SC to hear plea against stay on 'Udaipur Files' release
The matter was mentioned today before a bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi by Senior Advocate Gaurav Bhatia, seeking urgent listing. The Court agreed to list the case for hearing within a day or two.
On July 10, the Delhi High Court had directed the Central government to exercise its revisional powers under Section 6 of the Cinematograph Act to examine the movie. The order was passed on petitions, including one filed by Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind President Maulana Arshad Madani, seeking a ban on the film for allegedly vilifying Muslims. The movie is based on the murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal Teli in Udaipur and was slated for release on July 11.
The High Court bench of Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Anish Dayal permitted the petitioners to approach the Central government within two days and stayed the release in the meantime. The Court directed that if approached, the Central government shall decide the revision petition within one week after giving the producer an opportunity to be heard.
Earlier, the CBFC had informed the High Court that certain offending portions in the film had been removed. The Court then directed the producer to arrange a screening for Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Madani, and Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma, appearing for CBFC.
Following the screening, Sibal submitted before the High Court that he was appalled by the movie content, describing it as 'cinematic vandalism.'
After a detailed hearing on July 10, the High Court stayed the release of the film while asking the petitioners to seek further relief from the Central government. The producers have now approached the Supreme Court against the stay order.

Body of DU student from Tripura recovered from Yamuna
New Delhi, July 14 (UNI) The body of a 19-year-old Delhi University (DU) student from Tripura, reported missing over a week ago, was recovered from the Yamuna River under the Geeta Colony flyover area, Delhi Police confirmed. Sneha, a Mathematics student at DU's Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, belonged to Sabroom's Bhuratali village in South Tripura district. Her family has resided in Delhi for several years. Police stated that Sneha went missing on July 7 from Paryavaran Complex, and a missing person's complaint was filed the same day. An FIR under Section 140 (3) (kidnapping/abduction) of the BNS was registered on July 9. A suicide note was found in her room on July 8, and police were informed immediately. Citing the note, police revealed Sneha had stated her decision to end her life, asserting no one was to blame. The note, confirmed to be in her handwriting, also expressed feelings like finding life unbearable and a burden. "The note provided by the family indicated her intention to jump from Signature Bridge," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan. Yesterday, Tripura CM Manik Saha expressed his condolences, terming her death "sad and heartbreaking," and instructed Tripura Bhawan, New Delhi, to coordinate with the Delhi administration for further formalities. Bihar advocates panel protests lawyer's murder, demands arrest of culprits
Patna, July 14 (UNI) The Bihar Young Advocates Welfare Committee today demanded that the government immediately arrest the criminals who shot dead an advocate Jitendra Kumar Mehta. In a meeting held here at Patna Civil Court under the chairmanship of committee president Sudhir Kumar Sinha, the lawyers also called for a speedy trial to ensure swift justice and strict punishment for the culprits. Sinha said that the members unanimously demanded that the government pay Rs 50 lakh as compensation to the deceased advocate's family and a government job for an eligible dependent. Additionally, the committee has demanded the implementation of the Advocate Protection and Compensation Act, he informed. Meanwhile, another lawyers' organisation, Khula Manch, held a day-long sit-in protest near Gate No. 1 of the Patna Civil Court, demanding the immediate arrest of the killers and compensation for the victim's family. Notably, advocate Jitendra Kumar Mehta of Patna Civil Court was shot dead by criminals in the Sultan Ganj police station area of Patna yesterday. UNI RS RN

Centre questions maintainability of PFI's plea against ban in Delhi HC
New Delhi [India], July 14 (ANI): The Central government on Monday objected to the legal validity of a petition on maintainability ground filed by the Popular Front of India (PFI) in the Delhi High Court, challenging the confirmation of a five-year ban imposed on the organization under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). During the hearing, the Additional Solicitor General (ASG) S V Raju, representing the Centre, argued that the petition was not maintainable under Articles 226 or 227 of the Constitution. He submitted that the tribunal upholding the ban was led by a sitting High Court judge, and therefore, any challenge to its order should be made under Article 136 in the Supreme Court, not in the High Court. The ASG also stated that the authority of a High Court judge presiding over a tribunal does not fall under the purview of subordinate courts. PFI's counsel countered by referencing a previous ruling by a division bench of the High Court, which, according to them, allows the petition to be heard. However, the bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela decided to re-list the matter for further arguments, listing the next hearing on August 7. The court has not yet issued a formal notice on the petition. PFI's petition contests the tribunal's order from March 2024, which affirmed the Centre's September 2022 decision to ban the organisation and its affiliates for allegedly engaging in terrorist activities and promoting communal hatred. The Ministry of Home Affairs declared PFI and its linked groups--including the Campus Front of India, Rehab India Foundation, and National Women's Front--as 'unlawful associations' under UAPA. The government cited extensive evidence, including video materials and testimony from over 100 witnesses, to justify the ban. It claimed connections between PFI and other proscribed groups such as ISIS, SIMI, and Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), along with involvement in financing terrorism, executing targeted killings, and destabilising public order.
