Yahoo22-04-2025
Three pubs across North Yorkshire have been nominated in the National Pub and Bar Awards for 2025.
In total, 256 pubs and bars across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are among those shortlisted for a prestigious County Winner title.
The annual event, which returns later this summer, highlights an eclectic range of venues across the whole of the UK by naming 94 sites as the best in their respective counties.
The awards look at a number of elements that affect the customer journey, including marketing, digital presence, design, service, style of offer and investment.
In North Yorkshire alone, The Black Swan in Helmsley, The Black Swan in Ripon and The Plough in Wombleton have been revealed as the pubs battling to be crowned best in the county.
The Plough, located in the village of Wombleton, has been praised by customers on Tripadvisor for its 'fabulous' atmosphere.
Someone added: 'Very welcoming and beautiful and relaxed bar and restaurant.
"We ordered the Sunday roasts. The roast pork was outstanding, and the recommended wine for pairing was perfect with it.
"Can't wait to go back! Thank you.'
Meanwhile, The Black Swan situated in Ripon has been hailed for being a 'proper' pub by visitors.
This person wrote on Tripadvisor: 'Drinks are good and really cheap, dog friendly, which is a must for me and to there is always a good atmosphere.
'Sports fans are really well catered for with big TVS showing football, racing rugby.... I bet they'd even find the tiddlywinks World Cup if you asked nicely.
'Staff are spot on, really friendly, and the recent refit has transformed the place.'
Tristan O'Hana, editor of Pub & Bar magazine, which runs the National Pub and Bar Awards, said: 'The aim of the National Pub & Bar Awards is simple.
'We want to showcase how brilliant these businesses are and how valuable pubs and bars are to the fabric of society across the whole of the UK.
Have you been to any of these shortlisted pubs? (Image: Tripadvisor) 'It has never been harder in hospitality. Whether it's a countryside pub with rooms or a city centre bar showing live sport, these operations deserve widespread recognition and more customers – hopefully the National Pub & Bar Awards can help with both.'

The awards night will also crown the Pub Group of the Year, Bar Group of the Year, The Tyrrells Tyrrellbly Good Taste Award and ultimately, the overall National Pub & Bar of the Year.
On top of that, the 2025 event will launch the Top 10 Pubs & Bars in the UK list, which has been voted for by hundreds of operators from across the country.

Two old Florida restaurants in Naples, Fort Myers area make statewide best of list

Hit the road in Florida and you're bound to run into salty oyster bars, historic waterfront wonders, quirky roadside diners and a fabulous fish camp or two. Welcome to the Sunshine State, where tastes of old Florida can be found here, there, and everywhere. The USA TODAY Network Florida Dining & Entertainment team recently compiled a list of charmingly historic, road-trip worthy restaurants you'll want to jump in your car, boat or golf cart to find. Of the 16 old Florida finds from Perdido Key to Mayport to West Palm, these two were in our little nook of Southwest Florida: The Snook Inn, Marco Island There are waterfront restaurants in Florida, and then there are those that are hurricane-tested. Make that hurricanes. The Snook Inn endured Hurricanes Wilma (2005), Irma (2017) and Ian (2022), not to mention others that have passed nearby. Yet this cool spot that's more than 30 years old still stands. And customers continue to be lured to the island south of Naples by enchanting Gulf breezes and stunning sunsets. They can sip a special drink like the Snook Inn Loaded Bloody Mary and order up a variety of seafood choices, from oysters and grouper to fried calamari to clams, red snapper, shrimp and much more. Find it at 1215 Bald Eagle Drive, Marco Island; 239-394-3313; Cabbage Key Bar and Restaurant, off of Pine Island This boat-access-only gem of an island restaurant and bar is awash in Old Florida history and charm. Dating back to 1944, food and drinks were served in what was then an exclusive island resort in Pine Island Sound. Fast forward to the 1970s and the original home of the island's owners was converted into an open-air restaurant, while their library became the bar. Today, the latter is known as the Dollar Bill Bar with more than 65,000 customer-signed bills blanketing the walls and ceilings. Famous visitors range from Ernest Hemingway to Julia Roberts. Besides fresh seafood, this island paradise serves a char-grilled cheeseburger that Jimmy Buffett, who was a frequent guest, may or may not have sung about. And before you get back on the boat, finish your visit to this slice of old Florida with a homemade slice of frozen(!!!) Key lime pie. Accessible only by boat, Cabbage Key is located at Channel Marker 60 in Pine Island Sound, 4.5 miles west of Pineland; 239-283-2278; Still hungry for more? Hit the road for these old Florida finds. Historic Lake District inn being redeveloped into £3m boutique hotel

A HISTORIC Lake District pub - the highest in Cumbria - in being converted into a boutique hotel. The Kirkstone Pass Inn, which was bought by development company Supreme Escapes in 2021, is currently being refurbished to open as a boutique hotel with pub attached. Supreme Escapes are a company who say they 'specialise in rural and countryside areas, taking semi-derelict buildings and finding new ways of giving them a new lease of life'. They have previously developed a former Church in Cockermouth into a holiday home. Company co-founder Jerry Huppert estimates that Supreme Escapes have so far spent around £3million and are hoping to have a final spend of around £3.25 million. He said: 'We have given the building a new lease of life now for hopefully another 150 years. 'It's an honour to be given such an opportunity and I recommend more developers and investors go down the route of bringing back heritage and dilapidated building in the UK rather than just always jumping on the new builds.' The developer hopes that the Kirkstone Pass Inn will be opened as a boutique hotel by the end of July with the pub element set to follow shortly after. Following news of the redevelopment coming out on social media, the company faced a backlash to the plans with some people fearing the venue would be used for stag and hen parties as well as raising concerns about the loss of character of the building. However Mr Huppert said that rumours of the pub being turned into a venue for stag and hen parties were 'unsubstantiated' and that those who are speaking out now against the plans should have supported the pub before it was allowed to have become semi-derelict. 'The way I look at it is something is happening, someone went and invested in a place that was going down, if the place was flourishing then the people wouldn't have sold it", said Mr Huppert. 'All the comments of 'we have just loss this', 'we have just lost that', this asset wasn't supported. 'The question is not should we have been allowed to come and do what we did, the question is why did the locals and whoever has bad feelings about what we have done, where has their support been all these years prior, it's easier to come back in hindsight.'

Talks under way about future of ex-pub building

Talks are under way about the future of a well-known former pub, a council leader says. Chambers in Gloucester was part of the city centre's nightlife for years but it was closed in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic and never reopened. Gloucester City Council leader Jeremy Hilton told councillors the local authority was "close to finishing discussions" with a food and beverage outlet. He said he could not reveal more details until "the legals have been done". The council had previously advertised the site on a leasehold basis and at least one bid was submitted which included a vision for a pub with a cafe, food and games space. However, nothing came from that proposal, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said. More news stories for Gloucestershire Listen to the latest news for Gloucestershire Conservative opposition leader of the council Stephanie Chambers called the building - which is currently boarded up in Kings Square - "derelict" and an "eyesore". "I wouldn't like to see some sort of nightclubby type place there," she told a council meeting on Thursday. The new tenants of the space would become part of the ongoing £200m regeneration of Gloucester city centre, alongside the soon-to-be finished University of Gloucestershire campus in the former Debenhams building and The Forum.
