How Indore Became India's Cleanest City For 8th Time In A Row
The cities were evaluated based on 10 parameters and 54 indicators. The Centre said that the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 adopted a smart and structured approach to assess urban cleanliness.
Here are the parameters on how they ranked.
Waste Management: Indore disposes of 100 per cent of household waste, which is first segregated and then fully processed. In the city, wet and dry waste are collected separately, helping with the production of compost.
Public Toilets: The city has a sufficient number of toilets, alleviating the problem of open defecation. Proper cleanliness is maintained in these toilets without any negligence.
Use of Technology in Waste Management: Indore uses advanced technologies such as a waste tracking system and CCTV to manage waste.
Active Citizen Participation: Indore has ensured active participation of its citizens in the cleanliness campaign. The city has educated people about the importance of cleanliness and hygiene, turning it into a mass movement.
Open Defecation Free City: Every household in the city has access to a toilet, and open defecation is completely eliminated. The city has achieved the status of Open Defecation Free.
Door-to-Door Waste Collection: Waste collection from every household prevents the garbage from piling up on the streets.
Garbage Segregation + 3R Model: In Indore, the waste is segregated into different categories, such as rejected waste, which is called Attala, wet waste and dry waste. Special teams have been appointed to handle recycling, which is closely monitored by the Municipal Corporation.
Use of Dustbins: The city has installed dustbins every 50 meters across the city, and these bins are emptied daily.
Cleaning of Roads at Night: The roads are washed and cleaned every night. Whether it's Diwali, Holi, Rangpanchami, or Ganesh Chaturthi, the city is cleaned immediately after the celebrations. Indore also holds a record for the entire city being cleaned within five hours of Rangpanchami festivities.
City Beautification: The artists depict the Indian culture on walls and enhance the city's image.
This year, Noida has emerged as the cleanest city in the 3-10 lakh population category, New Delhi in the 50,000 to 3 lakh population category, Vita (Maharashtra) in the 20,000 to 50,000 population category, and Panchgani in the less than 20,000 population category.

MCD jumps 59 places in Swachh Survekshan 2024-25
New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has secured the 31st position in 'Medium Cities' category in the ninth edition of the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2024-25. The awards, announced on Thursday, were given based on the world's largest urban sanitation survey, Swachh Survekshan, conducted under the Swachh Bharat Mission - Urban. This year's edition saw participation from a record number of 4,589 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), a signifi-cant increase of 73 cities from the time when the survey was first launched in 2016. Last year, the MCD was ranked 90th. The survey also introduced, for the first time, a classification of cities into five population categories - Very Small Cities (less than 20,000), Small Cities (20,000-50,000), Medium Cities (50,000-3 lakh), Big Cities (3-10 lakh) and Million-Plus Cities (more than 10 lakh). Guided by the theme 'Reduce, Recycle, and Reuse,' the 2024-25 edition emphasised circularity in waste management and sustainable sanitation practices. Among the cleanest cities in the country, Indore, Surat, Navi Mumbai and Vijayawada topped the 'Super Swachh League' in the Million-Plus Cities category. The 2024-25 survey aimed to assess progress under the Swachh Bharat Mission - Urban 2.0 and rank cities on various cleanliness and sanitation parameters, including solid waste management, citizen feed-back, and capacity building. According to the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry, 14 crore people participated in the survey through face-to-face interactions, the Swachhata App, MyGov and various social media platforms across more than 4,500 cities.

Swachh Survekshan 2024-25: Pimpri-Chinchwad named cleanest city in Maharashtra
Pimpri-Chinchwad is declared cleanest city in Maharashtra and seventh in India among million-plus cities in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25. The twin city retained two certifications – 7-Star Garbage Free City and Water Plus status – given by the ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA). It was ranked third in state and 13th nationally in the survey carried last year. The city once again earned the Water Plus certification, reflecting its 100% compliance with wastewater management and other efforts. Union minister Manohar Lal and Minister of State (MoS), ministry of housing and urban affairs, Tokhan Sahu attended the event. This year's survey, the ninth edition of Swachh Survekshan, covered more than 4,500 cities and recorded participation from over 14 crore citizens. Pimpri-Chinchwad scored 11,782 points and outperformed Pune, ranked eighth with 11,653 points, and Thane, which stood at 15th place with 10,836 points. The top position in the category in the country was held by Ahmedabad, followed by Bhopal and Lucknow. Civic officials said retention of 7-Star Garbage Free City status was result of implementation of scientific solid waste processing at the source and decentralised waste treatment across all wards. Door-to-door segregated collection, composting units, recycling plants, and biogas facilities contributed to the milestone. The city once again earned the Water Plus certification, reflecting its 100% compliance with wastewater management and other efforts. Shekhar Singh, Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal commissioner, said, 'The recognition is proof to Pimpri-Chinchwad's sustained and inclusive efforts.' Vijaykumar Khorate, additional PCMC commissioner, said, 'Our next focus will be on zero waste policies, sustainable sanitation, water reuse, and building an environmentally responsible urban ecosystem.' Sachin Pawar, deputy commissioner (health), said, 'We are determined to work harder and aim to bring Pimpri-Chinchwad to the top national position in the next survey.'

It is conducted under the ambit of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban). 2. The 9th edition of Swachh Survekshan (SS) awards, which was announced by the President, has a revamped format. With Indore winning the tag of cleanest city for seven years in a row, Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said last year that the next round of the Swachhata rankings will have a separate category for cities that have been ranked number one in the past, leaving the general competition open for new winners. 3. To address it, in this 9th edition of SS, a special category – Super Swachh League has been introduced, creating a separate league of cities excelling in cleanliness. This category recognises the cities that had been in the top three of their categories in the previous three years. 4. This new category, Super Swachh League Cities, included the previous winners Indore, Surat, and Navi Mumbai. Last year, Indore and Surat were jointly recognised as the cleanest cities, with Indore maintaining its top position for the seventh consecutive time. 5. Last year, Swachh Bharat Mission completed its 10 years on 2nd October. This was one of the first programmes announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he took office in 2014. 2. Having achieved the ODF status, the government launched the phase II of the Swachh Bharat Mission – Grameen, a Centrally Sponsored Scheme, w.e.f. 2020-21.
