Pedro Pascal says 'bullies make me sick' as he defends JK Rowling criticism

Metro5 days ago

Pedro Pascal has doubled down on his criticism of JK Rowling weeks after he accused her of 'heinous loser behaviour'.
The Last Of Us star directly blasted the Harry Potter author, 59, in April after she celebrated the Supreme Court ruling on the definition of women, which could exclude trans women from single-sex spaces.
It has been reported that Rowling donated £70k of her own money to the Scottish campaigners behind the Supreme Court appeal, which has faced widespread protest from trans rights activists and anger from high-profile figures such as Nicola Coughlan.
Pascal, who has a transgender sister Lux, has long been a vocal trans ally such as wearing t-shirts that say 'protect the dolls' on the red carpet.
After sharing a video on Instagram calling Rowling out and encouraging people to boycott future Harry Potter projects, the 50-year-old Hollywood star wrote: 'Awful disgusting S*** is exactly right. Heinous LOSER behavior.'
He appears to have no regrets over the comments, however, as he reflected on the backlash and his decision to publicly slam Rowling in a new interview with Vanity Fair.
The Mandalorian actor admitted that at first, after seeing the widespread reaction, he felt like 'that kid that got sent to the principal's office a lot for behavioural issues in public schools in Texas feeling scared and thinking, What'd I do?'.
However, he added: 'The one thing that I would say I agonised over a little bit was just, 'Am I helping? Am I f**king helping?'.
'It's a situation that deserves the utmost elegance so that something can actually happen, and people will actually be protected. Listen, I want to protect the people I love. But it goes beyond that. Bullies make me f**king sick.'
His older sister, Javiera Balmaceda, also made her support for her brother clear.
'It is heinous loser behaviour. And he said that as the older brother to someone saying that our little sister doesn't exist,' she explained to the publication.
There has been mounting criticism of Rowling's attitudes towards the transgender community, the latest of which comes from Sir Stephen Fry who has previously defended the author.
In a change of stance, he recently claimed at a live event that she had been 'radicalised' by TERFs (trans-exclusionary radical feminists) and the 'vitriol that has been thrown at her'.
'It is unhelpful and only hardens her and will only continue to harden her, I am afraid.' He added that she is a 'lost cause for us'.
'I am not saying that she should not be called out when she says things that are really cruel, wrong and mocking.'
Pascal himself has been lumped in the same category as David Tennant who has also spoken up for trans rights. More Trending
During the British LGBT Awards he called out Kemi Badenoch and uplifted the trans community, later calling anti-trans groups 'a tiny bunch of little whinging f****** [that] are on the wrong side of history and they'll all go away soon.'
Rowling specifically called the Doctor Who star out on social medai for his comments, later poking fun at him when Badenoch became leader of the Conservative Party.
Asked about his thoughts on Rowling's public attack on him during ITV show The Assembly, he said: 'Listen, JK Rowling is a wonderful author who has created brilliant stories and I wish her no ill will but I hope that we can all, as a society, just let people be. Just get out of people's way.'

