Social media influencer lands in soup for painting Lord Jagannath on turtle shell
In a formal complaint submitted to the principal chief conservator of forests (Wildlife) and the chief wildlife warden of Odisha, general secretary of Snake Helpline Subhendu Mallik accused social media influencer Ashish Meher of Bijepur of hunting an Indian Flap Shell Turtle, a Schedule-I species protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
A video, which has been widely circulated on social media, shows Meher forcibly handling the turtle, painting its back with synthetic colours to depict Lord Jagannath, carrying the reptile on a bike, and eventually releasing it into a water body without removing the paint.
'This act is not only a clear violation of section 9 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, but also breaches the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. Moreover, since turtles are considered divine incarnation in Hindu belief, painting an image of Lord Jagannath on its shell in this manner and leaving it back in the river is disrespectful and deeply hurts religious sentiments,' said Mallik.
The complaint called for Meher's immediate arrest, citing an earlier directive issued by the chief wildlife warden to take strict action against such offences.
While wildlife activists said such videos may encourage others to commit similar acts for social media attention, the influencer with over 10,000 followers on Facebook has removed the video following the controversy.

UP ATS seeks custody of Chhangur Baba, Jamaluddin in money laundering activities
The Uttar Pradesh anti-terrorism squad (ATS) has filed a fresh application seeking police custody remand (PCR) of Jalaluddin Shah alias Chhangur Baba, 78, and his key associate Naveen Rohra alias Jamaluddin, 45, in connection with an alleged religious conversion and money laundering racket in Balrampur, officials confirmed on Saturday. According to the official, Chhangur Baba is the alleged mastermind of the racket, accused of targeting Hindu girls across Balrampur and other districts. The gang allegedly received over ₹100 crore in foreign funding over the past three years. The official further stated that Naveen Rohra played a crucial role in the operations, allegedly participating in conversion activities and financial transactions. His wife, Neetu, was also allegedly involved in executing the activities. The ATS began investigating the racket after an FIR was registered on November 16, 2024. The Enforcement Directorate took up a parallel probe on July 8, 2025, to examine financial transactions and assets. Chhangur Baba and Neetu were arrested on July 5. Earlier, Mehboob, 45, son of Chhangur Baba, and Naveen were held on April 8, 2025. Rashid Shah, 40, from Utraula in Balrampur, was arrested on July 17, followed by the arrests of Sabroz and Sahabuddin on July 18. Two other accused, Ramzan and Idul Islam, are still absconding. In a related development, a court clerk, Rajesh Kumar Upadhyaya, was arrested on July 19 for alleged connivance. Upadhyaya was the first person to be arrested despite his name not appearing in the accused column of the FIR.

‘Ayodhya Ram Mandir' exhibition shut down after objections from Hindu organisations
Following a string of controversies surrounding it, the 'Ayodhya Ram Mandir', model featuring in a commercial exhibition on the Beach Road has been shut down in the city on Saturday (July 26). The scheduled event of 'Sree Seetha Rama Kalyanam' on July 29 was also reportedly called off after serious objections from the members of the Sadhu Parishad and Hindu organisations. It may be remembered that the controversy began when the exhibition organisers reportedly announced plans to conduct 'Sree Seetha Rama Kalyanam' on July 29, charging around ₹3,000 a ticket for a couple. They also allegedly claimed that priests from Bhadrachalam would be participating in the event. In response to their advertisement, the Bhadrachalam Devasthanam responded to the unauthorised use of their name and stated that they are not attending any such event. A formal complaint was submitted to the Endowments Department, which in turn approached the local police. Subsequently, the III Town Police served notices on the organisers. A few days ago, Andhra Pradesh Sadhu Parishad members inspected the model and raised serious objections about the commercialisation of the temple. They strongly objected at collection of ₹50 entry fees and additional charges for prasadams, stalls and sponsorships. They also condemned the plan to conduct a paid 'Sree Seetha Rama Kalyanam' and also warned to stage a protest if the management organises the Kalyanam, charging money.

Two prostitution rackets busted in UPs Kushinagar, 16 held
Kushinagar (UP), Jul 26 (PTI) Police have busted prostitution rackets with the arrest of 16 people, including 10 young women and six men, from two hotels here on Saturday, officials said. Superintendent of Police (SP) Santosh Kumar Mishra said that the arrestees were involved in 'immoral activities" in Hotel Pearl and Utsav Marriage Lawn. Police received information regarding the facilities and conducted a raid. They also deployed some police personnel to provide information regarding the ongoing activities. Following this, police arrested a total of 16 people, including 10 women, from both hotels. During interrogation, the arrestees revealed that Naveen Singh, who owns Hotel Pearl, and CPN Rao, owner of Utsav Marriage Lawn, would make such arrangements for their customers and charge them for it. Police said that Singh and Rao were running an organised network separately. While Singh has been arrested, Rao is currently absconding and will be arrested soon. Cases have been registered in Kasya Police Station under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act.
