KPJ Healthcare downgraded as valuations catch up: Analyst

KUALA LUMPUR: CIMB Securities has downgraded KPJ Healthcare Bhd to a "Hold" from "Buy", saying the group's share price has largely priced in operational improvements and the new management's swift execution.
In a note to clients, analyst Walter Aw said KPJ Healthcare's stock, which has surged 26.5 per cent year-to-date, is now trading close to two standard deviations above its five-year forward average valuation.
"At current levels, we believe valuations have caught up with fundamentals. The stock is now trading at a premium compared to its larger peer IHH Healthcare Bhd, based on projected 2026 earnings," he said.
Despite the downgrade, the firm raised its sum-of-parts-based target price for KPJ Healthcare to RM3 from RM2.80 previously, reflecting a higher valuation multiple of 12.3 times for the group's hospital operations.
The group's first quarter core net profit rose 23.6 per cent year-on-year to RM63.3 million, in line with consensus estimates. Revenue climbed seven per cent to RM971.8 million on increased bed capacity and higher patient volume.
However, the results were weaker on a quarter-on-quarter basis, with core net profit down 48.2 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2024, due to seasonal trends.
Aw said earnings momentum is expected to pick up in subsequent quarters, supported by bed capacity expansion, improved cost controls and narrowing losses from five newer hospitals that are still in their gestation phase.
CIMB Securities projects KPJ Heatlcare's core net profit to grow 12.9 per cent year-on-year in 2025, with revenue forecasted to rise 9.1 per cent to RM4.28 billion.
The group's bottom line is expected to benefit from ongoing cost optimisation, better operating leverage, and a strategy to attract more patients by building centres of excellence and hiring more specialists.
Despite these growth levers, the firm warned of downside risks including lower-than-expected patient traffic, slower hospital ramp-ups and thinner margins.
KPJ Healthcare was last traded at RM2.72, giving it a market capitalisation of RM12.31 billion.

Malaysia on track to become healthcare hub

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia is poised to be a major healthcare hub due to quality care, advancing technologies and growth in the sector, says MBSB Research. However, the research house said it believes challenges persist due to the country's ageing population, increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases and communicable diseases, as well as financing pressures. 'The challenges are no longer just about basic access, which has largely been achieved in Peninsular Malaysia, but about quality, efficiency, equity and sustainability in the face of rising costs and demand. 'Malaysia is not adhering rigidly to one ideological model – fully public or fully private. Instead, it's embracing a pragmatic, dual-tier system with increasing public-private partnerships,' the research house said. It pointed out that the Malaysian healthcare industry is in a critical phase of transformation, where the success of the journey will depend on the ability to effectively implement strategic changes. MBSB Research added that the country has a strong foundation in the healthcare sector as well as a clear understanding of its complex challenges and an ambitious roadmap for reform. The research house believes the country will need to sustain the political will to navigate the inherent difficulties of comprehensive reforms, ultimately aiming for a truly equitable, high-quality and sustainable healthcare system for all. It said it believes that the government's continued heavy subsidisation of public healthcare and the active pursuit of universal health coverage through various initiatives demonstrate a fundamental commitment to ensuring that healthcare remains a right for all citizens. This was evident by the Budget 2025's allocation of RM45.3bil for the local healthcare sector. 'The willingness to address high out-of-pocket payments also directly signifies a focus on financial-risk protection for its citizens,' it said. It added that the Health Ministry's emphasis on digitalisation, data analytics and value-based healthcare also indicates a forward-looking approach. MBSB Research maintained its 'positive' stance on the sector due to its resilient support from the government, the drive from ongoing trends and the leverage of contributing to local and regional economies. It expects the Malaysian healthcare sector's overall revenue to grow at a five-year compound annual growth rate of between 6% and 8% up to 2030. Its top pick for the sector is KPJ Healthcare Bhd , as it is well-positioned to capitalise on the sector's positive outlook due to its established market presence, strategic growth initiatives and improving financial performance. 'With its large network of private hospitals (30 hospitals and four ambulatory care centres), the group has strong brand recognition across the country while serving the growing domestic demand for quality and affordable private healthcare services,' the research house said. KPJ also has the advantage of improving its operational efficiencies through its 'KPJ Health System' framework, while heavily investing in digital capabilities with about RM400mil allocated for digitalisation and advanced medical technology. 'Overall, KPJ's robust growth strategy, strong financial performance and leading market position in a structurally growing sector make it an attractive proposition in the Malaysian healthcare landscape,' MBSB Research added.

