Irrigation Minister reviews progress of smart water management project in cooperation with AECID

Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam has convened a meeting to assess the progress of the 'Smart Water Resources Management in the Agriculture Sector in Egypt' project, implemented in collaboration with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).
The review focused on the project component titled 'Identifying Opportunities for Developing Smart Irrigation Farms in Egypt.' As part of this effort, five pilot farms have been selected to implement smart irrigation technologies across the governorates of Qalyubeya, Dakahleya, Beheira, Alexandria, and Sohag. The National Water Research Center has prepared a study proposal for applying smart irrigation models at these selected sites.
Sewilam emphasized that the project aims to enhance the efficiency of water usage and overall management of water resources in agriculture, while simultaneously boosting productivity in the targeted regions, which span both the Nile Delta and Upper Egypt.
The initiative also seeks to localize smart irrigation technologies and modern agricultural practices, encouraging farmers to adopt innovative solutions that optimize water consumption, improve crop yields, and reinforce national food security.
He noted that the project promotes irrigation systems that are responsive to climatic and environmental conditions as well as the specific water needs of various crops. In addition, it supports Egypt's broader digital transformation efforts in irrigation management and monitoring, enabling farmers to select appropriate technologies based on the human and financial capacities of their local communities.
The Minister highlighted that the Ministry is pursuing a long-term strategy for sustainable water management, which includes exchanging expertise and learning from international best practices—particularly Spain's advanced experience in modern and smart irrigation systems.
The collaboration also aims to improve water planning and management processes, adopt integrated water resources management (IWRM) principles, increase irrigation efficiency, and promote the reuse of agricultural drainage water while preserving water quality.
Sewilam concluded the meeting by directing the continuation of project activities according to the established timeline and stressed the importance of maintaining close coordination between the Ministry and the Spanish side to ensure the project's successful implementation.

Egyptian Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad announced the success of the first mission in implementing a program to monitor and install satellite tracking devices on sharks in the Red Sea. The program was implemented by an Egyptian team comprising specialists from the Ministry, Hurghada Environmental Protection & Conservation Association (HEPCA), and the Chamber of Diving and Marine Activities, done in cooperation with the ministry's Hurghada Green Project and a French expert specialized in installing satellite tracking and monitoring devices on sharks. Fouad explained in a statement on Saturday that the team succeeded in installing nine tracking devices on the Oceanic Whitetip Tiger Shark in the areas of the Brother Islands & Elphinstone in Marsa Alam and the Shehr Reef in Safaga. Samples were also taken from targeted sharks during the scientific expedition to determine their genetic characteristics in the Red Sea. They collected 14 shark samples and photographed the dorsal fins of several Oceanic Whitetip Tiger Sharks. The goal was to compile a photo album of this species, which is characterized by the presence of distinct external markings on its fins, which can be used to distinguish between individuals. Fouad noted that Egypt is among the first countries within the Red Sea region to implement a shark monitoring and tracking program – including tiger sharks, mako sharks, and oceanic whitetip sharks. The Minister of Environment said that the program primarily aims to study the movement of sharks in the Red Sea basin, as sharks provide significant economic and environmental value. She commended the team's successful scientific mission, which included implementing the best environmentally sound methods for installing tracking devices, tagging the targeted sharks, and safely returning all tagged fish to the water. The team also conducted all tests on the devices and adjusted their satellite data reception signals, with detailed, and accurate data on the tagged fish to be transmitted within a year.

Egypt's Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources, Hani Sewilam, called for enhanced cooperation amongst the Nile Basin countries to implement the principles of the 'water, food, energy, and ecosystems nexus', ensuring mutual benefits for all involved. In his speech at the opening of the training program workshop for Mediterranean countries, 'Financing Climate Projects to Implement Water, Food, Energy, and Ecosystems Nexus Projects,' he added that the Arab region is one of the most water-scarce regions in the world. He explained that 19 of the 22 Arab countries suffer from water scarcity, more than 90 percent of the population of Arab countries faces critical levels of water scarcity, and that 21 Arab countries rely on shared international water resources. Sewilam warned that Egypt in particular faces exceptional water challenges due to its low rainfall rates and its status as one of the driest countries in the world. It relies almost entirely on the Nile River to meet more than 97 percent of its water needs. These challenges are compounded by rising temperatures and the accompanying increase in water consumption, he warned. The Minister of Irrigation explained that, in the face of these challenges, it has become necessary to transition to the 'Second Generation Irrigation System 2.0,' which seeks to rely more heavily on modern technology in water management. Sewilam referred to the use of satellite imagery, mathematical models, and drone photography to calculate crop composition and improve water management and distribution. He also highlighted the modernization of water facilities, such as the the High Dam and the Aswan Reservoir, the expansion of smart irrigation systems, and the shift to water distribution using discharges instead of levels. Egypt is continuing its plans to expand the treatment and reuse of agricultural drainage water, he said, alongside using environmentally friendly natural materials to protect beaches and rehabilitate canals, and govern groundwater using digital databases.
