Some silences weigh heavier than words. When Dishom Guru Shibu Soren passed away, it was not merely the end of a political life — it was as if a part of the land itself had gone quiet. For millions, he was not just a leader, but a walking memory of a movement, the weathered face of hope and dignity.
I remember a day at the Dumaria Mela in Littipara. Thousands had gathered under the open sky to see Guruji — then chief minister — speak. I had just begun learning Santali and greeted the crowd in hesitant, imperfect words. To my astonishment, Guruji paused the programme, walked across the dais, and acknowledged me before the crowd. It was not just encouragement — it was his way of saying that efforts to understand his people mattered.
That moment never left me. It taught me that in leadership, empathy is not a virtue — it is a necessity.
He spoke fiercely against the exploitation of tribal communities — his voice rising against moneylenders, against alcoholism, against anything that broke the spirit of his people. These were not rehearsed lines. They came from a life carved in loss and resistance. Once, in a quiet moment, he told me, "Adversities aren't curses; they are our oldest teachers."

That sentence alone explains the resolve that defined his journey — from a grieving son to a people's voice.
In 2010, Guruji was focused on whether ration reached the poorest, whether dignity was delivered with it. He was not chasing applause — he was chasing justice. He dreamt of welfare with astonishing foresight — he dreamt of 2025 in 2010. Even in his final years, I saw him walking through fields, never far from the earth. He believed that agriculture would one day reclaim Jharkhand's pride.

Trump's staffing gaps complicate India's bid to ease US tensions

Indian officials have struggled to engage with US President Donald Trump 's administration because key foreign policy roles in Washington remain unfilled, people familiar with the matter said, making it difficult for New Delhi to effectively push for a favorable trade deal. Several positions in the Department of State and the Department of Defense are vacant, which has made it harder for India to lobby its view, the people said, asking not to be identified to discuss a sensitive matter. Trump said Monday he'll increase the rate 'substantially' because of New Delhi's refusal to halt buying of Russian oil. The US says India, alongside China, is helping President Vladimir Putin fund his war against Ukraine with the oil purchases. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gold Is Surging in 2025 — Smart Traders Are Already In IC Markets Learn More Undo Also Read: US to 'substantially' raise tariff on India, says Trump New Delhi defended its position Monday, saying criticism from the US and European Union about the Asian nation's trade with Russia was 'unjustified and unreasonable.' It highlighted that the EU and US continue to buy energy and other materials from Russia when 'such trade is not even a national compulsion.' Live Events The steep tariff adds to already strained ties, with Trump repeatedly claiming he used trade as leverage to broker peace between India and rival Pakistan in May — an assertion New Delhi has strongly denied. One of the most critical vacancies is the Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs — a role that oversees US foreign policy and relations in the region. Although Indian-American academic Paul Kapur was nominated for the role by Trump, his appointment has yet to be confirmed. The post of US Ambassador to India — a key role in managing bilateral tensions — has remained vacant since January 2025, with career diplomats currently running the New Delhi embassy. Eric Garcetti , former President Joe Biden's representative to India, was confirmed only after a two-year delay, but strong personal ties between key officials on both sides helped bridge the gap at the time, the people said. The US Embassy in New Delhi didn't immediately respond to an email seeking further information. The sharp downsizing of the US National Security Council — from over 300 officials under Biden to around 50 under Trump's second term — has further compounded the challenges, the people added. The White House pushed out scores of NSC staffers in May as officials sought to transform the council into a smaller organization focused on implementing Trump's policies instead of helping to shape them.

Putin's alleged daughter Elizaveta Krivonogikh condemns Russian president, signals support for Ukraine

Elizaveta Krivonogikh , the 22-year-old woman widely believed to be the youngest daughter of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has posted critical messages online condemning the man she says 'destroyed' her life and was responsible for taking 'millions of lives.' Krivonogikh, now living in Paris, shared the remarks on a private Telegram channel named 'Art of Luiza,' a reference to her artistic pseudonym Luiza Rozova. In the post, she wrote, 'It's liberating to be able to show my face to the world again.' She added, 'It reminds me of who I am and who destroyed my life.' Her identity first emerged in a 2020 investigation by the Russian media outlet Proekt , which reported on her 'phenomenal resemblance' to Putin. She was born in 2003 to Svetlana Krivonogikh, a woman identified as a former housekeeper for Putin. While Putin is not named on her birth certificate, she was given the patronymic 'Vladimirovna,' meaning 'daughter of Vladimir.' Artist shifts toward anti-war message amid continued criticism Live Events Following initial media attention, Krivonogikh's lifestyle, documented on Instagram and characterized by luxury, was spotlighted by Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny in 2021. After Russia's invasion of Ukraine later that year, her public presence diminished, and her Instagram account was deactivated. She has since returned to the platform but initially withheld her identity in photos. Krivonogikh now appears to be distancing herself from her past, working at a Paris art gallery focused on anti-war pieces. She has also adopted a new pseudonym, Elizaveta Rudnova, reportedly referencing Oleg Rudnov, a deceased ally of President Putin. While she has been outspoken in her condemnation of the war in Ukraine, some critics question her authenticity and argue she should not be in positions where she may interact with Ukrainians. In response, Krivonogikh wrote, 'Am I really responsible for the activities of my family, who can't even hear me?' In earlier posts, she reflected on her former lifestyle, expressing disillusionment with the wealth and notoriety that came from her family connections. Her public statements now reflect a shift toward advocacy and personal independence. Reaffirmation of partnership that we are strengthening: Philippines' President Marcos on India visit

Philippines' President Ferdinand R Marcos Jr. on Tuesday said his visit to India is a reaffirmation of the bilateral partnership that "we are strengthening". In brief remarks on the sidelines of a ceremonial reception accorded to him at the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhavan complex here, he also asserted that Manila wants to build on the existing ties with New Delhi and explore "many opportunities" that have arisen in the past few years. "I think it's a reaffirmation of the alliance and the partnership that we are strengthening. We used to refer to the Asia Pacific region, we now refer to it as the Indo-Pacific region, which is, I think, a correct evolution of the understanding because of the global nature of all the politics, all the trade and all of the economy," the Philippine president said. Live Events "And I want to build upon what we already have, but certainly to explore many opportunities that have arisen in the past few years because of the new technologies and the changing state of the global economy and the geopolitics around us now," he said. Marcos arrived in India on August 4 on a five-day visit. He will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Modi later on Tuesday. His visit coincides with the 75th anniversary of India-Philippines diplomatic relations. The visit is an opportunity for both countries to set the path for future bilateral cooperation and to engage on regional and international issues of mutual interest, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.
