Russian, Chinese navies carry out artillery, anti-sub drills in Sea of Japan
MOSCOW — The Russian and Chinese navies are carrying out artillery and anti-submarine drills in the Sea of Japan as part of scheduled joint exercises, the Russian Pacific Fleet was quoted as saying on Sunday.
The drills are taking place two days after U.S. President Donald Trump said he had ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in "the appropriate regions" in response to remarks by former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev. However, they were scheduled well before Trump's action.
Interfax news agency quoted the Pacific Fleet as saying Russian and Chinese vessels were moving in a joint detachment including a large Russian anti-submarine ship and two Chinese destroyers.
It said diesel-electric submarines from the two countries were also involved, as well as a Chinese submarine rescue ship. The maneuvers are part of exercises titled "Maritime Interaction-2025" which are scheduled to end on Tuesday.
Interfax said Russian and Chinese sailors would conduct artillery firing, practice anti-submarine and air defense missions, and improve joint search and rescue operations at sea.
Russia and China, which signed a "no-limits" strategic partnership shortly before Russia went to war in Ukraine in 2022, conduct regular military exercises to rehearse coordination between their armed forces and send a deterrent signal to adversaries.
Trump said his submarine order on Friday was made in response to what he called "highly provocative" remarks by Russia's Medvedev about the risk of war between the nuclear-armed adversaries.
Russia and the United States have by far the biggest nuclear arsenals in the world. It is extremely rare for either country to discuss the deployment and location of its nuclear submarines.
Trump's comments came at a time of mounting tension with Moscow as he grows frustrated at the lack of progress towards ending the Ukraine war. — Reuters

The task force, made up of members from Trump's cabinet and government agencies, will coordinate federal, state and local government work on transportation, the official said. It also will "streamline visa processing and credentialing for foreign athletes, coaches, officials, and media," the official said in an email. The United States will host the Olympics in Los Angeles in three years. Trump, a Republican who lost the 2020 election to Democrat Joe Biden, has expressed pleasure that his second term will coincide with the Olympics and the World Cup. "During his first term, President Trump was instrumental in securing America's bid to host the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The president considers it a great honor to oversee this global sporting spectacle in his second term," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement on Monday. Last month organizers of the Los Angeles games released the first look at the Olympic competition schedule. The city had also hosted the Olympics in 1932 and 1984. NSC condemns 'irresponsible' China rocket launch that caused Palawan scare

PCG The National Security Council (NSC) on Tuesday denounced the launch of China's Long March 12 rocket that was seen over Puerto Princesa City in Palawan on Monday. 'We condemn in no uncertain terms the irresponsible testing done by the Peoples Republic of China of its Long March 12 rocket which alarmed the public and placed the people of Palawan at risk,' NSC Secretary Eduardo Año said in a statement. 'While no immediate damage or injury has been reported so far, falling debris from the launch poses a clear danger and risk to land areas and to ships, aircraft, fishing boats, and other vessels that will pass through the drop zone,' he added. 'There is also a possibility for the debris to float around the area and wash toward nearby coasts,' Año further said. According to a report on "Saksi," residents said the ground shook because of the blasts. The Philippine Space Agency and the Philippine Coast Guard confirmed that the smoke trail and loud sound reported in Palawan were associated with China's rocket launch. The public was advised to remain vigilant and report any sightings of potential debris. Año also advised the public against retrieving or coming in close contact with debris materials that may contain toxic fuel residues. 'Surface and aerial assets have been deployed early today to search for debris associated with the loud explosions caused by the Chinese rocket launch from Hainan Island,' Año said. More than 12K Chinese vessels entered PH EEZ in July —AFP
The Armed Forces of the Philippines said Tuesday that more than 12,000 Chinese vessels entered the country's exclusive economic zone in July. In a Super Radyo dzBB interview, AFP spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad shared that the vessels were successfully chased away by the Philippine Coast Guard but have been returning. 'For the month of July 2025, may more than 12,000 na-monitor na iba't ibang klaseng barko within our archipelago na dumaan sa atin… Ito naman, napuntahan naman ng Coast Guard.
