Teenage girl dies in crash with HGV near Bathgate
The 20-year-old male driver of the Volkswagen Polo and an 18-year-old female passenger were taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh with serious injuries.
The 17-year-old female's next of kin have been informed and formal identification has taken place.
The circumstances surrounding the incident have been referred to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner.

Glass and debris was spread across the road after a HGV lorry crashed in Edinburgh. A HGV lorry has crashed on a busy Edinburgh road after it mounted the pavement. Today (Monday June 30), a lorry appeared to veer off the city's Maybury Road at around 10.30am in a horror crash. Images from the scene show the white lorry with a smashed windscreen and a dent in the driver side door as well as damage to the front bumper, reports Edinburgh Live. Glass and debris can also be seen strewn across the pavement following the incident which took place right next to a bus stop. A Lothian double decker bus can also be seen at the side of the road. It is understood emergency services have responded to the incident, but traffic is able to pass on either side. It is unknown if there are any reports of injuries. Earlier this month, in a separate incident, we reported that a man was arrested following a fatal crash between a car and a lorry that killed a teenage girl in Bathgate. Mercy crews raced to the scene on the Boghead Roundabout after the horror smash involving a Volkswagen Polo and an HGV on Monday, June 9, at around 11:50pm. Tragically a 17-year-old female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. She was later named locally as Ellie Douglas, an aspiring hairdresser. An 18-year-old female passenger was also taken to Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment. Police then confirmed on June 16 that they had arrested a 20-year-old man who has now been released pending further enquiries. The circumstances surrounding the incident have been referred to the police watchdog. Tributes poured in for Ellie was described as a"beautiful soul". A GoFundMe was set up to help the family with funeral costs. It said: "Ellie was a beautiful soul who lit up every room with her humour and warmth. She was a wee gem at our quiz nights and always brough t joy to those around her. "She had just completed her Level 5 in hairdressing and was full of excitement to begin her career." Tia Thomson said: "You were loved by everyone. Fly high, my girl, thinking of you always." Caerphilly dangerous driver rammed police cars before crash
Niall Bright, 28, from Abercarn, Caerphilly led officers on the pursuit from Whitchurch Road in Cardiff to the village of Bonvilston in the Vale of Glamorgan. The disqualified driver was at the wheel of a Volkswagen Polo when he was spotted at 3am in the morning on Monday, May 19. Elin Morgan, prosecuting, told Cardiff Crown Court that Bright drove through a stinger device before speeding at 70mph in a 30mph zone. He also ignored a red light and travelled on the wrong side of the road 'coming close to other vehicles'. Following his collision and arrest 'a female passenger travelling with him was described as being shaken and unable to speak'. Four police cars were involved in boxing Bright in with one of the officers he rammed suffering an injured shoulder. The defendant refused to give the police a specimen of blood. 'There was a blatant disregard for the rules of the road,' Miss Morgan added. 'Two of the police cars were damaged.' Bright, of no fixed abode, admitted dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, two counts of assaulting an emergency worker, failing to provide a specimen for analysis, possession of amphetamine and driving with no insurance. These offences put him in breach of a suspended prison sentence that was imposed on April 4, 2024 for dangerous driving and driving while disqualified. The defendant has previous convictions for dangerous driving in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2020, 2021 and 2023. In total, he has 14 previous convictions for 35 offences. Kevin Seal for Bright said his client's mother had suffered a stroke at the time of his offending. His barrister said: 'He entered guilty pleas at the first opportunity and he bitterly regrets his actions.' Judge Richard Kember told Bright: 'The manner of your driving attracted the attention of the police and a stinger was deployed.' He jailed the defendant for 26 months and told him he would serve half of that sentence in custody before being released on licence. The defendant will be banned from driving for five years and he will have to sit an extended retest. He must also pay a statutory victim surcharge.
