How's Your AQ? Why Adaptive Intelligence Is Key For Managers

In a world where change is the only constant, our greatest risk isn't ignorance — it's certainty.
Executives often pride themselves on their ability to recognize patterns and make quick decisions, grounded in hard-earned expertise. This may be valid in stable environments, but when the ground shifts — through technological disruption, changing consumer behavior or global shocks — those once-reliable patterns can quickly become traps.
Faced with this dilemma, people often double down on past strategies precisely when they should be reexamining their long-held assumptions. Mental models — the internal maps we use to make sense of how the world works — can start acting as blinders rather than guides.
This dynamic shows up across all types of organizations. But in the family-owned firms I work with and study, where identity, legacy and deep emotional ties run deep, the pressure to preserve tradition can make strategic shifts even more challenging.
This is where adaptive intelligence (AQ) becomes essential.
What is AQ?
If IQ reflects reasoning ability and EQ captures emotional insight, AQ is the capacity to adapt when reality fails to align with our expectations.
It enables us to detect when our assumptions, habits and beliefs are obsolete and update them accordingly. AQ helps us unlearn what no longer serves us and remain open to learning in real time.
In the context of family business, this ability is vital. The stronger the legacy, the easier it is to become overconfident. And the longer a playbook has delivered success, the harder it is to discern when it's time for a rewrite.
When traditions become barriers
Our brains are built for stability. We seek predictability and use mental shortcuts to make decisions quickly. These shortcuts are efficient but naturally conservative.
Once we develop a mental model — about a customer, a strategy or a market — we tend to ignore data that doesn't fit. Sometimes we even distort the information to confirm what we already believe. That's confirmation bias.
In family firms, this tendency is frequently intensified by emotional attachment to the past. Narratives like 'this is how my father ran the business' or 'we've always done it this way' can create a sense of consistency, but they can also evolve into unexamined rules that limit innovation.
The cost of certainty
Consider a second-generation industrial firm built on product quality and long-term supplier relationships. This approach worked well for decades, yet as customer expectations shifted toward speed, digital convenience and sustainability, the leadership continued to lean on its traditional strengths.
Younger family members pushed for change, but senior leaders dismissed their warnings. 'Our clients value relationships,' they insisted. 'They trust us.'
By the time the higher-ups recognized the shift, more agile competitors had taken the lead. Their brand had lost relevance — not because they lacked effort or talent, but because they failed to question an outdated mental model.
Building adaptive intelligence in your company
The good news is that AQ can be developed. It's not a fixed trait but rather a mindset and set of skills that any business leader, regardless of the type of company, can cultivate.
1. Make the invisible visible
Adaptability starts with metacognition — the ability to reflect on how we think. Ask yourself: What assumptions are shaping our decisions? Which beliefs are we treating as facts? What 'truths' might no longer hold?
Family firms often operate under invisible rules around loyalty, authority and risk. By making these rules explicit, the leaders of family-owned firms are able to question whether they still support organizational strategy.
2. Practice intellectual humility
AQ hinges on the willingness to admit, 'I might be wrong.' This humility must be modeled by leaders at all levels, particularly those with the most experience.
Encourage open questions and respectful disagreement. Make it safe to challenge long-standing views — not to undermine tradition, but to ensure the company stays relevant.
3. Run 'what if' scenarios together
Ask yourself tough, forward-thinking questions: What if our flagship product becomes obsolete? What if a digital disruptor enters our market? What if key family members clash over the future direction of the firm?
These scenarios are not predictions: they're exercises. The goal is to stress-test your assumptions and prime your mindset for the unexpected. Simply discussing these possibilities together across generations and roles can reveal blind spots and highlight mental models that need updating.
In many family firms, these conversations only happen when a crisis arises. Establishing the habit earlier sharpens your adaptive intelligence before you need it most.
4. Design for diversity
Firms can unintentionally become echo chambers, especially when leadership is drawn from a narrow pool, as is the case with some family firms.
To break this cycle, bring in non-family executives, appoint independent board members and encourage next-generation family members to gain experience in other industries and cultures. AQ thrives when we are exposed to different ways of thinking.
5. Redefine failure and success
In many family businesses, failure is often seen as personal, like a stain on the family's reputation. But when mistakes are punished or hidden, innovation stops in its tracks.
Instead, reframe failure as part of the learning process. Celebrate thoughtful risks and create space to share what didn't work, what surprised you and what was learned.
AQ as a legacy skill
The most enduring family businesses pass down more than equity and ancestry — they pass down a mindset, a commitment to adapt, to stay alert and to lead with both curiosity and conviction.
