KUCHING (July 4): Eleven-year-old singing sensation Taylor Louise from Kuching is set to make her national musical theatre debut as the youngest cast member of Dreamweaver The Musical — Sarawak's first original English-language musical theatre production.
The highly anticipated show will take place at the Petaling Jaya Performing Arts Centre (PJPAC), 1 Utama, with three performances scheduled — one on August 29 and two on August 30 — bringing Sarawak's cultural narrative to Klang Valley audiences for the first time.
'This is such a big opportunity for me, and I'm really excited to be part of it,' Taylor, who has already begun rehearsals with the cast, told The Borneo Post today.
'I laughed so much during rehearsals, I had no more energy left! I already love my Dreamweaver fam,' she added.
Produced by Tanoti and Balkon Media, Dreamweaver The Musical features an ensemble of Malaysian performers and tells a powerful story of sisterhood, courage, and the fight to preserve a fading art form — Sarawak's treasured songket weaving tradition.
With an original script and score, the musical presents the richness of Sarawakian heritage through a bold, contemporary lens.
The production marks a major milestone in Taylor's artistic journey and highlights the growing national and global presence of Sarawakian talent.
In 2024, Taylor was named Division Champion and won Gold First at the World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in Los Angeles.
She later secured double championship titles at the Asia Students Arts Festival in Singapore and Hong Kong.
Earlier this year, she represented Malaysia at the Sanremo Junior World Finals in Italy, earning a Special Mention and finishing among the Top 5 global finalists.
Her achievements continued at the Song International Singing Competition UK, where she won Platinum for Vocal Pop and Gold for Musical Theatre.
She also earned top honours at the Golden Prestige International, GYMC, GASCA International, and the North American Virtuoso International Music Competition — including the prestigious Top Gold Prize.
At the Saint-Saëns International Music Competition, Taylor received the Saint-Saëns Special Award for Superior Interpretation, alongside Platinum for Vocal Pop and Gold for Musical.
Taylor credits her vocal coach, Sabrina Tnay, for her development.
'I'm very thankful to Coach Sabrina for always encouraging me and helping me grow,' said Taylor.
In August, Taylor will also perform at the prestigious Britten Theatre, Royal College of Music, London — once again representing Malaysia on an international stage.
Audiences in Klang Valley will have the opportunity to catch the rising Sarawakian star live during the three-show run of Dreamweaver The Musical at PJPAC on Aug 29 and 30. Dreamweaver: The Musical Kuching singing sensation taylor louise

Top Sarawak cultural dancers have opportunities to gain global exposure, says Snowdan

He said such initiatives allow Sarawak's unique cultural identity to be presented on the global stage, while providing invaluable experience for the performers. In fact, he said the ministry has been sending cultural dance troupes abroad in the past several years now. 'Sometimes, there are international events held abroad that invite participation from various countries, requesting them to showcase cultural dances. 'And sometimes they invite us, so that's why our ministry, we can send people – dance troupes from Sarawak, whether from Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu, Miri, as long as they are very good; they are good dancers of world-class caliber,' he told The Borneo Post when contacted for clarification on a point raised during his speech at the opening of the 21st Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) on Friday. According to Snowdan, the dance troupes must be part of registered associations or clubs, recognised by the Registrar of Societies (ROS), and subsequently registered with the ministry. 'So, it takes turns, sometimes from Sibu, sometimes from Bintulu, Miri or Kuching – for them to showcase our cultural dances from Melanau, Orang Ulu, Chinese, Iban (community), and so on, overseas. 'So that's why through our ministry, because we have a yearly budget to send the dance troupe to perform overseas,' he said. Snowdan encouraged local associations to register with the ministry and submit performance videos for consideration. 'And then, if your dance is really of very high standard, then we can always propose them next time to perform overseas, if there is an invitation,' he added, citing a recent example where Sarawak sent a 20-member dance group to an international event in the Philippines, which included participants from Korea and Japan. He said the entire trip was funded by the ministry, and the group performed in full traditional attire. He said similar performances have taken place in Bali, Jogjakarta, the United Kingdom, and Spain in recent years. During his visit to Bintulu, Miri, and other locations, Snowdan said he has been actively encouraging more associations to register, stressing the need to broaden opportunities. 'We want to open up the opportunities to other groups as we do not wish to be always sending the same group overseas. 'But they have to register with us. And then, of course, they must provide their video to us to show how good they are. 'And last time, we sent some dance groups also to Bali, and then to Jogja to perform, as well as to the UK and Spain,' he said. Snowdan also praised the 180-member dance troupe that performed during the BCF opening, describing their display as 'world-class'. He noted that Sarawak is targeting five million tourist arrivals by the end of 2025, expressing hope that events like the BCF will help boost visitor numbers. On a related note, he revealed that the number of gazetted ethnic groups in Sarawak has increased to 34, up from 27 previously. He also voiced optimism that Sibu could eventually be elevated to city status. BCF 2025 cultural dancers Sibu Snowdan Lawan