Ewen Bremner credits reborn cinema for his career in acting

He recalled visiting the art house cinema for the first time as a teenager and being blown away by the Wim Wenders' romantic fantasy Wings of Desire. Read more: Bremner admitted he feared the Filmhouse - which reopened at the weekend nearly three years after a financial crisis led to its sudden closure - had been lost forever. He and his daughter, Harmony Rose-Bremner, who is pursuing her own acting career, both spoke at a launch event for the Filmhouse, which has been brought back to life largely thanks to a £1.5m lifeline from the UK Government. Ewan McGregor and Ewen Bremner starred in T2 Trainspotting. The pair were among the many stars who back a long-running campaign to reopen the former church, which was turned into the Filmhouse in 1979. Others included Brian Cox, Alan Cumming, Jack Lowden, Emma Thompson, Dougray Scott, Kate Dickie and Timothy Spall. Harmony-Rose Remner. (Image: Supplied) Actor Denis Lawson also spoke at the new-look Filmhouse on Sunday to introduce a special screening of writer and director Bill Forsyth's classic Scottish comedy Local Hero. A group of former staff, led by former chief executive Ginnie Atkinson, led a rescue bid to bring the Filmhouse back to life. Actor Ewen Bremner was one of the actors who backed the campaign to bring Edinburgh's Filmhouse cinema back from the dead. Although the Lothian Road building went onto the open market, new owners Caledonian Heritable, who own a number of bars and restaurants in the city, agreed a long-term lease with a new Filmhouse charity which has allowed them to refurbish and reopen the cinema. Ewen Bremner said: 'I'm delighted to be here and so grateful for the fight that Ginnie and her team fought to bring this cinema back from what we all felt was the end of an era. 'It didn't seem like there was really a chance that that this amazing asset to the city could survive the crisis it had gone through and find a future. 'I have benefited an unmentionable from my experiences in this building from when I first saw Wings of Desire here. I must have been about 16. It just blew my mind. 'There are so many films I have seen here that only come to the Filmhouse. They don't come to mainstream cinemas. 'The programme that the Filmhouse provides is just kaleidoscopic. There are so many films shown every month that you can absorb here. There's nothing like it. 'That's been a big part of my education as someone who didn't train as an actor. It was a massive resource to me and I appreciate it to so much.' Harmony Rose-Bremner said: 'The Filmhouse really has been a big part of my education of cinema, the expanding of my horizons of what film could be and delving into completely new worlds. 'The cinema is a place where you go to escape. After the pandemic, with the rise of streamers, everything has become smaller and smaller. I know people who watch whole films on their phones now. 'But it really feels like you can't be transported to another world if you are only looking into a tiny screen. 'Places like this are so important for future generations so that it doesn't become the norm to just be on your phone. 'This place has been monumental in my education as an actor. I am so happy to see it reopened.'

Jeff Bezos & wife Lauren jet off for expensive honeymoon at White Lotus location

Newlyweds Lauren Sanchez and Jeff Bezos leave their luxury wedding to embark on a multi-million dollar honeymoon at a famous hotel featured on The White Lotus season two Lauren Sanchez and Jeff Bezos are rumoured to set sail on a luxury trip for their honeymoon after they tied the knot last week in a three-day multi-million dollar wedding celebration in Venice. The billionaire couple haven't publicly confirmed where they are going for their honeymoon, but a source has claimed they will stay in the area of Torcello before heading to Nicelli airport. The newlyweds are said to fly in a helicopter back to Bezos' $500 million superyacht, 'Koru,' where they will move on to Taormina in Sicily. ‌ The Daily Mail have reported that the couple fell in love with the town last year when they sailed along Sicily's coast and the Aeolian Islands. It is reported that Jeff and Lauren will anchor in Taormina and spend some time together at Four Seasons San Domenico Palace. ‌ The magnificent hotel is famous for being the primary location of The White Lotus season 2 and a suite can cost upwards of €7,000 a night. The hotel website states: 'Perched on a rocky promontory high above the Ionian Sea, San Domenico Palace, an exclusive five-star luxury hotel in Taormina, invites you to experience the charm of a reimagined 14th-century Sicilian convent.' Before setting off, the newlyweds were snapped beaming and waving goodbye as they left the Aman Venice hotel by boat on Sunday. Lauren cut a smart figure in a white dress with an elegant drape. She finished the look with a black hat and some stylish oversized sunglasses. Hubby Jeff looked just as smart in a navy t-shirt and sunglasses. On 27 June, the couple exchanged vows at the stunning San Giorgio Maggiore island, set against Venice's iconic lagoon. The ceremony unfolded in a black‑tie garden event—Lauren arrived in a cream Dior suit before switching into a custom Dolce & Gabbana lace gown, inspired by Sophia Loren and crafted over 900 hours. Around 200 high‑profile guests arrived by water taxi to witness the nuptials, including Oprah Winfrey, Kim & Kylie Jenner, Leonardo DiCaprio, Bill Gates, Tom Brady, Usher and Orlando Bloom. ‌ Shortly after the wedding, Lauren changed her Instagram handle to @laurensanchezbezos, confirming the newlyweds' joy to the world. The couple took three days out of their busy schedule to celebrate their wedding, which is believed to have cost close to £40million. And while the happy couple and their guests enjoyed the celebrations which went without a hitch, it seems not everybody was pleased that the retail giant had booked out the entire Italian city. An estimated 700 demonstrators gathered together at Santa Lucia train station armed with banners that read "If you can rent Venice for your wedding, you can pay more tax." The demonstration is believed to have been organised by the No Space For Bezos group. A few members of the group were seen laden with Amazon boxes that had the words "ordered, shipped, delivered, rejected" written on them.