Adaptive intelligence may not show up on a balance sheet, but it could be your most valuable asset. It safeguards against complacency and ensures that your legacy stays dynamic and relevant.
Unlike your founding year or family name, AQ is something every generation must earn — by staying open to growth.

Crude prices came under pressure Friday after President Trump late Thursday announced a 10% global minimum and 15% or higher tariffs for countries with trade surpluses with the US, effective after midnight on August 7. The higher tariffs could weigh on global economic growth and energy demand. Friday's US economic news was weaker than expected and bearish for energy demand and crude prices. Jul nonfarm payrolls rose +73,000, weaker than expectations of +104,000, and Jun nonfarm payrolls were revised downward to +14,000 from the previously reported +147,000. Also, the Jul ISM manufacturing index unexpectedly fell -1.0 to 48.0, weaker than expectations of an increase to 49.5 and the steepest pace of contraction in 9 months. Crude prices have support after President Trump said on Monday that he would impose a new deadline of 10 days for Russia to reach a truce with Ukraine before he increases sanctions on Russian energy exports. JPMorgan Chase warned that if enforced, oil markets would be unable to ignore the impact of triple-digit tariffs on Russian oil, given the significant scale of Russian exports and limited OPEC spare capacity, which could potentially lead to a supply shock. The European Union recently approved fresh sanctions on Russian oil due to its aggression against Ukraine. The sanctions package includes cutting off 20 more Russian banks from the international payments system SWIFT, as well as restrictions imposed on Russian petroleum refined in other countries. A large oil refinery in India, part-owned by Russia's Rosneft PJSC, was also blacklisted. Additionally, 105 more ships in Russia's shadow fleet were sanctioned, pushing the number of sanctioned ships above 400. In a supportive factor for oil prices, Bloomberg reported on July 10 that OPEC+ is discussing a pause in further production increases from October, following its next monthly hike in September of 548,000 barrels. OPEC+ may be concerned about a slowdown in global oil demand in the second half of this year that could lead to a supply glut if the group keeps boosting production. The International Energy Agency said inventories have been accumulating at a rate of 1 million bpd and that the global crude oil market faces a surplus by Q4-2025 equivalent to 1.5% of global crude consumption. OPEC+ will meet again this Sunday and is expected to boost its production again by 548,000 barrels per day (bpd) beginning September 1. Concern about a global oil glut is negative for crude prices. On July 5, OPEC+ agreed to raise its crude production by 548,000 bpd beginning August 1, exceeding expectations of a 411,000 bpd increase. Saudi Arabia also stated that additional similar-sized increases in crude output could follow, which is viewed as a strategy to reduce oil prices and penalize overproducing OPEC+ members, such as Kazakhstan and Iraq. OPEC+ is boosting output to reverse the 2-year-long production cut, gradually restoring a total of 2.2 million bpd of production by September 2026. On May 31, OPEC+ agreed to a 411,000 bpd increase in crude production for July, following the same 411,000 bpd hike for June. June crude production rose +360,000 bpd to a 1.5-year high of 28.10 million bpd. Oil prices have been undercut by expectations for Iraq to boost crude exports from its northern Kurdish region through the Iraq-Turkey pipeline, where oil exports have been halted since March 2023. The Iraqi government approved a plan for the semi-autonomous Kurdish region to resume oil exports. Kurdistan expects to supply Iraq's crude market with 230,000 bpd of crude once exports resume. Iraq is the second-largest oil producer in OPEC. An increase in crude oil held worldwide on tankers is bearish for oil prices. Vortexa reported Monday that crude oil stored on tankers that have been stationary for at least seven days rose by +23% w/w to 84.99 million bbl in the week ended July 25. Wednesday's weekly EIA report showed that (1) US crude oil inventories as of July 25 were -5.6% below the seasonal 5-year average, (2) gasoline inventories were -0.7% below the seasonal 5-year average, and (3) distillate inventories were -15.2% below the 5-year seasonal average. US crude oil production in the week ending July 25 rose +0.3% w/w to 13.314 million bpd, modestly below the record high of 13.631 million bpd posted in the week of 12/6/2024. Baker Hughes reported Friday that the number of active US oil rigs in the week ending August 1 decreased by -5 rigs to a new 3.75-year low of 410 rigs. Over the past 2.5 years, the number of US oil rigs has fallen sharply from the 5.25-year high of 627 rigs reported in December 2022. Mastercard Q2 Earnings Beat Estimates on Robust Consumer Spending

