Train fare hike is not consistent with BJP's 'Country First' ideology: Mayawati

Lucknow, July 1 (UNI) Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Tuesday criticised the BJP government at the centre for hiking railway passenger fares.
She also slammed the Centre for increasing the burden on the common man on the one hand yet claiming that they follow the ideology of 'country first'.
She demanded that the government immediately withdraw the hike.
In a press release here on Tuesday, Behenji said when the country men are facing poverty, unemployment and other issues then increasing the railway fare shows the central government's commercial bent of mind. She termed the step against the ineterst of the general public and the objectives of the Constitution.
She explained that rail journey is not a luxury for most people but a necessity due to the compulsion to migrate in search of better economic opportunities.
"Therefore, instead of worrying only for its own benefit and for a handful of rich people, the government should appropriately worry about the crores of people of the country who are craving to live a life of self-esteem in the absence of employment," she added.

PM Modi to be conferred Trinidad &Tobago's highest honour

Port of Spain/New Delhi, July 4 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will today receive the 'Order of Trinidad and Tobago', the highest honor of the country on the second day of his visit to the Caribbean nation. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar had yesterday announced that Trinidad and Tobago would confer the award on the visiting Indian Prime Minister. The Prime Minister expressed his heartfelt gratitude to her and the people of Trinidad and Tobago for this honor. This would be Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 25th international honour. Modi, who is in Trinidad and Tobago as part of his five-nation tour, will hold talks with the top leadership of Trinidad and Tobago to further strengthen bilateral relations. Earlier, PM Modi was received by his counterpart Persad-Bissessar at Piarco International Airport, where he was accorded a ceremonial welcome and a guard of honour. While addressing an Indian community event in Trinidad and Tobago, Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar hailed the relationship between the two nations and said, "These are ties of ancestry, of kinship, of sacrifice, and of love. We are bound by history, by shared struggle, and we're bound by common dreams. Through your benevolence, you brought hope and calm where there was fear. This was more than diplomacy. This was an act of kinship, shared humanity, and love. This is one of the many reasons we are deeply proud to bestow upon you The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, our nation's highest honor, to be conferred tomorrow..." The Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago praised PM Modi's leadership, calling him a "transformational force who has refined the governance of India." She stated that PM Modi has modernized India's economy through his visionary and futuristic initiatives. While addressing the Indian community event in Trinidad and Tobago, Persad-Bissessar said, "What inspires this gathering most is your enduring commitment to the Indian diaspora, promoting culture, history, and the spirit of our shared journey. The ties that bind India and Trinidad and Tobago are not merely diplomatic in nature." Addressing the community event, PM Persad-Bissessar said, "Namaste, Sita-Ram, and good evening. This evening, we are graced by the presence of someone near and dear to us. We are graced by a leader whose visit is not just a matter of protocol but a profound honor for us. So, I am deeply privileged to join everyone here in welcoming one of the world's most respected and admired visionary leaders, the Honourable Shri Narendra Modiji, Prime Minister of the Republic of India, and his delegation on this very historic state visit to Trinidad and Tobago. Prime Minister Modi, your presence is a great inspiration to all of us, particularly to the Indo-Trinidadian community, whose roots are planted in the same blessed Indian soil from which you emerged." Recalling Modi's earlier visit to Trinidad and Tobago in 2002, when he was not Prime Minister of India, she stated that he returned to Trinidad and Tobago as a "distinguished and celebrated leader" whose influence transcends borders. Mentioning the Fatel Razack, the first ship that carried Indians to Trinidad in 1845, she said, "On your first visit to our country, you were not then Prime Minister. But as part of a cultural ambassador, as part of the World Hindu Conference in 2002. Today, sir, you return as the head of a government of more than 1.4 billion people. You return as a distinguished and celebrated leader whose influence transcends boundaries. We bow to you, sir." The visit is of particular significance as it represents PM Modi's first official trip to the Caribbean nation as India's Prime Minister, and is also the first bilateral Prime Ministerial-level visit from India to Trinidad and Tobago since 1999. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the last Prime Minister to have visited the country in 1999. UNI AAB RKM

'Is Election Commission God?': Pappu Yadav's 'do-or-die battle' call as roll revision row heats up

NEW DELHI: , who is a Congress-leaning Independent Lok Sabha MP, made a call for the "do-or-die battle" over the 's (ECI) move to revise the electoral roll as part of its special intensive revision (SIR) ahead of the . Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Labelling the poll body as "office of the ," the Purnia MP asked if the "Election Commission was God?" Pappu Yadav, who is a six-time MP, said he would lay his life for "the identity of Bihar and Bihari". "The commission is precisely the office of the RSS and should be stopped. The people are ready to end anything that threatens constitutional responsibility. Talks have been held with the Congress incharge regarding this... Is the Election Commission God?... There will be a battle across the state. And for the identity of Bihar and Bihari, if we have to sacrifice our lives, then we will do it," Pappu Yadav told news agency ANI. Earlier in the day, Congress alleged that the poll body's special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar was a "sinister exercise" to deprive lakhs of voters of their franchise and a clear effort to "destroy" the electoral system in the state. In a post on X, Congress general secretary in-charge organisation, K C Venugopal, said, "This government specialises in giving people hell. The SIR is a sinister exercise to deprive lakhs of voters of their franchise." "The unnecessary haste, and their absolute refusal to address genuine concerns raised by the Opposition, points to this being a clear effort to destroy the electoral system in Bihar," he said. "We will not let this go through. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now They must halt this ridiculous exercise immediately," Venugopal said. On Wednesday, leaders of several INDIA bloc parties met the EC over the SIR issue and raised concerns over its timing, alleging that over two crore voters of the state may be disenfranchised by this mammoth exercise being done just ahead of assembly elections. The Election Commission on Thursday said it has decoded the entire exercise to a group of opposition parties to assuage their fears. While the EC said that the revision, happening after 22 years, is in line with the Constitution and the Representation of the People Act, opposition parties claim the timing is suspiciously close to the assembly polls and could "skew the voter base". The opposition has maintained that a revision this close to elections casts doubt on the EC's intentions. However, contrary to their protests, opposition parties have gone all in. The RJD has deployed 47,143 BLAs, second only to BJP's 51,964. Congress has appointed 8,586, while Left outfits like CPI(ML), CPM, and CPI have sent in their own agents. On the NDA side, JDU, LJP, and RLSP have mobilised more than 30,000 BLAs in total.
