Japanese E-10 bullet trains to run on Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor

India likely to use E5 variant Japanese-make bullet trains for trials and then buy the newest E10 variant ones for full blown commercial operations, senior officials told ET. This also means E10 trains will be introduced simultaneously in India and Japan, around 2030.
'The newest Japanese trains will run on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high speed corridor,' the official said.
The entire 508 km corridor (352 km in Gujarat and 156 km in Maharashtra) is being developed with Japanese Shinkansen technology. This is expected to set new benchmarks for speed, safety, and reliability.
An official statement said Japanese Shinkansen is currently running E5 trains. The next generation trains are E10.
'In the spirit of strategic partnership between Japan and India, the Japanese government has agreed to introduce E10 Shinkansen trains in
the project,' the statement added.
According to a status report on the bullet train project issued Monday, 310 km of viaduct construction was complete.
Commercial operations for the Bullet Train are slated for 2027, with the first prototype expected to run in 2026.
While the Railway Board was earlier relying solely on Japanese technology for bullet trains, India may now opt for a tailored mix with more domestic partners. A complete signalling and telecommunication (S&T) system contract was recently awarded to vendors offering European technology with Indian partners.
In parallel, talks with Japanese companies are continuing on the supply of Shinkansen trainsets. Trials with E5 variant Shinkansen trainsets will ascertain their feasibility, and identify any modifications needed in the under-development E10 trainsets.
Besides Japanese firms, the government has tasked Integral Coach Factory (ICF) with developing a bullet train capable of reaching speeds of up to 280 kmph. The railway production unit has partnered with defence public sector enterprise -
BEML
to produce these trains.

Enence 2.0 Undo Aviation expert Captain Ehsan Khalid told PTI that investigators should also check the flight data recorder for stabilizer inputs data, in case it was not fixed properly and created conditions for the crash during the takeoff roll of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. The stabilizer is part of the aircraft's tail and helps in pitching up and down its nose on command from the pilot. Live Events Khalid has flown Airbus and Boeing planes, including Boeing 737. He said if a fault crops up in the stabilizer during takeoff roll, the pilot flying has to perform the following memorised routine: take one hand off the control column, reach down and turn off the stabilizer control switches located under the thrust lever assembly. As it happens, the orange switches are right next to the fuel control switches, which have become the focus of the investigation and much speculation into the crash. Khalid suggested that there is a possibility the first officer, who was flying the plane, turned off the fuel to both engines by mistake while intending to cut off the stabilizer, even though both switches feel different to touch. During takeoff, the pilot does not look anywhere except straight ahead to ensure the plane is climbing safely, he said. "I have a problem with the Boeing philosophy. It's the pilot flying who is required to turn off the stabilizer in case of a fault and not the other pilot," he said. In its preliminary report on the Boeing 787-8 crash , the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) said the fuel supply to both engines of the plane was cut off within a gap of one second, causing confusion in the cockpit soon after takeoff. "In the cockpit voice recording, one of the pilots is heard asking the other why did he cut off. The other pilot responded that he did not do so," the report said. According to Khalid, the entire cockpit voice recording could have been made public by the AAIB and if that was released, "these speculations or insinuations or smear campaign would not have been there because a pilot, as a community, feels that they are the goalkeeper of flight safety". He also said the AAIB report has given rise to more speculations, which were not there before. Khalid also noted that an electrical malfunction could also have resulted in the aircraft's fuel switches being cut off soon after takeoff. "While it is also true that the switch may be in one position and that position may be 1 and the second position is 0 in electrical terms... (then) 0 to 1 or 1 to 0 (position) could have transitioned because of an electrical malfunction or a signal malfunction while the switch could be at the same point. "That is why I think AAIB, in their own judgment, were very careful in not using the word that fuel switches were moved. They could have used it. It is not that they do not know about it," he said. Amid speculations that pilot error could have caused the crash, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on Thursday said it is too early to reach any definite conclusions on the Air India plane crash as the probe is still on and urged everyone to refrain from spreading premature narratives that risk undermining the integrity of the investigative process amid speculations. Through the Government Tool Room and Training Centre (GTTC), technical education is being given a thrust by the State government as it will help a great deal in addressing the problem of unemployment, Minister for Medical Education, Skill Development, Entrepreneurship and Livelihood Sharanprakash Patil has said. He was inaugurating a new GTTC training complex at Nelogal village in Haveri district on Wednesday. The training complex has been built by the Department of Skill Development, Entrepreneurship and Livelihood in association with GTTC. Dr. Patil said that GTTC education will help provide more jobs compared to engineering studies. GTTC education has helped students in getting 75% of the jobs. The Minister said that there is more demand for skill-based education in industries and so to train students in the State, industries linkage scheme has been launched. 'This will help provide training to youths. Along with learning, skill development is being facilitated. And, for hands-on training, an MOU has been signed with a German company. This apart, impetus has been given to learning German, Italian and Japanese languages. Knowledge of foreign language will help our students in getting jobs abroad,' he said. Minister for Textiles, Sugarcane Development, Sugar and Agricultural Marketing Shivanand Patil said that a medical college and GTTCs have already started functioning in the district. The State government is focusing on providing technical education as it will facilitate development, he said. BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai said that along with an engineering college, the district now has a GTTC which will further benefit its students. He said that at the GTTC, students will get an opportunity to pursue new courses. He called upon students to make good use of the opportunity. Deputy Speaker Rudrappa Lamani said that with the establishment of the new GTTC in the district, students will not be forced to go to other districts for learning in GTTCs. Why is China losing its shipbuilding dominance: Trump or global slowdown?

