Atletico beats York United 4-3 to advance to Canadian Championship semifinals

TORONTO – Samuel Salter and Aboubacar Sissoko scored late in the second half to give the visiting Atletico side a 4-3 victory over York United on Tuesday, winning the two-game aggregate score 6-4 in Canadian Championship quarterfinal action at York Lions Stadium.
With the victory, the Ottawa-based squad advances to the semifinals, where they'll face the winner of a quarterfinal showdown between CF Montreal (MLS) and Forge FC of Hamilton (CPL). Game 2 of that series is Wednesday night at Saputo Stadium in Montreal.
Forge beat Montreal 1-0 in the series opener on May 20.
Julian Altobelli gave York a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute on Tuesday, but David Rodriguez tied the match seven minutes later.
Salter scored his first goal of the game at the 22-minute mark to give Aletico a 2-1 lead. Four minutes later Elijah Adekugbe was shown a red card, forcing York to play the remainder of the match with 10 men.
Despite being a man down, Altobelli tied the game 2-2 with his second goal in the 37th minute. Massimo Ferrin then gave the hosts a 3-2 lead with a goal in the 53rd minute.
But Salter, in the 84th minute, and Sissoko two minutes into injury time, lifted Atletico to the 4-3 victory.
Atletico outshot York United 14-11 (8-7 on target), had possession 69 per cent of the time, had 11 fouls compared to York's 10, and had more corners (7-1).
Atletico won the first leg 2-1 on June 11.
Later tonight, Vancouver FC visits Cavalry FC in Calgary. The teams played to a 1-1 draw in their quarterfinal series opener on May 21 in Langley, B.C.

Hope Volleyball Summerfest serves up fun and support for charity at Mooney's Bay

The sweltering heat in the nation's capital wasn't enough to keep thousands of volleyball enthusiasts indoors. A sea of players filled the courts at Mooney's Bay on Saturday for the annual Hope Volleyball Summerfest. There are more than 600 teams and 6,000 players playing on the courts this year. Hope Volleyball Summerfest is one of the largest one-day beach volleyball events in the world and it's something players look forward to every year. One of those is Jaime Sharma, playing with her work colleagues. 'Support a great cause. Be here as a team,' she said of why she joined. In their second year attending the event, she says it's fun with them no matter what. 'I think we're losing right now, but the vibe is strong,' she said. 'We keep trying. We're staying positive. We're reframing our losses.' While it's all fun and games for the players, it's also important for the charities who rely on the event. Laura Andrews, executive director Hope Volleyball Summerfest, says more than $100,000 will be raised this year. She says more than $4.75 million has been raised since it began 43 years ago for local charities. 'The people that keep coming back here year after year – I can't thank them enough,' she said. 'It's amazing,' she says of the numbers raised. 'Every year, it's absolutely amazing.' The charities being supported this year include Upstream Ottawa, the Ottawa Humane Society, the Centre for Treatment of Sexual Abuse and Childhood Trauma, The Door Youth Centre and Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa (YSB). Andrews says that every charity has a project they apply for. Malik Ayass, executive director of the Door Youth Centre located on Somerset Street West, says the funding is extremely important. 'Without the support of the community and the volunteers and a third-party funder like volleyball, it's impossible for us to manage and keep our doors open without such support,' he said. 'It means a lot to us and we're very grateful for everybody.' Patti Murphy with the Youth Services Bureau Foundation says the money will go towards their life skills programming for youth who live in their shelters, which includes teaching youth how to cook and budget. 'We know that funds coming in are from individuals or from companies, small and large,' said Murphy. 'Having that care come back to us in a really fun environment like today in the hot sun and the music going, It's really beautiful. It feels like a big family picnic, honestly.' The final fundraising total won't be clear for a few days as organizers work to count all the donations but Andrews says people can continue to donate online.

