Whitecaps use late goal to defeat Valour FC, advance to Canadian Championship semis

VANCOUVER - Defender Bjorn Utvik chose an opportune time to score his first-ever goal for the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Utvik headed in a shot in the 90th minute to give the Whitecaps a 2-1 victory over Valour FC to win their Telus Canadian Championship quarterfinal series Wednesday night.
The game's three goals came in the final four minutes of regulation time.
Forward Emmanuel Sabbi, a second-half substitute, gave Vancouver a 1-0 lead in the 79th minute with a shot from the top of the box. He celebrated by doing backflips. Defender Ranko Veselinovic assisted on the play.
Valour, a Canadian Premier League side from Winnipeg, tied the match in the 86th minute when Jevontae Layne's header off a corner kick snuck into the net.
Utvik, playing in his second season with Vancouver, won the match when forward Jayden Nelson looped a shot into the box. Utvik went high into the air and directed it past goaltender Eleias Himaras, bringing a roar from the crowd of 14,536 at BC Place Stadium.
Vancouver will face Hamilton's Forge in a two-match semifinal with the opening game in August.
The Whitecaps, who play in Major League Soccer, are seeking their fourth consecutive Canadian Championship.
Vancouver and Valour tied 2-2 back on May 20 in Winnipeg during the opening of the two-match aggregate series.
The Whitecaps dominated play most of the game, swarming Valour's net.
Forward Daniel Rios had a good scoring chance in the 10th minute, blasting a shot from distance that just went wide of the Valour net. Forward Brian White, an MLS All-Star returning to the Whitecaps from international duty with the United States at the CONCACAF Gold Cup, let go of a left-footed shot in the 20th minute that just skimmed over the top of the Valour net.
Valour did threaten in the 17th minute when midfielder Raphael Ohin took the ball deep into Vancouver territory, then sent a cross in front of the net. Goalkeeper Isaac Boehmer dove out of his goal to clear the ball.
Rios had another golden chance in the 57 minute, sending a shot just wide of an open corner.
Nelson made a pretty, spinning move in the 60th minute to elude two defenders, but his shot went wide. He had another good shot in the 67th minute which was blocked by Himaras.
Midfielder Sebastian Berhalter, another MLS All-Star who played for the U.S. at the Gold Cup, tipped a header in the 76th minute that Himaras got a hand on.
Earlier Wednesday Hamilton defeated FC Montreal 3-2 in another quarter-final match. That left Vancouver the only MLS team left in the competition.
The other semifinal will feature Athletico Ottawa against Vancouver FC in a battled of CPL teams.
The Whitecaps came into the match 2-3-0 in their last five MLS games. Vancouver is second in the MLS Western Conference with a 11-4-5 record and fifth overall in league standings.
Valour (2-8-2) are seventh in the CPL and came into the match with three straight losses.
Valour earned its way into the quarterfinals with a 1-0 victory over semi-professional side TSS Rovers in the preliminary round. As defending champions, the Whitecaps had a bye through the tournament's first round.
UP NEXT:
The Whitecaps head out on the road for MLS games against Colorado Saturday then play in Houston July 16 and San Diego July 19.

Season series: Guardians lead 4-2 The Guardians snapped a 4-game winning streak with a 4-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles Thursday. OF Steven Kwan left the yard twice to give him 8 homers on the year. 3B Jose Ramirez is hitting .333 with 3 homers and 6 RBIs the last 7 days and has 8 homers and 18 RBIs this month. The Royals are 3-3 out of the All-Star break and had Thursday off after taking 2 of 3 at the Chicago Cubs. Guardians at Royals picks and predictions Guardians 4, Royals 3 Moneyline The Guardians are the same team at home as on the road. They're 25-25 at home and 26-26 on the road. They're also 17-9 inside the division. Wacha has a career-low 6.8 K/9, and I like the upside for the GUARDIANS (-105) here. If Williams can keep his walks in check, they should cruise. Run line/Against the spread Give me GAVIN WILLIAMS OVER 4.5 STRIKEOUTS (-140). He has 11, 5 and 8 K's in his last 3 GS and 5+ K's in 4 of his last 5 starts against K.C. Over/Under It's slated to be 83 degrees with wind going all over the place. There's also a 40% chance of rain. Kauffman is a big park, and neither team has a great offense (CLE 26th at 3.9 R/game; K.C. 29th at 3.5 R/game). I'll LEAN UNDER 8 (-105). Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win! Play now! Eovaldi pitches 5 scoreless innings as Rangers beat Braves 8-3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Nathan Eovaldi pitched three-hit ball over five scoreless innings in his first start since the All-Star break and the Texas Rangers beat the Atlanta Braves 8-3 on Friday night. Eovaldi (8-3) threw 53 of his 86 pitches for strikes as Texas won its fourth straight and handed Atlanta a third straight loss. He struck out seven but walked a season-high four. It was also Eovaldi's first start since the Rangers paid him a $100,000 All-Star Game bonus even though the 35-year-old wasn't selected despite a 7-3 record and a 1.58 ERA. He missed his first start after the break — a matchup with AL All-Star starter Tarik Skubal and the Tigers — with back tightness. Sam Haggerty singled leading off the first against Joey Wentz (2-2) before stealing his 10th base and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Marcus Semien for a 1-0 lead. Jonah Heim hit his ninth home run — a two-out shot in the second for a 2-0 lead. Wyatt Langford had a two-out RBI double in the fourth and Sam Haggerty doubled in a run in the fifth for a 4-0 advantage. Three singles, two walks, a hit batter and a sac fly led to four runs in the eighth. Michael Harris II hit his eighth home run — a leadoff shot off Jacob Latz in the seventh to cut it to 4-1. Austin Riley went 0 for 4 in his first game for Atlanta since suffering an abdominal strain on July 11. Key moment Texas had allowed two runs or fewer in a club-record-tying seven straight games until Caleb Boushley surrendered two in the ninth to end the run. Key stat Seager is the only player to have an on-base streak of 24-plus games in each of the last three seasons. Up next ___
