NGOs sue Belgium to do more to stop Israel's war in Gaza

Two Belgian NGOs launched a court case on Friday seeking to pressure the country to do more to help stop Israel's war in Gaza, as the European Union struggles to take action. Belgium has been one of the most outspoken of the EU's 27 countries in seeking to call out Israel over its devastating military operation in Gaza. The EU's top diplomat floated a raft of options after Israel was found to have breached a cooperation agreement with the EU on human rights grounds. But the bloc's member states are deeply divided over their approach to the conflict and have failed to act together to take any significant measures against Israel. The two organisations behind the court case, the Belgian-Palestinian Association and National Coordination for Peace and Democracy, are pushing for Belgium to try to unilaterally halt the EU's cooperation deal with Israel. They are also demanding other steps, including the closure of the country's airspace for any flights taking military equipment to Israel. "Unless there is a sudden change, the European Union will not be able to suspend the association agreement with Israel," Vincent Letellier, a lawyer representing the NGOs, told AFP, alluding to the bloc's divisions. "Countries must now be put under pressure by their voters and by the courts." A preliminary hearing in the case was held before a judge in Brussels on Friday and complete proceedings were scheduled for Sept. 15. International criticism of Israel is growing over the plight of the more than two million Palestinians in Gaza, where more than 100 aid and rights groups have warned that "mass starvation" is spreading. Hamas' October 2023 attacks in Israel resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures. Of the 251 hostages taken during the attack, 49 are still being held in Gaza, including 27, the Israeli military says, are dead. Israel's retaliatory military campaign in Gaza has killed 59,587 Palestinians, mostly civilians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. The United Nations considers the Ministry's figures to be reliable.

Boutros Harb denies misconduct, calls for investigative committee over telecom ministry accusations

Former MP Boutros Harb responded from Parliament to the accusations against him as a former telecommunications minister, saying: 'Today I stand accused, even though I have always had a clear conscience, as I never broke the law but rather protected public funds.' He added, 'I was the first MP and minister in Lebanon to file a wealth disclosure in accordance with the illicit enrichment law. I refused to let this case remain hanging over my head as an accusation of waste, when everything I did was aimed at preventing waste.' Regarding the lease contract for the Kassabian building, Harb said he has documents proving the building is structurally unfit to bear the weight of the equipment and requires renovation. 'I was the one who decided to cancel the contract and stop the waste. The real waste of public funds would have been not to cancel it,' he said. 'I'm surprised Judge Bayram ruled against prosecuting those who signed the original contract.' He concluded, 'I have never committed a single violation in my life. I support the formation of an investigative committee and am fully prepared to cooperate with any committee that is established.'

Belgium questions two Israelis over war crimes accusations

Belgian authorities said on Monday that they had briefly held and questioned two israeli citizens who attended an electronic music festival, after pro-Palestinian groups accused them of war crimes. Prosecutors said they received legal complaints alleging that two Israeli soldiers responsible for "serious violations of international humanitarian law" in Gaza were spotted at the Tomorrowland festival near the northern city of Antwerp last week. The federal prosecutor's office said it had "asked the police to locate the two people named in the complaint and to interview them". "Following these interviews, they were released," it said in a statement. The office said that it took action after concluding that Belgian courts have extraterritorial jurisdiction over alleged war crimes. "No further information will be given at this stage of the investigation," the office said. The pair have not been named. Last week, the Hind Rajab Foundation (HRF), a Belgian pro-Palestinian organisation, said it had identified two Israeli soldiers "responsible for grave international crimes" in Gaza among the crowds at Tomorrowland. It claimed that a group of young Israeli men was seen at the festival waving a flag of the Givati Brigade, an Israeli military unit involved in the fighting in the Palestinian territory. HRF said it then filed a complaint with prosecutors in association with the Global Legal Action Network, a lawyers group specialising in human rights violations. One of the world's largest electronic music festivals, Tomorrowland draws music enthusiasts from all over the world. About 400,000 people are expected to attend the event this year over two weekends. Hamas's October 7 attack on Israel triggered the war in Gaza, where Israel's retaliatory campaign has killed more than 58,000 people, mostly civilians, according to the Hamas-run territory's health ministry. The UN considers the figures reliable. Hamas's attack resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, also mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures.
