The member said that land around Konaje is being considered, as it lies at the centre of the taluk. The establishment of the panchayat office within the university premises is expected to enhance the institution's profile and bring more people to the area, which is currently considered relatively secluded. "The plan is rooted in a far-sighted vision to benefit both the university and the local community. There is no ulterior motive behind the proposal," the member added.According to another syndicate member, there is also a request to allocate land for the construction of a swimming pool and Ambedkar Bhavan. "We have not taken this request into consideration at the moment and discussed only the allocation of land for the taluk panchayat," the syndicate member said.K Raju Mogaveera, registrar of Mangalore University, said that the agenda on allocating land to establish the Ullal taluk panchayat office on Mangalore University land was discussed in the syndicate meeting. "As per the procedures, we will be writing to the state govt to seek their opinion. Mangalore University alone has no powers to allocate the land to anyone."Sources added that around two acres of land were requested to be allocated for the taluk office building.

Hacktivist Stole Columbia University Students' Data In A Cyberattack

New York: A politically motivated hacker breached Columbia University's data systems last week, stealing troves of student documents while briefly shutting down the school's computer systems, a university official said Wednesday. The June 24 cyberattack prompted widespread network outages on campus, locking students and staff out of their email accounts, coursework and video conference software for several hours. On the same day, images of President Donald Trump's smiling face appeared on several public monitors across the Manhattan campus. A spokesperson for Columbia declined to elaborate on the political motivations behind the attack. But officials described a highly sophisticated "hacktivist" who had gained access to private student records in an attempt to further a political agenda. The spokesperson said it was unclear if the Trump photo display was connected to the data breach. "We are investigating the scope of the apparent theft and will share our findings with the University community as well as anyone whose personal information was compromised," the school said. The cyberattack comes as Columbia remains in the crosshairs of the Trump administration, which has threatened to pull $400 million in federal funds over what it claims is the school's failure to protect Jewish students. Negotiations over a possible settlement are ongoing. The university has already agreed to a host of changes demanded by Trump, including placing its Middle East studies department under new supervision and overhauling its rules for protests and student discipline. In March, a cyberattack against New York University resulted in student admission records briefly appearing on the school's website. An online hacker who took credit for that action on social media said the intent was to prove the university was not in compliance with the Supreme Court decision banning affirmative action in college admissions. An NYU spokesperson said at the time that the data displayed on its webpage was "inaccurate and misleading," adding that the university "scrupulously complies with the law."

JNU planning to hold in-house entrance exam for two doctoral courses

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is planning to hold an in-house entrance examination for doctoral courses in Korean Studies and Cinema Studies, a source said on Wednesday. 'All Deans have accepted this process and it has been signed by them. Once the proposal is accepted, the administration will hold the entrance exam for the two subjects,' the source said. Since 2023, no entrance exam has been conducted for the doctoral studies in the two subjects as they are not covered under the University Grants Commission–National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET). Meanwhile, the JNU Students' Union's hunger strike entered its sixth day on Wednesday. The union has been demanding in-house entrance examination for all courses and allowing UGC-NET 2025 aspirants to apply for this year's PhD admissions. Admissions for PhD courses are under way, while the result of UGC-NET 2025 is awaited.
