Curfew imposed in Assam town after recovery of severed cow head from temple triggers tension
Guwahati, June 9 (UNI) Curfew was imposed on Monday in Assam's Dhubri town, with the administration apprehending breach of peace and public tranquility amidst prevailing tension following the recovery of a severed cow head and beef from the premises of a temple.
The incident triggered widespread protests in the town, and the locals demanded immediate action against the culprits.
Although the police and senior district administration officials reached the spot in Ward no 3 immediately they faced resistance from the locals.
The local Hindu community also prevented the police from removing the banned substance from the temple until the culprits are arrested.
The people took to the streets and shouted slogans in protest. This is the third incident of recovery of beef from the same temple in recent times.
The District Commissioner, Dhubri, promulgated prohibitory orders under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Samhita 2023.
As per the prohibitory order, all shops and market establishments falling within the Dhubri Town area will remain closed until further notice.
The order also banned assembly of 5 (five) or more persons in any public places, streets and thoroughfares intending to hold demonstration/meeting/procession or anything similar in Dhubri town area.
"Organising any Rally/Procession/Meeting/Demonstration are strictly prohibited," the order said adding that only emergency services like Medical Establishment, Education institutions, SDRF, Fire and Emergency Services, Police, APDCL officials, Army and other Paramilitary forces and such other persons specifically permitted and in whose favour relaxation is granted either by the undersigned or by those who are authorized to issue relaxation of this order as deemed fit and proper.
Assam police had arrested 16 persons recently for illegal cattle slaughter and sale of beef on the occasion of Eid Ul Zuha .
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that cattle parts were found in five places including near Cotton University (Kamrup M), Dhubri, Hojai, and Sribhumi (Bagargool). Five illegal slaughter sites were uncovered – 3 in Cachar (Gumrah, Silchar, Lakhipur) and 2 in Karimganj (Badarpur, Banga).
16 arrests were made – 9 from Cachar and 7 from Sribhumi, Sarma posted on his X handle on Sunday and added that strict action will be taken against the violators.
Assam Cattle Preservation Act of 2021 banned cattle slaughter and sale of beef in areas where Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs are in the majority and within a five-km radius of a temple or satra (Vaishnavite monastery).
The Assam Cattle Preservation Act of 2021 also regulated the transportation, and slaughter of all cattle, and sale of beef and beef products in the state.
In December last year, the Assam cabinet decided to amend the 2021 act and put a restriction on public consumption of beef also. Accordingly, sale and consumption of beef is prohibited in public places such as restaurants and hotels. UNI ANP BD SSP

Haxaribagh, June 29 (UNI) Blending spiritual reverence with social outreach, MP Manish Jaiswal today launched the Sansad Teerth Darshan campaign in Hazaribagh—a unique initiative aimed at enabling elderly citizens from his constituency to embark on sacred pilgrimages. The campaign began with the ceremonial departure of 180 senior citizens from the revered Narsingh Baba temple in Khapriyawan under Katkamsandi block. In a moment filled with symbolism and cultural gravitas, Jaiswal and BJP state organisational secretary Karmveer Singh washed the feet of pilgrims before they boarded buses, a gesture that transformed politics into a deeply personal act of service. 'This is more than just a yatra. It's a son fulfilling the spiritual dreams of his elders,' Jaiswal said. The first batch of pilgrims—residents of Khapriyawan, Nawada, and Banha villages—will undertake a five-day journey to Varanasi, Ayodhya, Prayagraj (Sangam), and Vindhyachal. All pilgrims were dressed in traditional yellow attire, and their send-off included Vedic chants, bhajans, flower showers, and tilak ceremonies, lending a deeply devotional air to the event. A surprise drizzle just as the buses departed was seen by many as a divine blessing. Jaiswal, echoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's emphasis on cultural values, said the campaign was inspired by the PM's idea of combining seva with sanskaar. 'We've organised mass marriages for 101 underprivileged couples, distributed lehengas to over 12,000 girls, launched football tournaments, and ensured traditional weapons reach Ramnavami Akharas. Now, through this yatra, we carry our elders to places they longed to visit,' he said. Each bus carried 60 pilgrims and five BJP workers responsible for safety, comfort, and coordination. The logistics were meticulously planned: ID cards with emergency contacts, medical kits, snacks, water bottles, dental kits, and ritual offerings were distributed to each pilgrim. A photograph of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, featuring the pilgrim's image, will be presented as a souvenir. Medical checkpoints have also been designated along the route. The temple courtyard was packed with thousands of supporters and residents, many arriving well before the scheduled time. For some, it was a festival; for others, a deeply emotional farewell. From incense to rain, and sacred chants to disciplined coordination, the atmosphere embodied what one attendee described as 'governance with a soul.' The scale and tone of the event suggested more than just religious facilitation—it was an act of what might be called pilgrimage diplomacy: connecting with voters not through speeches, but through shared values, intimate gestures, and cultural touchstones. As politics across India becomes increasingly transactional, Jaiswal's campaign is notable for returning to something elemental—faith, community, and respect. Whether this shapes electoral outcomes or not, it certainly deepens the relationship between a representative and the represented. In a landscape where symbolism often trumps substance, Sansad Teerth Darshan attempts to unite both. EAM Jaishankar visiting US to participate in Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting
New Delhi, June 29 (UNI) External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is paying an official visit to the US from June 30 to July 2, to participate in the Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting (QFMM), scheduled for July is visiting the US at the invitation of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The Quad Foreign Ministers will build upon the discussions held during the last QFMM, which took place in Washington D.C. on January 21. Central Kisan Committee meeting commences in Kannur
Kannur, June 29 (UNI) The two-day meeting of the Central Kisan Committee (CKC), the executive body of the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), began at the EK Nayanay Academy, near here, on Sunday. AIKS President Ashok Dhawle hoisted the flag in the morning, as part of the inaugural function, and all the CKC members paid tributes at the martyrs column, honouring the sacrifices of those who laid down their lives in the struggle to uplift the lives of the Indian farmers. Ashok Dhawle said "In the light of increasing attacks on farmers and working people, the CKC meeting strongly emphasised the need to mobilise the peasantry across the country and work for the success of the All India Strike on July 9th, jointly called by the Joint Platform of Central Trade Unions and the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM). Farmers and agricultural workers will have massive demonstrations across India taking up their demands.' AIKS General Secretary Viju Krishnan presented the Draft Report, which analysed the current developments in the agrarian sector and the intensifying economic crisis that continues to grip workers and peasants across the country. The report is critical of the signing of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the United Kingdom and the impending agreement with the United States, scheduled to be signed by July 9, 2025. These FTAs the report believes will drastically reduce or eliminate import duties on key agricultural products, threatening the livelihoods of millions of Indian farmers. The CKC meeting in Kannur will deliberate in detail on strategies to intensify struggles in defence of farmers' rights, resist pro-corporate policies, and strengthen unity with the working class to confront the 'anti-people direction of the current BJP-RSS regime'. On Saturday about 75 members of the CKC were given a warm reception by the Kerala Karshaka Sangham (state unit of the AIKS). The CKC Members visited historical sites of peasant resistance against feudal landlords and British imperialism in northern Kerala-Karivellur and Kayyur, these two regions hold a proud legacy in the history of the peasant movement in India.