Mastercard Incorporated MA reported second-quarter 2025 adjusted earnings of $4.15 per share, which surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 2.5%. The bottom line improved 16% year over year. Net revenues advanced 16.8% year over year to $8.1 billion. The top line beat the consensus mark by 1.9%. The strong quarterly results reflect benefits from increased gross dollar volume, cross-border volumes, strong demand for value-added services and growth in transactions due to robust consumer spending on travel and leisure. However, the upside was partly offset by escalating operating expenses and higher rebates and incentives. The metric beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 1.9%. Cross-border volumes (a key measure that tracks spending on cards beyond the issuing country) rose 15% on a local currency basis. Switched transactions, which indicate the number of times a company's products have been used to facilitate transactions, improved 10% year over year to 43.5 billion. The metric missed the consensus mark by a whisker. Value-added services and solutions' net revenues of $3.2 billion advanced 23% year over year. Also, the same beat our model estimate of $2.9 billion. The year-over-year growth was driven by acquisitions, higher demand for consumer acquisition and engagement, as well as business and market insight services. Also, the scaling of its security and digital and authentication solutions and improving pricing strategies, aided the metric. Payment network rebates and incentives increased 17% year over year as a result of new and renewed deals. Mastercard's clients issued 3.6 billion Mastercard and Maestro-branded cards as of June 30, 2025. Adjusted operating expenses escalated 15% year over year to $3.3 billion due to increased general, administrative, advertising and marketing expenses. Total assets of $51.4 billion increased from the $48.1 billion figure at 2024-end. Long-term debt amounted to $19 billion, up from the $17.5 billion figure as of Dec. 31, 2024. Total equity of $7.9 billion rose from the 2024-end level of $6.5 billion. Mastercard generated cash flows from operations of $7 billion in the first half of 2025, which advanced from the prior-year period's $4.8 billion. Mastercard's Capital Deployment Update Mastercard bought back 4.2 million shares for $2.3 billion in the second quarter. Quarter to date through July 28, it bought back another 1.8 million shares for $1 billion, leaving a buyback capacity of $9.3 billion. Mastercard paid out dividends worth $691 million in the quarter under review. Mastercard's 3Q25 Guidance Management projects adjusted net revenues to register high end of mid-teens growth on a year-over-year basis in the third quarter of 2025, while adjusted operating expenses are also anticipated to record high end of mid-teens growth. Mastercard's 2025 View Management now estimates adjusted net revenues to witness high end of mid-teens growth in 2025 from the 2024 figure. Here's how they have performed: Visa reported third-quarter fiscal 2025 EPS of $2.98, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.86 by 4.2%, thanks to higher processed transactions, payments and cross-border volumes. Ethena's USDe Outpaces BlackRock's Bitcoin, Ether ETFs With $3.1B Inflow Surge

Ethena's synthetic stablecoin, USDe, has crossed $8.4 billion in supply, adding more than $3.14 billion over 20 days in a surge that outpaced flows into BlackRock's (BLK) flagship bitcoin and ether exchange-traded funds. According to on-chain data curated by the Ethena community, the supply increase since July 17 is the fastest period of growth since the protocol's inception in February 2024. Inflow into the yield-bearing stablecoin exceeds the $2.75 billion added to BlackRock's ether ETF (ETHA) and the $1.60 billion into its bitcoin ETF (IBIT) in the same period, making the DeFi-native stablecoin the biggest magnet for capital across both on- and off-chain markets in recent weeks. The rally has spilled over into Ethena's governance token ENA, which more than doubled in the past month, though it is down 12% in the past 24 hours as traders hope the long-awaited fee switch will soon activate. The protocol has already surpassed most of the thresholds required to distribute revenue to staked ENA holders, with the final benchmark, a favorable yield spread versus rivals, expected to be met soon. USDe's reflexive loop USDe's recent growth reflects a powerful reflexive loop built into its core design, as Nansen explained in a recent research report on the Ethena ecosystem. As bitcoin and ether prices rally, perpetual funding rates in turn increasingly positive. Ethena captures this funding via delta-neutral hedges, and distributes it as real-time yield to sUSDe holders. That higher yield then draws in more users, leading to greater USDe issuance, more hedging, and more protocol revenue. In the last month, Ethena has brought in nearly $50 million in feed and $10 million in revenue, according to DeFiLlama data. This makes it the sixth best-performing protocol for monthly fee revenue according to the data aggregator. ENA is currently trading for $0.58.