The longstanding dominance of China in the global shipbuilding industry has weakened sharply in the first half of 2025. Latest industry data, as cited by the South China Morning Post, shows that Chinese shipyards — which traditionally account for the largest share of new ship orders globally — have recorded a steep fall in new business this year. According to Clarksons Research, new ship orders for Chinese shipyards plunged 68 per cent year-on-year to 26.3 million deadweight tonnes (dwt) in the first six months of 2025. This marks one of the steepest declines in recent years. In contrast, South Korea — world's second-largest shipbuilding nation — saw a relatively modest drop of 7 per cent over the same period, receiving new orders totalling 14.2 million dwt, the report said. Who is replacing China's shipbuilding dominance? Although South Korea also experienced a drop in orders, it narrowed the gap to China in relative terms. China's share of global new ship orders in the first half of 2025 fell from 75 per cent to 56 per cent year-on-year. South Korea's share rose from 14 per cent to 30 per cent over the same period. Although China still remains the largest volume player, this represents a substantial rebalancing of the global shipbuilding market. Experts included in the report suggested that Korean and Japanese shipyards have benefited from shipowners' decisions to build boats outside of China based on increased geopolitical tension. South Korea's major players, including Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and Hanwha Ocean, have also increased their presence in the US market. Both companies have been bidding for contracts related to the maintenance and overhaul of US Navy vessels since 2024. In April this year, HHI signed an agreement to share technology and cooperate with Huntington Ingalls Industries, the largest military shipbuilder in the US. Are Trump's tariffs hurting Chinese shipyards? The report pointed to a combination of factors behind China's falling market share. One of the clearest drivers has been the series of measures by the Donald Trump-led US administration targeting China's shipbuilding sector. In April this year, the US imposed steep fees on ships owned, operated or built by Chinese companies entering American ports. Additional tariffs on Chinese-made equipment used in shipbuilding, including ship-to-shore cranes, have further strained Chinese shipyards' competitiveness. While these restrictions have met with resistance from industry groups, market data suggests they are beginning to have an effect. Beyond ship construction, Chinese shipyards are also losing ground in repair and maintenance services. Data shows China's share of repair work for very large crude carriers (VLCCs) fell from an average of 70 per cent between 2021 and 2024 to around 50 per cent in the first half of 2025. Is weakening global demand affecting Chinese shipbuilding? The US restrictions alone do not fully explain the shift. Analysts cited by South China Morning Post note that a cyclical decline in global shipbuilding demand is also impacting Chinese yards disproportionately. During the demand boom between 2021 and 2024, excess orders typically spilled over from capacity-limited Korean and Japanese yards to China's more flexible shipbuilders. However, with global new orders slowing in 2025, that spillover effect has diminished. Shipowners reportedly prefer Korean or Japanese-built vessels as they fetch higher resale values on the second-hand market, further compounding the downturn for Chinese shipyards. Despite the current slump, larger Chinese shipyards are expected to remain resilient. However, the outlook is less certain for smaller, private yards with weaker order books.