Year 3 Sarawak pupil makes Malaysia proud in Dance World Cup

KUCHING: Dion Das Louis, a Year 3 pupil of SK Green Road here, has made Malaysia proud when he won silver at the final of Dance World Cup in Burgos, Spain, today. Dion, better known as the Little Bornean Birdie, represented Malaysia in the Mini Solo National and Folklore category. He performed the Iban traditional dance known as "Ajat", which symbolises two of Sarawak's most iconic birds, the majestic burung ruai (great argus) and the burung kenyalang (hornbill). Facing stiff competition from 34 international dancers, Dion scored an outstanding 93.8 per cent, missing the gold medal by a razor-thin margin of just 0.3 per cent. Nevertheless, it was a proud moment for Sarawak and Malaysia on the global stage. According to the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), Dion's two-minute music composition, which captivated the judges with its rich Bornean rhythms and emotive storytelling, was created by Sarawak's very own Sada Borneo, with an additional track provided by the acclaimed world music band At Adau. His stunning costume – a bold and elegant fusion of tradition and innovation – was designed by Gilbert Headhunter, a Sarawakian designer based in Kuala Lumpur, known for his edgy takes on indigenous fashion. According to Ukas, the achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering support of generous sponsors and cultural champions. Dion's trip was sponsored by the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Sarawak Land and Rehabilitation Authority, Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, Ghee Hua Group of Companies, Kelab Kaban Golf Samarahan, International Education Legacy Foundation and the United Asia Entrepreneur Chamber of Commerce.

#SHOWBIZ: Jamal Abdillah: Alamak, I got another 'special grandchild'

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian music icon Datuk Jamal Abdillah, 66, has announced the unusual birth of a five-legged calf on his integrated cattle farm in Bukit Merah, Perak. The legendary singer shared a video of the special male calf with close contacts via a WhatsApp broadcast, expressing his surprise and delight. "Oh my, I've got another 'grandchild' but his legs are extra long and 'special'," Datuk Jamal was quoted as saying, referring to the unique anatomical feature of the newborn calf. He further elaborated on the calf's distinctiveness: "But what's strange is that this male calf has extra legs, meaning it has five legs. This special calf is unique and I will not sell it and plan to continue to keep it." Datuk Jamal, who has rekindled his passion for cattle farming, also shared an update on the thriving state of his farm. "Actually, I enjoy raising cows and it's just a hobby," he explained. He revealed that he has been raising 25 integrated cows for approximately a year and five months. These cows were provided by the Pertubuhan Peladang Kawasan for breeding purposes, with the understanding that they can be sold within five years. "I also took in a lot of female cows so that they would grow easily. Alhamdulillah, this is the second year and the cattle business is also thriving," he added, expressing gratitude for the farm's success. Datuk Jamal Abdillah initially ventured into commercial cattle farming in May 2023, operating his farm which spans almost two hectares in Bukit Merah.
