Junior Boks grounded after thrashing Aussies in U-20 champs opener

TimesLIVE3 days ago
The Junior Springboks will savour their opening round victory over Australia in the World Rugby Under-20 Championship, but the team will keep their feet firmly on the ground and prepare for the next big challenge, their second pool match against England on Friday.
South Africa U-20 coach Kevin Foote was a happy man after his team scored 11 tries to beat the Australians 73-17 in their Pool A opener in Calvisano, Italy, on Sunday.
Foote praised the team's conditioning as they outplayed Australia for large parts of the game, which was staged in extreme heat and humidity.
'The conditions were tough, but we managed our nutrition and hydration well,' he said.
'Our preparation was key, both physically and mentally and I think our conditioning was outstanding and for that the team's conditioning staff deserve praise for their hard work.'

Foote was pleased how his players kept to their game plan against the tactically astute Australians.
'We executed our plans perfectly and adapted well under pressure. We balanced our kicking and running game well and our leadership on the field was calm and composed.
'The boys made mature decisions under pressure, which was crucial.'
The Junior Bok coach highlighted the seamless integration of new players, with Jaco Grobbelaar and Jaco Williams both joining the team just before they left for Italy.
SA U-20 captain Riley Norton, who had a good game at lock, was also pleased with their effort.
'It was a great win against a quality Australian side, but we can improve on certain areas,' said Norton, adding there will be no room for complacency, especially with defending champions England their next opponents on Friday.
'It is just one game under our belts and we want to learn and continuously improve as the tournament progresses,' he said. 'I'm glad for the win and excited for the forthcoming challenges, which will require thorough preparation and review.'
England opened their campaign beating Scotland 56-19.

Corbin Bosch looks to secure Test spot

THE Corbin Bosch the world has seen in the first Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo is a completely different player to what the domestic scene has experienced over the years. The 30-year-old has been able to elevate his game, going from lacking consistency with the ball in domestic cricket to being a lot tidier in Test cricket. Before the Test in Bulawayo, Bosch had only one five-wicket haul in red ball cricket, a feat that tells the tale about his career. Reflecting on the last eight months of his career, where he has been in and around the Proteas Test team on a regular basis including being included in the squad for World Test Championship final, Bosch highlighted that he has been inspired to improve his overall game. To help South Africa beat Zimbabwe by 328-runs in the first Test, Bosch claimed his first Test fiver - his second in red ball cricket, and also scored his maiden Test century - the first of his professional career. "I think in international cricket, you realise how fine your margins really are, especially coming from a bowling standpoint. I think watching the game at Lord's really inspired me a lot, watching how KG and a bunch of the Australian bowlers, went about their business in that game," Bosch told the media on Wednesday. "It was incredibly special. It actually inspired me and made me realise how good these guys really are, competing with the best in the world. "It made me believe that's where I want to be, that's what I want to aspire to in my cricketing career - to be on that level (like) those guys were delivering day in, day out, time and time again. "Their execution and plans were, I would pretty much say, perfect. It was an absolute spectacle just to watch from the side, let alone to play. "Being able to watch all the guys live, I think a lot of the time people get fooled by what you see on TV, but watching people operate in person makes you realise and appreciate how they really are. "It's inspired me to work on my game a bit more and be more consistent, be a lot sharper."

Minor tweaks to Junior Bok side for England clash at U20 Championship

Coach Kevin Foote has made just one forced change to his starting team for the match in Rovigo. Gino Cupido has been brought into the SA U20 side for Friday's match against England in Rovigo. Picture: David van der Sandt/Gallo Images Having beaten Australia in their World Rugby U20 Championship opener in Calvisano on Sunday, the Junior Springboks next face England, the defending champions, in Rovigo on Friday. And coach Kevin Foote has made just one change to his starting XV for the match, with Gino Cupido replacing Demitre Erasmus (illness) in midfield. There are also two changes on the bench, with Ceano Everson (scrumhalf) and Dominic Malgas (utility) now among the replacements, in place of Erich Visser and Ian van der Merwe. The rest of the players who helped the side beat Australia 73-17 on Sunday have been retained. 'We can't wait for it' 'There is a huge amount of excitement around Friday and the magnitude of this match,' said Foote. 'We know how important this is, playing against the defending champions. It's an honour to be involved in such a game and a real challenge for us this week. We can't wait for it. 'With Demitre suffering from a bit of heat stroke, we brought in Gino at outside centre, while Ceano and Dominic cover scrumhalf, centre and flyhalf on the bench. However, England are the reigning champions, and it will be a difficult task to overcome them. Foote expressed excitement about the clash, acknowledging its magnitude. 'We are very proud of the guys in terms of how focused and humble they are staying after the victory over Australia, and how hungry they are for the next challenge against England,' according to Foote. Foote added they selected the side which they feel will be suited for what the English will throw at them. Riley Norton will captain the side and his physical combination with JJ Theron will be crucial. How they go about claiming lineouts and competing against the throw, will also come under scrutiny.
