Slew of measures soon at RMLIMS for better patient care, says director

To streamline services amid rising patient footfall, Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) will roll out a range of new measures, including the expansion of emergency wards, the launch of a green OPD, a new registration hall, and other upgraded facilities, according to professor CM Singh, the director of the institute. RMLIMS director professor CM Singh. (Sourced) He pointed out that the patient footfall at RMLIMS is around 4,000 per day, while emergency witnesses over 550 patients on a daily basis. 'With the recruitment of 166 faculties, RMLIMS has taken every care to provide smooth services to patients. To deal with the rush, several important steps have been taken and other initiatives are in store,' professor Singh said. While 47 beds are operational in the emergency area at present, 45 more will be added for smooth functioning and better patient care, he added. Green OPD: Green OPD will be launched soon in the emergency premises. Patients will be segregated in serious and non-serious categories to avoid unnecessary occupation of beds in the emergency unit. Patients with non-serious health issues will be sent for consultation at the green OPD. More medicine counters: To facilitate patients in the new registration hall, four more counters will come up soon for the convenience of patients and to ease load on the five already operational counters. Besides, counters for Ayushman Bharat and Deen Dayal Upadhyay schemes will be shifted from the new registration hall to a triple-storey building beside Lohia Police Chowki, professor Singh said. Additional beds at neuroscience centre: The number of beds at the neuroscience centre in the old block has been increased to 90. Earlier, there were only 24 beds. This wing is likely to be inaugurated by chief minister Yogi Adityanath, the RMLIMS director said. New control room: To tackle complaints like dirty toilets in the wards, negligence by nursing officers, doctors not visiting wards, etc, a new centralised control room has been set up beside the emergency area, which is operational round the clock. Doctors, nursing staff, hospital administration officers and technicians are deployed in shifts, and the complaints are resolved within 15-20 minutes, prof Singh said. QR codes for redressal: A QR code has been fixed at each bed in every ward of the hospital, which will enable patients and their attendants to raise complaints against the doctors as well other staff of the hospital in case of negligence. The hospital administration will resolve the issue within half an hour. The chief medical superintendent and medical superintendent will review the complaints everyday, the RMLIMS director said. More facilities in store: Prof CM Singh said that a rural health training centre will be inaugurated in Juggaur area near Indira Canal. The centre has been constructed at the cost of ₹366.67 lakh. Other facilities include a foot overbridge to connect the main campus and academic block, developed at the cost of ₹456.50 lakh. There will also be a multipurpose hall, lecture theatre and cafeteria on the 10th floor of the academic block -- developed at the cost of ₹1022.63 lakh, he explained. Moreover, separate hostels for boys and girls, constructed near the Ekana stadium at the cost of ₹11486.77 lakh, educational institute for nursing college, and a Gamma Knife (primarily used for non-invasive, stereotactic radiosurgery, specifically targeting brain and upper spine conditions), installed at the cost of ₹4,400 lakh, will also be inaugurated soon, the RMLIMS director said.

Physical medicine rehab centre to come up at AIIMS Maidangarhi

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi is set to start a centre of excellence for Physical Medicine Rehabilitation (PMR) at its Maidangarhi campus, which has come up in collaboration with the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). Currently, the main campus of AIIMS Delhi operates a PMR centre. The upcoming centre will provide specialised care and rehabilitation facilities to patients dealing with orthopedic issues, spinal injuries, and amputation, among others. According to officials, under the project, mental health and trauma centres will also be set up at the Maidangarhi campus. Dr Sanjeev Lalwani, Chief of Central Armed Police Forces Institute of Medical Sciences (CAPFIMS), said, 'The centre will provide artificial limb assessment and fitting, occupational rehabilitation as well as recuperation post sports-related injuries.' Currently, the Maidangarhi campus offers 970 beds. Dr Lalwani said 70 to 80 beds will be added to the PMR centre. A doctor from the PMR department said, 'The new centre was very much needed, taking into account the huge patient load and the long waiting list we usually have.' The doctor added that the department mostly caters to patients who have developed spinal injuries or are dealing with paralysis. However, work on the PMR centre is yet to begin. A senior official said a road has to be constructed to facilitate the movement of ambulances and other vehicles to the Maidangarhi campus. The Supreme Court has recently pulled up the Delhi Development Authority for felling trees to build a road to the CAPFIMS, Maidangarhi. 'Once the matter is resolved, work will start,' an official said.