Atlético Ottawa in 'Superman' form heading into big weekend clash

Atlético Ottawa is currently the team to beat in Canadian soccer, sitting atop the nation's premier league (CPL) table with only one loss in 14 games. The Ottawa side is also riding a seven-game unbeaten streak across all competitions. Atlético's most recent win came in thrilling fashion on Tuesday when Samuel Salter, the club's leading striker, salvaged an underwhelming team performance with a breathtaking goal in the dying minutes of the match. His bullet-like volley fired York United out of the Canadian Championship and sealed what will be Atlético's first appearance in the domestic cup semi-finals when they take on Vancouver FC in August. Goalkeeping coach Romuald Peiser, who previously played for the Ottawea Fury before that club folded, describes this week's victory as a "milestone." A Superman-themed match against rivals The club's true test of character and craftsmanship is set for Saturday at 3 p.m. in a Justice League-like showdown comparable to Superman vs. Batman when Atlético takes on rivals Forge FC of Hamilton. The Superman-themed match at TD Place will see Atlético unveil special edition jerseys inspired by the DC character during warm-up. A limited but unspecified number will be sold to the public, according to a news release. Meanwhile, a four-time league champion is nipping at Atlético's heels: Forge is undefeated this season but trails Atlético by a single point. The Hamilton side is also coming off a big win in the Canadian Championship quarterfinal, defeating CF Montreal earlier this week. Unlike Forge and Atlético, Montreal plays in Major League Soccer (MLS) competition. That league holds a talent pool of professionals with playing experience in the world's top leagues, including legendary Argentine Lionel Messi who now wears the pink and black kit for Inter Miami. Peiser said Saturday's match is an opportunity for the young Ottawa team to grow. The average age of Atlético's roster is 25 years and 102 days, according to the available ages listed on the team's website. That includes 40-year-old Alberto Zapater, without whom the average age drops to 24 years and 241 days. Peiser says the best way to develop those young player is through playing time and technical development. "We want to develop young Canadian players. How do you do that? It's with the ball," Peiser said. New year, new dawn, new playing style for Atlético Past matches between the Ontario teams have led to a growing rivalry. Forge previously defeated Atlético 2-0 in front of 15,000 people at TD Place to lift the North Star Shield in 2023. Forge has bested Atlético more than a dozen times since the Ottawa team's inauguration, far more than the handful of wins the Ottawa side has enjoyed over its provincial rivals. Atlético's playing style has changed this season under new management. A team previously focused on maintaining a compact, defensive shape now demands possession of the ball in an attack-focused model. "We want the ball, but we want the ball with purpose," Peiser said. "[The players] want to win, they want to get better. They enjoy the system, they enjoy the game model. It's very demanding, but they enjoy it so much." Peiser added that it's a team goal to transmit that enjoyment to the fans and give them a "show" "Anyone who came into TD [Place] this year had a lot of fun at the game," Peiser said. "We want a lot of people in the stands having fun with us, [to] really create that union."

Without goalkeeper and captain, Orlando City face woeful Montreal

(Photo credit: Jim Dedmon-Imagn Images) Orlando City will be without their starting goalkeeper and their captain when they host a woeful CF Montreal side on Saturday. Pedro Gallese and defender Robin Jansson will sit out the match due to an accumulation of yellow cards after each was booked in a 2-2 draw against Charlotte FC last week. Their absences open opportunities for younger players to step in for Orlando (9-5-7, 34 points). 'The importance of the roster is that they need to show up now in these moments where yellow-card issues come or where there's suspension or injuries,' coach Oscar Pareja said. 'The guys that are waiting for their opportunities, it's time to come and show that that's the reason why they are here.' Javier Otero will fill in for Gallese in goal, making his second MLS start of the season. The 22-year-old started for the Lions in a 4-1 win against D.C. United in March. The Lions will have Alex Freeman back after the rookie defender competed for the United States in the Gold Cup. 'It's great for the club, for the academy, for our process, for the community,' Pareja said. 'We are happy for him and happy to have him back.' Orlando rallied from a 2-0 deficit to earn a point against Charlotte and is 2-1-1 in its past four matches. Although it's lost just five MLS matches all season, three of those have come in their past six. On the other side, a miserable season for CF Montreal (3-13-5, 14 points) continues to drag on. After winning two of its previous three matches, the Canadian side lost 4-1 to Inter Miami last week. Prince Owusu's team-leading eighth goal of the season opened the scoring before the visitors rallied. On Wednesday, Montreal was eliminated from the Canadian Championship with a 2-2 draw against the Canadian Premier League's Hamilton Forge, who had earned a 1-0 win in the first match back in May. Offense has been a season-long struggle for CF Montreal, who have scored 18 goals in 21 matches, third-fewest in MLS. They've been shut out eight times and have scored more than one goal only four times. Four of the matches in which they've been blanked came under former head coach Laurent Courtois, who was fired following a 0-4-1 start. 'The goal from now through the end of the season -- for me, for the staff, for the players -- is to show that we all want to be here,' interim coach Marco Donadel said. 'Because we love this team, and without that, you can't build. Of course, it's easy to say that. We have to prove it by working.' Montreal is last in the Eastern Conference and just two points out of last place in the league overall.
