Wealthsimple launches credit card, lines of credit

Yahoo16-06-2025

In a significant move to diversify its financial services, Wealthsimple Inc. has unveiled its inaugural credit card and line of credit offerings. This expansion marks a bold step in the company's strategy to compete directly with Canada's established banking institutions.
The fintech company is also enhancing its existing services by introducing new features to its chequing account platform, which was initially launched in 2020. These additions include mobile cheque deposits, wire transfer capabilities and bank draft services — bringing its functionality closer to that of traditional banks.
Wealthsimple launched several new banking features, including a credit card offering 2% cash back rewards. The company also announced plans to introduce a line of credit by year-end, with rates starting at 4.45%, notably lower than the current prime rate of 4.95%.
The fintech company is expanding its services with complimentary bank draft delivery to recipients. Additionally, customers will have the option to use their Wealthsimple account balances as security for lines of credit.
Despite these new features and services, it remains uncertain whether Wealthsimple can successfully capture significant market share from Canada's Big Six banks — RBC, TD, BMO, CIBC, Scotiabank and National Bank.
Wealthsimple has positioned itself to capitalize on changing consumer behaviours by introducing innovative financial products. The company's strategic focus on digital-first banking solutions comes at a time when Canadians are increasingly seeking alternatives to traditional banking services.
The fintech company's expansion into retail banking services marks a significant shift in the Canadian financial landscape. By offering competitive rates and eliminating common fees, Wealthsimple is directly challenging established banks' long-standing fee structures.
These new banking products represent a deliberate move to address consumer pain points, particularly around transaction costs and international banking fees. By offering free ATM withdrawals and the elimination of foreign exchange fees, Wealthsimple is specifically targeting frequent travelers and cross-border shoppers who have historically faced substantial banking charges.
In addition to facing competition from other fintech companies, Wealthsimple faces significant challenges in its efforts to compete with Canada's major banks. The Canadian financial sector is highly concentrated, with the six largest banks controlling 93% of banking assets. While Wealthsimple manages approximately $70 billion in client assets — comparable to EQ Bank's $74 billion as Canada's seventh-largest bank — this figure pales in comparison to RBC's substantial $1.4 trillion in assets under management.

US tech giants saved billions with Canada backing off its digital services tax

US tech giants came close to paying billions to Canada under a new tax law. Had Canada not halted a digital services tax enacted in 2024 that applies retroactively to 2022, US tech giants would have needed to pay Canada approximately $3 billion upfront on Monday, on top of a 3% levy on all revenue earned from digital services linked to Canadian users going forward. The Computer & Communications Industry Association estimated that Canada's tax measure would lead to annual losses of between $900 million and $2.3 billion for US firms and could result in up to 3,000 job losses in the country. In a separate estimate by Canada's Parliamentary Budget Officer in 2023, the DST would generate CA$7.2 billion in revenue for the government over five years, which is about $5.29 billion at the current exchange rate. The digital services tax, which is a tax on companies that earn revenue in Canada through social media advertisements and other online services, was halted on Sunday after President Donald Trump announced on his social media on Friday that the US would be "terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada" over the measure. Canadian Minister of Finance and National Revenue François-Philippe Champagne will introduce legislation to officially rescind the tax. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also discussed launching a Section 301 investigation on Canada's tax measure on CNBC on Friday. "Today's announcement will support a resumption of negotiations toward the July 21, 2025, timeline set out at this month's G7 Leaders' Summit in Kananaskis," wrote Mark Carney, Canada's Prime Minister, in a statement posted by Canada's Department of Finance. The tax measure would have applied to tech companies with worldwide annual revenues greater than 750 million euros ($885 million) and Canadian digital services revenue greater than $20 million a year. Services subject to the tax include advertising, social media, and marketplaces, and large tech companies in the US, like Meta, Amazon, and Apple, would primarily be affected. Canada is the US's second-largest trading partner and the top buyer of US exports. According to the Census Bureau, the northern neighbour bought $349.4 billion in US exports in 2024 and exported $412.7 billion worth of goods across the border. Canada has been spared from some of Trump's highest tariffs, but still faces a 50% duty on steel and aluminum. Canada is not the first or the only country to propose a digital services tax. Both France and the UK have similar measures aimed at taxing revenue generated by large multinational digital companies. The White House has restarted trade talks with Canada following the scrapped tax policy. Carney's office, the White House, Meta, and Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comments.

First tanker carrying LNG for export departs northern B.C.

KITIMAT - LNG Canada says a tanker has begun its journey across the Pacific to bring Canada's first cargoes of liquefied natural gas to Asia. The tanker GasLog Glasgow has departed Kitimat, B.C., in northern British Columbia. The project has been billed by the federal government as the biggest private-sector investment in Canadian history – $40 billion between the port operation, the northeast B.C. gas fields supplying it and the pipeline in between. LNG Canada is a joint venture between Shell and four Asian partners and its first phase is expected to produce 14 million tonnes of gas a year. CEO Chris Cooper says the departure of the first cargo is a truly historic moment, and that recent world events show a reliable source of energy can never be taken for granted. LNG Canada's startup comes as Canada seeks to diversify its export markets beyond the United States as tariff and annexation threats fray that once-stable trading relationship. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 30, 2025.
