinstatement of deactivated accounts A proper welfare board for drivers A fair grievance redressal system 'We're being exploited. Ola and Uber charge high commissions and leave us with nothing," said a protesting driver, as per Free Press Journal. The situation has been especially tough for people heading to or from Mumbai Airport. The airport authority issued a public advisory on X, urging passengers to check for transport availability and make backup plans. Many travellers faced delays, missed rides, and last-minute hassles. Furthermore, commuters have shared disturbing accounts of ride disruptions. Rakesh Shah from Mulund said, 'Protesters forced my driver to cancel mid-ride. It was frightening." Others reported being stranded for hours, as striking drivers blocked or threatened working ones. What Lies Ahead? Union leaders claim this was meant to be a one-day dharna, but protests spilled into Wednesday with no clear end in sight. They accuse the government of ignoring the Maharashtra Gig Workers' Act and failing to take firm action on illegal operators. view comments First Published: July 17, 2025, 09:51 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Surge in RRTS rides after one-way scheme on NH58
Meerut: The number of rides on India's first Namo Bharat trains increased from 45,000 to 69,000 per day — a jump of over 53% — after the one-way scheme was implemented on National Highway-58 due to the ongoing kanwar yatra, NCRTC officials said. Puneet Vats, chief public relations officer of NCRTC, told TOI, "Ridership was about 45,000 until June, but surged to nearly 69,000 after road closures for the kanwar yatra. Stations like Meerut South, Ghaziabad, and Anand Vihar see the highest number of commuters." To manage the demand, NCRTC reduced train intervals from 15 to 10 minutes. Meanwhile, NH-58 is now one-way, and the Delhi-Meerut expressway will be closed in two phases starting July 19, with heavy vehicles already banned, to make way for the pilgrims. Since its launch, RRTS has recorded 1.2 crore rides. However, reaching Meerut South station remains difficult due to kanwariya crowds on Delhi Road. Anand Harit, a commuter, said, "Travelling by car is tough with road closures. RRTS is easier, but I still need three auto rides to reach the station." Notably, NH-58 has seen conflicts and accidents involving kanwariyas in the past years. As a precautionary measure, the route diversion dedicates one lane to light vehicles and the other to pilgrims.
