After a spirited rebound, markets fall for third straight day
On Tuesday, the Nifty 50 index fell 1.05% or 261.55 points to 24,683.9, while the Sensex 30 slipped 1.06%, its sharpest decline in five days, to end at 81,186.44.
The market had rallied almost 5% from 24,008 on Friday (9 May), a day before the ceasefire, to a high of 25,116.25 on 15 May. From there, Nifty has fallen 0.08% and Sensex has declined 0.15% on profit booking.
All the Nifty sectoral indices ended lower on Tuesday. The Nifty Auto index fell the most, closing 2.17% down, the India Consumption index dropped 1.77%, and the Nifty Financial Services index closed 1.73% lower. The Nifty Midcap 100 index settled 1.62% lower.
The market sentiment remained negative on Tuesday, with 42 of 50 Nifty constituents ending in the red. The BSE market capitalisation fell by ₹ 5.4 trillion to reach ₹ 43.82 trillion.
Of the 2,969 stocks traded on the NSE, 1974 declined and 915 advanced.
Fund managers said that much of the negatives, including geopolitical tensions and global tariff uncertainties and earnings disappointments, were priced in. But with Moody's downgrading the US, a selloff in emerging market assets by foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) amid rising US bond yields could crimp the short-term sentiment.
'When US bond yields go up, it's always negative for India and for emerging markets because the cost of debt is moving up,' said Christy Mathai, fund manager-equity at Quantum Asset Management Co. In such cases, investors could be better off investing in local currency and local bonds as opposed to investing in emerging markets, he said.
Sachin Relekar, senior equity fund manager at Axis Mutual Fund, said, 'We believe that macro headwinds are receding.' The recent geopolitical issue with 'our neighbouring country seems to be behind us', he said. There were concerns around trade and tariffs, which were steep when proposed, but the tone of negotiations—especially with China and potentially with India too—now seems more positive, he said.
'We still need to see the final details, but it doesn't look as bad as it did around before and, hence, we believe that the two issues are less of a concern going forward,' Relekar said.
Most of the earnings downgrades that had to happen have happened and there is not much room for the earnings to go down further, according to Mathai. The earnings season for Q4FY25 has not been that weak and was on the expected lines, he said. 'From hereon, we might see an 11% earnings growth for FY25-26.'
FIIs have been net buyers in Indian equity markets for the last five days with inflows of ₹ 15,262 crore.
Asian indices closed higher with Hong Kong's Hang Seng ending 1.49% up and Japan's Nikkei 225 settling 0.8% above the previous close.

Parliament Set For Stormy Monsoon Session As Centre Shows Willingness To Debate Key National Issues
During the business advisory committee (BAC) meetings in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, it was indicated that the weekly agenda will be finalised by the respective chairpersons. While the government is eager to move forward with legislative business, including the introduction and discussion of key bills, the opposition has made it clear that it wants direct responses from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on several pressing matters. Among these, likely to dominate is the one on India's response to US President Donald Trump's remarks on trade and the need for a detailed discussion on the recently concluded Operation Sindoor, India's response to the Pahalgam terror attack. Several opposition parties had earlier demanded a special session of Parliament for this, but were told that the monsoon session will serve as the appropriate platform for such a debate. Sunday's meeting of the INDIA bloc served as a curtain raiser, showcasing the opposition front's resolve to corner the government on issues ranging from foreign policy to national security and economic performance. On its part, the ruling BJP is not taking any chances. In addition to fine-tuning its legislative strategy, it is working closely with its NDA allies to ensure cohesion and maximise floor coordination. The sources said in the coming days, a series of internal briefings will be held where senior ministers will interact with NDA MPs, equipping them with talking points and data, particularly on matters relating to defence, foreign affairs, and trade. Amid the expected acrimony and sharp exchanges between the government and opposition, one issue that may see rare consensus across the political spectrum is the impeachment of Justice Yashwant Varma. Forward movement on this front is likely in the coming weeks, the sources said.

ET Analysis: India counters China's fertilizer export freeze with diplomatic push
Fertilizer shortage has been a war of a different kind with China in which India seems to have finally worked itself out of a hole through a major diplomatic effort. China's decision to stop fertilizer exports to India will go down as among the harshest forms of supply chain weaponisation by Beijing. It was a provocative move not only because it was timed with the onset of the Kharif season, resulting in major shortage of DAP (Diammonium Phosphate) across states, but also because it forced a crisis on India just when it had launched Operation Sindoor on Pakistan. It's a red flag because India's military leadership has called out China's operational support to Pakistan. Two countries stood out as unlikely stars in this round of India's fight against China's supply chain pressures - Saudi Arabia and Morocco. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Knee Pain? Start Eating These Foods, and Feel Your Pain Go Away Undo So, here's the status ahead of the Rabi season, for which distribution is set to begin by month-end. India's DAP imports from China were a little over 22 lakh metric tonnes. India had to knock the doors of Saudi Arabia, the other big supplier for India. After some hectic diplomacy, both sides reached a deal. Saudi Arabia will bridge at least 10 lakh metric tonnes DAP based on a newly formalised long-term contract for over 31 lakh metric tonnes. Similarly, India could work out a deal with Morocco, which would cover 5 lakh metric tonnes, leaving about 7 lakh metric tonnes shortfall. While some of it is likely to be replenished from available domestic stocks, diplomatic efforts are on with Russia to increase its exports. Fertilizer is not under sanctions and, hence, may work for both countries. Live Events In the short term, government estimates suggest that it will have adequate supply in hand ahead of the Rabi season. More deals are in play as India is looking to diversify this supply chain to the extent possible, reaching out to Egypt, Nigeria, Togo, Mauritania and Tunisia. Back to the China problem. Beijing has been going slow on renewing or signing new fertilizer contracts with India since 2023. As a result, there was a steady increase in supply from Saudi Arabia because Indian companies had started to sense pressure. Costs, however, seemed to favour China. In May-June, Beijing unexpectedly and suddenly upped the ante on the fertilizer front. What it started doing was just stopped inspecting consignments headed for India. Indian agencies figured out that suppliers had been informally told that India-bound consignments will not be allowed to go. The signal was clear, raising alarm bells in New Delhi which had to get its act together, amid Operation Sindoor, to ensure this remains a one-season crisis and does not roll over, sparking off a domestic storm in its wake. For now, it appears, India may have managed - between Saudi Arabia, Morocco and, potentially, Russia - the immediate crisis, given that DAP is second most preferred/used fertilizer in India after urea. UNRELIABLE CHINA However, the crisis has underlined an urgent need to carefully map India's supply chain vulnerabilities with China across sectors. Because it's clear that China will continuously use its supply chain advantage as a political weapon to pressurize and bend India - worryingly, even in aid of Pakistan.
