A date with nostalgia: Bikers ride through Mysuru outskirts to mark ‘Jawa Day'

The Hindu13-07-2025
Around 80 proud owners of Jawa and Yezdi bikes which ruled the roads in a bygone era went on a ride from Mysuru to Srirangapatna to mark 'Jawa Day', on Sunday.
The organisers claimed it was the 23rd edition of the 'Jawa Day', and the participants were those who own Jawa or Yezdi motorcycles and have not changed brands despite multiple options in the present times.
These bikes were manufactured in Mysuru, before the company – Ideal Jawa - shut down and stopped manufacturing in 1996.
However, the enthusiasm and passion for the bike still remains strong as is evident from the number of participants of this event every year. The 'Jawa Day' is conducted on the second Sunday of every July.
The ride commenced from Koorgalli industrial area, passed through Belagola, and reached Srirangapatna before culminating at the starting point. The organisers said that they were denied permission to hold the rally in Mysuru, and hence were forced to change their route and take a ride through the outskirts of the city.
Organisers expressed hope that future editions would return to city roads, allowing more people to witness the legacy of these legendary bikes.

BSA Bantam 350 unveiled in UK, is based on Jawa 42 FJ

BSA has brought back a legendary name from the past—this time with a blend of nostalgic styling and modern mechanicals. Unveiled recently in the UK, the all-new BSA Bantam 350 marks a fresh chapter for the iconic Bantam moniker, which originally dates back to the late 1940s. The new iteration retains the spirit of the original while being reimagined for today's roads and riders. Visually, the Bantam 350 embraces a retro aesthetic with upright proportions, a teardrop-shaped fuel tank, and generous use of chrome. The wire-spoke wheels and the round headlamp further echo its vintage lineage, giving it a simple yet timeless appearance. Though it stays true to its roots in terms of design, what lies beneath is thoroughly contemporary. BSA Bantam 350 in Victor Yellow colour scheme. Interestingly, the new Bantam is underpinned by the same platform as the Jawa 42 Bobber, including its chassis and engine. It shares the 334 cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that delivers around 22.5 hp and 28 Nm of torque. While this engine has proven itself in other motorcycles, it's been tuned here to complement the laid-back, classic roadster personality of the Bantam. It's paired with a 6-speed gearbox and is Euro 5 compliant, making it ready for a wider international rollout. You get a single-pod instrument cluster that offers digital and analog readouts, and the bike comes equipped with disc brakes at both ends along with dual-channel ABS. The Bantam will sit just below the BSA Gold Star in the brand's lineup, making it a more accessible option for those who want a slice of classic motorcycling heritage without stepping into the larger displacement segment. The Bantam is priced from £3,499 RRP, which makes it more affordable than the Gold Star, making it a strong contender in the mid-capacity retro bike space. As of now, there's no confirmation on an India launch, but given BSA's links with Classic Legends—the same group behind Jawa and Yezdi—there's certainly potential for the Bantam 350 to arrive on Indian roads in the future. 6,000 Riders Keep the Classic Spirit Alive on International Jawa-Yezdi Day

Riders from all corners of India came together to mark the second Sunday of July, which has come to mean something special in the world of classic motorcycles: International Jawa-Yezdi Day. From early morning rumble-outs in the hills of Manipur to sunset rides through the streets of Kochi and beaches of Konkan, fans of classic motorcycle brands Jawa and Yezdi showed up in style, riding retro, riding proud. This fan-designated day has grown into a phenomenon, and Jawa Yezdi Motorcycles is proud to celebrate the cultural pulse powered by the two iconic brands' rider communities and dealerships. Over 6,000 riders from 12 states, 20 cities, and 18 riding communities, 120 dealerships of Jawa Yezdi Motorcycles participated this year. From the Capital Jawa Yezdi Club Delhi, Haryana Jawa Yezdi Club, and Rajasthan Jawa Yezdi Club in the north to the southern riding communities of Kanyakumari Jawa Yezdi Club, BJYMC Bengaluru, Reborn Riders Chennai, and Smoking Barrels Trivandrum, the day saw a passionate turnout. Riders from the northeast's Jawa Yezdi Motorcycle Club Manipur, west India's YJOC Western Maharashtra and Jawa Yezdi Club Pune, and riding communities in Mangalore, Nagercoil, Palakkad, Varanasi, Chandigarh, and Chhattisgarh brought their signature character to the rides. The day became a nationwide celebration of machines that carry stories in their tanks and memories in their mirrors. Judging by this year's turnout, Jawa and Yezdi motorcycles continue to spark passion across generations, earning riders' love for carrying the lineage of steel, simplicity, and an honest classic soul forward. Riders who have clocked over thousands of kilometres on their 90s classic cruisers rode shoulder-to-shoulder with Gen Z bikers astride modern Jawas and Yezdis. New-age riders with GoPros and playlists; old-schoolers with toolkits and tales. All united by a common love for Jawa Yezdi motorcycling. Sharad Agarwal, Chief Business Officer, Classic Legends, said, 'This growing wave of interest from younger riders shows how classic motorcycling is not about age or nostalgia but about character. Classic and neo-classic machines speak to something deeper. They feel and ride differently. And they are increasingly being seen by present generations as not just throwbacks, but as a statement.' Jawa and Yezdi were built for riders who go their own way, and if over 6,000 of them choose to mark a day for their machines, Classic Legends is honoured to tip its helmet to them on this International Jawa-Yezdi Day. Every year, this fan-driven celebration only grows louder. And every year, it reminds us: Classic does not fade. It rides on.
