Your Food Packaging Is Shedding Microplastics Into Every Meal, Study Reveals
A painstaking review of 103 scientific studies on microplastic food contamination found actions as simple as opening a plastic drink bottle or using a plastic chopping board can shave off tiny particles of common polymers.
Even glass bottles that use a plastic gasket, plastic-lined pizza boxes, plastic-lined disposable coffee cups, plastic tea bags, plastic wrappings, and microwaveable plastic containers shed microplastic like a Persian cat sheds fur in spring.
The problem, a team led by biologist Lisa Zimmermann of the non-profit Food Packaging Forum in Switzerland says, is ubiquitous.

"This is the first systematic evidence of how normal and intended use of foodstuffs packaged in plastics can be contaminated with micro- and nanoplastics," Zimmermann told CNN.
"We found food packaging is actually a direct source of the micro- and nanoplastics measured in food."
The more scientists look into micro- and nanoplastics, or MNPs, the more we see just how widespread they have become. These are tiny pieces of material, too small to see, released by a variety of polymers as they're used or break up in the environment.
Plastic is ubiquitous in our modern society, providing a cheap, easily manufactured solution to everything from storage to clothing to furnishings. In recent decades it has become clear its resistance to degrading doesn't mean it is impervious to crumbling into smaller fragments, which easily filter through ecosystems.
Studies have found microplastics throughout the human body, including placentas. It's been found in every major organ in mice, including their fetuses.
What makes this even more worrying is that we just have very little idea about the health impacts, although it's not looking promising: A study last year found that cardiac and stroke patients with a high concentration of microplastics in their carotid artery plaque had a significantly elevated risk of death.
Zimmermann and her colleagues examined 103 studies that have investigated the presence of plastic particles in food and food simulants. From these studies, they extracted 600 entries about food contact articles, of which 96 percent reported the presence of MNPs.
Those entries were also compiled into a searchable and filterable dashboard that anyone can access, allowing users to home in on different types of food contact articles, from packaging to baby bottles, as well as different types of plastic.

Of particular note, the researchers found, is that multiple studies found that for some reusable plastic items, such as melamine bowls, the amount of microplastics shed increased with each wash. This suggests that repeated heating and abrasion increases the rate at which these items degrade.
The researchers also note that ultra-processed food contains more microplastic than minimally processed food. The reason for this is simple: more processing steps mean greater exposure to plastic food-processing equipment, resulting in more MNPs in the final product.
Their findings, the researchers say, strongly indicate that not only is a lot more research warranted, but also that more needs to be done to minimize the use of plastics in food packaging and preparation.
"Our study shows that under intended or foreseeable conditions of use, plastic food contact articles can release MNPs into foodstuffs," they write in their paper.
"The contribution of plastic food contact articles to human MNP exposure is currently unclear and warrants further investigation. Further research is also necessary to establish human health impacts associated with MNP exposures, but a precautionary approach aimed at limiting human exposure to MNPs, including from food contact articles, is prudent."