GDP may ease to 4pct if US tariffs stay — analyst

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's gross domestic product (GDP) growth could moderate to four per cent this year if the existing 25 per cent United States (US) tariffs remain in place beyond the current pause ending on Aug 1. CIMB Securities, which maintains a baseline GDP growth forecast of 4.3 per cent for 2025, said the downside risk stems mainly from a potential drag on external demand. Malaysia's exports contracted 3.5 per cent year-on-year in June, extending the 1.2 per cent decline in May and missing market expectations for a rebound. The firm said the weakness was broad-based, led by slower shipments of electrical and electronics (E&E), palm oil-based products and metal exports, alongside a sharp drop in crude oil and liquefied natural gas exports. Manufacturing exports fell 3.3 per cent in June, weighed down by a deceleration in E&E growth to 1.3 per cent from seven per cent in May. Mining exports dropped 28.7 per cent, while agriculture shipments rose 17.5 per cent on stronger palm oil exports. CIMB Securities said front-loading activity, where exporters rush orders ahead of potential tariffs, had eased, particularly to the US, Taiwan and South Korea. Exports to the US rose just 4.7 per cent in June compared with a 16.1 per cent jump in May. Similarly, shipments to Taiwan grew 14.2 per cent versus 41.4 per cent previously, while exports to South Korea turned negative at -13.5 per cent. Shipments to major regional partners also weakened. Exports to China fell 9.3 per cent year-on-year, while those to Asean dropped 13.8 per cent. Exports to the European Union and Hong Kong also moderated. "With export front-loading easing, Malaysia's growth outlook is clouded by persistent global trade uncertainties and an uneven domestic recovery," the firm said. Malaysia's trade surplus widened to RM8.6 billion in June as imports also slowed, rising 1.2 per cent from a year ago versus 6.6 per cent in May. The moderation was largely due to slower capital goods imports, though consumption and intermediate goods imports saw some rebound. For the first half of 2025, the economy expanded by 4.4 per cent, down from 5.0 per cent in the same period last year. CIMB Securities maintained its full-year GDP forecast at 4.3 per cent but flagged that the outcome of US-Malaysia tariff negotiations could tilt the balance. "The sustainability of trade and investment momentum beyond the 90-day US tariff pause remains uncertain," it said.

Sarawak-linked stocks tipped to benefit from election-driven development boost

KUALA LUMPUR: Investor interest in Sarawak-linked stocks could pick up in the coming quarters as the state ramps up infrastructure and clean energy development ahead of its next election, which must be held by April 2027. CIMB Securities said the state's record-high RM15.8 billion budget for 2025, nearly 70 per cent of which is earmarked for development expenditure, along with its ambitious Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), could act as catalysts for related counters. "We expect renewed investor interest in Sarawak-linked names ahead of its state election," the brokerage said in a strategy note following a field trip to assess the state's growth prospects and strategic developments. Key potential beneficiaries include Gamuda Bhd, IJM Corp Bhd, Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd (CMS), Ibraco Bhd, CCK Consolidated Holdings Bhd and Supreme Consolidated Resources Bhd. Gamuda is seen as a frontrunner to secure road contracts worth RM1 billion, while IJM is re-establishing its presence through two contracts under the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS). Ibraco has expanded into water pipe and asphalt production, aligning with Sarawak's RM4 billion water grid upgrade initiative. The company's current order book stands at RM962 million, with ongoing work including the Samarahan bridge and road project, as well as the KUTS Blue Line. CIMB Securities said the scale of development spending under PCDS 2030 could create meaningful opportunities for listed companies with operations or supply chain exposure in Sarawak. CMS, one of the oldest listed companies in the state, is the sole integrated cement producer in Sarawak and recently secured a RM550 million contract to build the Borneo Convention Centre II. The company is also expanding clinker production capacity and holds road maintenance concessions covering 3,300 kilometres of state roads until 2029. CIMB noted that CMS shares are trading at a 60 per cent discount to book value, with the group backed by a net cash position of nearly RM500 million as at March 31. In the consumer space, food distributors CCK and Supreme are expected to benefit from rising disposable incomes and population growth. CCK operates 79 outlets across Sabah and Sarawak, maintains a net cash balance of RM201 million and is targeting three to four new store openings per year. Supreme is expanding its warehouse capacity in Kuching by 162 per cent and is trading at a 13 per cent discount to its net tangible asset value of RM0.27 per share. CIMB Securities said companies such as CCK and Supreme are seen as proxies to rising consumer demand in Sarawak, supported by the state's broader economic growth. Under PCDS 2030, Sarawak aims to become a developed, high-income state by 2030, with a gross domestic product target of RM282 billion, up from RM136 billion in 2019, implying an annual growth rate of around eight per cent. However, the firm noted that some large-scale projects, such as those involving green hydrogen and floating solar, may offer limited direct participation for listed local players in the near term due to high technical and capital requirements that favour foreign consortiums. Key risks to the Sarawak investment theme include external economic headwinds, funding constraints, talent shortages and increasing competition from unlisted and foreign contractors.