PMR Day 2025 – Telangana Must Prioritise Early Neuro-Rehabilitation Within the Golden Window

As Telangana observes PMR Day, healthcare experts across the state are urging a fundamental shift in how recovery is managed after critical neurological events. From strokes to spinal cord injuries to traumatic brain injuries, the future of care must go beyond survival and focus on restoring quality of life—quickly, clinically, and completely. While stroke remains the second leading cause of death in India, it is now increasingly affecting adults in their 30s and 40s across Telangana. Districts like Hyderabad, Warangal, and Karimnagar are seeing a rise in cases triggered by hypertension, sedentary lifestyles, and undiagnosed chronic conditions. Despite improvements in emergency care and awareness, most patients are discharged without a recovery plan, especially in smaller towns. 'In most cases across Telangana, stroke survivors are sent home with general exercise advice and little direction,' says Dr. Aastik Bhatt, Physiatrist and PMR Consultant at HCAH Somajiguda. 'But the reality is, neuro-rehabilitation must begin as early as the first 72 hours after stabilisation. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) is a specialised medical discipline that drives the fastest and most functional recovery—not just physically, but cognitively, emotionally, and socially. At HCAH, our focus is not just on moving limbs—it's about helping people return to meaningful, independent living.' At HCAH's neuro-rehabilitation centres in Hyderabad, all recovery services are delivered under one roof. PMR doctors work closely with physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, speech therapists, and rehab nurses to ensure that every patient receives a seamless, personalised, and measurable recovery plan. 'We're seeing more young patients—some in their late twenties—who could recover fully with early, structured rehab,' adds Dr. Shiva, Consultant in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at HCAH Gachibowli. 'But recovery is not automatic. The brain and body must be actively guided through a process of neuro-restoration, especially within the golden window. PMR ensures that recovery is not left to trial and error—but designed and delivered with precision.' Despite growing need, access to high-quality neuro-rehabilitation remains limited outside major metro zones. To bridge this, HCAH (HealthCare atHOME) has built India's most advanced post-acute recovery network. With centres across Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Kolkata, HCAH is among the only healthcare providers in the country offering end-to-end neuro-rehabilitation with structured protocols and robotic therapies designed for fastest recovery. 'Neuro-rehabilitation is not a luxury—it's a clinical necessity,' says Dr. Gaurav Thukral, Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer, HCAH. 'Patients who begin inpatient rehab within the golden window—especially the first 90 days—have far better outcomes. At HCAH, over 92 percent of such patients regain functional independence within three months. We've invested in high-end robotics, gamified therapy tools, cognitive labs, and milestone-based tracking to ensure that recovery is accelerated, personalised, and complete. Our goal isn't just to extend life—it's to restore the life people had before injury or stroke.' To honour PMR Day and strengthen its commitment to community health, HCAH's Hyderabad centre also hosted a blood donation camp, with participation from patient families, healthcare professionals, and local volunteers. The initiative was designed to promote the ethos of recovery and giving back. As the burden of stroke and neurotrauma grows across Telangana, public health leaders are being urged to act swiftly. Recommendations include: Establishing PMR-led neuro-rehabilitation centres in Tier 2 and Tier 3 districts Embedding early rehab pathways into non-communicable disease (NCD) programs Training GPs and frontline health workers to refer patients within the golden window On PMR Day, Telangana's medical community shares a unified message:The first 72 hours and the following 90 days are not just recovery time—they are decision points for a person's future. What we do in that window defines whether a life is stalled or rebuilt.