NHS disruption expected as resident doctors vote for strike action
The NHS could face six months of disruption after resident doctors in England voted in favour of strike action. Downing Street said pay negotiations will not be reopened because the Government 'can't be more generous' than it has been already this year. The ballot gives resident doctors a mandate for strike action until January 2026. Some 90% of voting resident doctors in England, formerly known as junior doctors, said they would down their stethoscopes and take to picket lines amid an ongoing row over pay. The British Medical Association (BMA) said there was a turnout of 55%. The union has said resident doctors need a pay uplift of 29.2% to reverse 'pay erosion' since 2008/09. Health Secretary Wes Streeting said it was 'disappointing' that medics were threatening strike action, saying that the 'majority of resident doctors did not vote to strike'. BMA resident doctors committee co-chairs Dr Melissa Ryan and Dr Ross Nieuwoudt said in a statement: 'All we need is a credible pay offer and nobody need strike. 'Doctors don't take industrial action lightly – but they know it is preferable to watching their profession wither away. 'The next move is the Government's. 'Will it repeat the mistakes of its predecessor? Or will it do the right thing and negotiate a path to full pay restoration and the restoration of doctors' confidence in our profession's future?' 'Thanks to this Government, resident doctors have received a 28.9% pay rise compared to three years ago, and the highest pay award of the entire public sector this year. 'I met with the BMA today, and while we can't go further on pay than we already have this year, I offered to work with them to resolve issues they face around working conditions. These are not grounds for strike action. My offer to meet their entire committee remains open.' A Number 10 spokesman said: 'We aren't going to reopen negotiations on pay. 'Resident doctors have received the highest pay award across the public sector for two years in a row, and we've been clear that we can't be more generous than we already have this year.' A fresh bout of walkouts could cause severe upheaval across the health service. Previous strikes by resident doctors and other staff groups saw some 1.5 million appointments, procedures and operations postponed as a result. The news will come as a blow to the Government after Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's 'plan for change' pledged that by July 2029, 92% of patients will be seen within 18 weeks for routine hospital treatment such as hip and knee replacements. The waiting list for routine hospital treatment in England is currently at its lowest level for two years, according to the latest figures, with an estimated 7.39 million treatments waiting to be carried out at the end of April. Danny Mortimer, chief executive of NHS Employers, which is part of the NHS Confederation, said: 'Further strikes are the last thing health leaders wanted and could result in tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of operations and procedures being delayed or cancelled, leaving patients in pain or discomfort.' Daniel Elkeles, chief executive of NHS Providers, said: 'A return to industrial action would be a huge setback – bad for patients, for staff and for the NHS.' In September, BMA members voted to accept a Government pay deal worth 22.3% on average over two years. And the 2025/26 pay deal saw resident doctors given a 4% uplift plus £750 'on a consolidated basis' – working out as an average pay rise of 5.4%. The BMA call for a 29.2% uplift is based on Retail Prices Index (RPI) inflation, the measure of average changes in the price of goods and services used by most households. Edward Argar, shadow health secretary, said: 'We warned Labour that caving in to union demands for above-inflation pay rises without conditions would set a dangerous precedent and that the unions would simply come back for more. 'Generally, cottage cheese is rich in casein—a slow-digesting protein that helps with satiety and muscle repair—and provides calcium, selenium, and B vitamins,' shares McGowan. Speaking of B vitamins, 'this protein-packed dairy food is also a great source of riboflavin (B2), which plays a key antioxidant role in reducing cell damage,' Baham adds. Ultimately, cottage cheese is pretty darn similar to Greek yogurt in terms of health benefits. 'Like Greek yogurt, it's a nutrient-dense, high-protein option that can support bone health and weight management,' McGowan summarizes—alongside championing energy metabolism and gut, heart, and immune health. But this brings us to the question, which of these dairy products is actually better for you? While the numbers are very similar, Greek yogurt offers slightly more micronutrients pretty much across the board compared to cottage cheese, with the exception of phosphorus and sodium. It's also slightly lower in calories, a more reliable source of probiotics, and generally lower in lactose. There's virtually no difference between the fat and saturated fat content of the two dairy products. The sodium in cottage cheese, however, is not to be overlooked, as one small half cup serving provides almost a fifth of your daily allowance of the mineral—and most of us eat more than half a cup in one sitting. While cottage cheese might be the only high-sodium food one has in a day, that's often not the case—and prolonged excessive sodium intake can lead to elevated blood pressure levels over time. But when deciding which of the two is the better high-protein snack, cottage cheese technically wins, as it boasts three more grams per serving. 'I love adding Greek yogurt to boost the probiotics and protein in my smoothies, or using it as a substitute for sour cream or mayo in my homemade dressings, whereas I like to use cottage cheese in both savory and sweet dishes like tasty dips, fluffy pancakes, and even homemade ice cream to reduce fat and added sugars,' shares Baham.
