UK, Pakistan launch trade dialogue to deepen economic ties
The announcement was made after a ministerial meeting held on Monday in London, co-chaired by UK Minister for Trade Policy and Economic Security Douglas Alexander and Pakistan's Federal Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan.
The newly formed UK-Pakistan Business Advisory Council will include senior business leaders and government officials from both countries. It will offer strategic advice on policy reforms, serve as a confidential forum for dialogue, and promote commercial opportunities by resolving market access issues and sharing best practices.
The ministers also agreed to hold annual meetings to maintain momentum and support businesses and investors in both countries.
UK Trade Minister Douglas Alexander said the Dialogue "marks the next step in our long-standing relationship with Pakistan" and aims to "unlock new opportunities" in sectors such as healthcare and digital technology.
"These are areas central to the UK's Industrial Strategy, where we can drive growth, foster innovation, and create jobs," he said.
Pakistan's Commerce Minister Jam Kamal called the UK one of Pakistan's most important economic partners. "This Dialogue lays the foundation for a more structured and forward-looking trade relationship," he noted.
To support Pakistan's efforts to attract foreign investment, the UK also pledged up to £200,000 for technical assistance and matchmaking efforts between Pakistani investors and UK opportunities.

UK launches digital eVisas for Pakistani students, workers
Listen to article The United Kingdom has officially introduced digital eVisas for Pakistani students and workers, marking a significant step towards a modernised and streamlined immigration process. Starting from July 15, 2025, most primary applicants applying for UK study or work-related visas will no longer require a physical sticker visa in their passports. Instead, they will be issued a digital record of their immigration status, known as an eVisa. An eVisa is an online confirmation of an individual's permission to enter, stay, or work in the UK. It also outlines any conditions attached to their immigration status. This digital status can be accessed and managed through an online UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account. The change does not affect an individual's immigration status or the conditions of their stay but represents a shift in how this information is stored and shared. According to the British High Commission in Islamabad, the eVisa system aims to make the visa process more secure, efficient, and user-friendly. British High Commissioner Jane Marriott CMG OBE emphasised the convenience of the new system, stating that the transition to eVisas would simplify the process for Pakistani students and professionals. 'These changes to the UK visa system will make it much simpler for students and workers to prove their identity and visa status. It also means applicants can hold onto their passports, saving them time,' she said. The rollout applies to a wide range of visa categories. These include students—both for long-term and short-term study up to 11 months—along with individuals applying under the Global Business Mobility routes such as Senior or Specialist Workers, Graduate Trainees, and Secondment Workers. Other eligible categories include Global Talent, International Sportspersons, Skilled Workers (including those in the Health and Care sector), various Temporary Work routes, and applicants under the Youth Mobility Scheme. eVisa holders will be able to link their travel documents, such as passports, to their UKVI accounts to enable smoother international travel. Through the 'view and prove' service, individuals can securely share their immigration status with employers, landlords, or other authorised entities, particularly in England. However, not all visa applicants will receive an eVisa at this stage. Those applying as dependants or under visa categories not related to work or study—such as general visitor visas—will still be issued a physical sticker visa. Similarly, individuals who already possess valid physical visa stickers do not need to take any action, as their existing documents remain valid. This is part of a phased approach by the UK Home Office to fully digitise its immigration system. The goal is to eventually replace all physical immigration documents with secure, accessible digital records. The transition to eVisas aligns with global trends in immigration management and reflects the UK's commitment to using technology to improve the customer experience for visa applicants worldwide.

Rupee records slight gain against US dollar
Rupee's Performance Against US Dollar Since 04 March 2025 Pakistani rupee registered slight gain against the US dollar, appreciating 0.02% in the inter-bank market on Tuesday. At close, the currency settled at 284.67, a gain of Re0.05. On Monday, the currency settled at 284.72. Globally, the US dollar hovered near a three-week high versus major peers on Tuesday as traders awaited the release of US inflation data later in the day that could provide clues on the path for monetary policy. The US currency was also buoyed by elevated Treasury yields, with investors weighing a potential exit of Jerome Powell from the Federal Reserve as President Donald Trump continued his criticism of the central bank chairman. Currencies showed little reaction to data showing China's economy grew 5.2% last quarter, slightly topping analysts' forecasts. Bitcoin drifted further from Monday's all-time peak of $123,153.22 following a seven-day, 14% surge as investors bet on long-sought legislative policy wins for the cryptocurrency industry this week. It was changed hands at around $118,215 as of 0240 GMT. The US dollar was little changed at 147.68 yen, after earlier rising to the highest since June 23 at 147.89 yen. The dollar index, which tracks the currency against the yen and five other major rivals, stood at 98.050, not far below the overnight peak of 98.136, the highest since June 25. Oil prices, a key indicator of currency parity, fell on Tuesday after US President Donald Trump's lengthy 50-day deadline for Russia to end the Ukraine war and avoid sanctions eased immediate supply concerns. Brent crude futures fell 29 cents, or 0.4%, to $68.92 a barrel by 0342 GMT, while US West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell 35 cents, or 0.5%, to $66.63. Both contracts settled more than $1 lower in the previous session.
