2nd ASEAN-GCC Summit paves way for enhanced inter-regional collaboration, resilience building
KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Enhancing inter-regional collaboration and building resilience to navigate an increasingly complex global landscape marked by economic uncertainty and geopolitical challenges will be high on the agenda of the 2nd ASEAN-GCC Summit, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said here on Tuesday.
In his remarks at the opening of the summit, Anwar said the two parties had made rapid strides forward on their three key pillars of cooperation -- political-security, economic, and socio-cultural -- since its inaugural summit two years ago, but this must now be strengthened to face new developments in global affairs.
"I believe the ASEAN-GCC partnership has never been more important than it is today, as we navigate an increasingly complex global landscape marked by economic uncertainty and geopolitical challenges ... ASEAN and the GCC have the means and the responsibility to rise as anchors of stability and engines of future growth," he said.
"A stronger ASEAN-GCC relationship will be key to enhancing interregional collaboration, building resilience, and securing sustainable prosperity for our peoples," he said, adding that members of the two groupings must translate their shared vision into concrete and impactful cooperation.
For his part, Crown Prince of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah said the two active groupings on the global stage are convening, each possessing enormous geographic, demographic, and strategic strengths, which qualify them to be influential players and undertake important roles amidst the accelerating global economic transformations.
"The GCC was ASEAN's 7th largest trading partner in 2023, with a total trade volume of 130.7 billion U.S. dollars. We anticipate this to grow by 30 percent, reaching 180 billion U.S. dollars by 2032. The investment potential between both sides is vast," said the crown prince, whose nation holds the current rotating presidency of the GCC.
"We therefore emphasize the importance of continuing to strengthen cooperation in economic, trade, investment, and technical fields. We look forward to achieving positive outcomes in the ongoing negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA) between both sides, which will boost investment opportunities and support regional supply chains," he added.
The summit brings together member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which first met in this format in Saudi Arabia's capital Riyadh in 2023.
During the first summit, leaders of ASEAN and GCC countries adopted a joint statement to lay the foundation to upgrade and develop their partnership, and welcomed the ASEAN-GCC Framework of Cooperation (2024-2028), which outlines measures and cooperation activities to be jointly undertaken.
These include specific targets in fields such as food security, renewable energy, innovation, adaptation to climate change, and combating terrorism and violent extremism.

Whether the timing of PMX's latest overseas trip is a coincidence or otherwise was questioned by a commenter to the NST's ex-journo FB post who pointed out that the 'same thing happened when the new AG was roped in and Zahid got his freedom'. Recall that PMX was in Jakarta from Sept 5-7, 2023 to attend the 43rd ASEAN Summit which was the day after the Kuala Lumpur High Court accorded a discharged not amounting to acquittal (DNAA) to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (Sept 4, 2023). The DNAA collectively 'cleared' the UMNO president from all 47 charges of criminal breach of trust (CBT), corruption and money laundering in relation to the Yayasan Akalbudi funds. Justice Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah made the ruling after allowing Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar's application to DNAA Ahmad Zahid after the prosecution decided to halt the case as they wanted to investigate the case more in depth. On Nov 11 last year when Dasuki was made the Attorney-General, PMX was not in town having earlier embarked on a four-day official visit to Cairo from Nov 9-12 at the invitation of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. EFTA countries sign trade agreement with Malaysia in Norway
OSLO, June 30 (Xinhua) -- Norway and other European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries signed a new economic partnership agreement with Malaysia during the EFTA ministerial meeting held last week in Tromso, northern Norway. This marked a significant step toward expanding trade and strengthening international cooperation amid growing global trade challenges, the Norwegian government said in a statement on Monday. "Malaysia is a rapidly growing market, and this agreement will strengthen Norwegian businesses in competition with businesses from other countries looking to enter this market," said Norway's Minister of Trade and Industry Cecilie Myrseth. The agreement, signed by representatives from Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and Malaysia, is expected to substantially lower trade barriers. According to the Norwegian government, 99 percent of Norwegian exports to Malaysia will become duty-free under the agreement, with most tariff reductions to be implemented within ten years. "In challenging times, rules-based trade is especially important," Myrseth said, highlighting the value of maintaining predictable and fair trade frameworks. Currently, trade between Norway and Malaysia remains modest, with bilateral trade in goods totaling approximately 7.1 billion Norwegian kroner (700 million U.S. dollars) in 2023. The new agreement also paves the way for Norwegian companies to participate in Malaysia's public procurement market under equal conditions with local businesses. The agreement also facilitates educational cooperation. Two MoUs were signed between Norwegian and Malaysian universities. These MoUs will promote joint research, academic exchanges, and collaboration on curriculum development. The EFTA is the intergovernmental organization of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. It was set up in 1960 for the promotion of free trade and economic integration between its members.
