Yankees right-handed pitcher Luis Gil impresses in his second rehab start, nears return
'Stuff was good, decent command,' said Boone, who watched a recording of Friday's game on Saturday morning. 'More importantly, another step and kind of building that pitch count into 57 pitches.'
Gil threw 3 1/3 innings for Double-A Somerset, striking out seven while allowing two hits and two runs. He gave up a two-run homer in the first inning. Gil threw 39 of his 57 pitches for strikes. He is scheduled for one more minor league start at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday before possibly making his 2025 debut with the Yankees.
'I think the fastball is playing,' Boone said. 'You see the jump on that fastball seemed like last night he was kind of in that, kind of living in that 95 range. I think I saw him up to 97 but it was like that live, you know, he's getting to where he wants it.'
Gil suffered a strained lat in spring training that has kept him out of the Yankees rotation all season. The 2024 AL Rookie of the Year was 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA with 171 strikeouts in 151 2/3 innings last season. His first rehab start was on July 13 and was also 3 1/3 innings.

He has also earned a reputation for having issues with wide receivers who freelance, which DK Metcalf is known for. Rodgers has lost the battle to Father Time, and he'll be a below-average quarterback in 2025. Making things worse for Pittsburgh, his regular appearances on The Pat McAfee Show could become an added distraction for a team that is likely to fall short of expectations this fall. Brian Daboll has delivered a 9-25 record over the last two seasons and has clearly alienated several of his now-former assistant coaches. Yet, somehow, New York Giants owner John Mara decided to keep Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen. Not only that, he allowed them to trade up in Round 1 to select quarterback Jaxson Dart. Given how difficult the Giants' schedule is in 2025, even winning six games seems like a long shot. So, New York will likely be right back in this spot again come January, which could result in a new regime either getting stuck with Dart for a full season or the franchise having to admit it wasted a first-round pick just one year after making it. Loomis has built one of the worst rosters in the NFL, and his refusal to hit the reset button has created the worst cap situation in the league. He doubled down on that this year, overpaying Chase Young, signing Justin Reid, and using a top-40 pick on 26-year-old rookie quarterback Tyler Shough. Most general managers would've been fired by now, but Loomis continues to stick around and remains adamantly opposed to thinking about the future at all. Green Bay Packers: Releasing Jaire Alexander This isn't a knock on the Green Bay Packers for not trading Jaire Alexander. After all, the All-Pro cornerback refused to renegotiate a contract that would have facilitated a trade. Instead, we believe Green Bay will live to regret its decision not to simply find a financial resolution with Alexander. He reportedly would have taken the deal he signed with the Baltimore Ravens to remain in Green Bay. The Packers' front office decided to roll the dice with Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine as its top outside corners in 2025, and there's very little depth behind them. When injury strikes the Packers' secondary—which feels unavoidable—Green Bay will regret cutting Alexander. For now, though, we expect there to be a resolution this summer. The same can't be said for a Trey Hendrickson contract extension. The All-Pro edge rusher means everything to this defense, yet the Bengals' front office is handling negotiations as if Hendrickson is expendable. What makes the situation worse is that the Defensive Player of the Year candidate has made it very clear he'll sit out multiple regular-season games if a deal isn't in place by Week 1. The bet here is that he follows through on that, and that would be devastating for a team that has little margin for error to make the playoffs. New York Giants' Jaxson Dart strives to be elite: 'I give myself no other option'
New York Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart isn't short on confidence, and he's set extremely high expectations for himself. Despite starting his first NFL season on the bench, Dart has established some lofty goals for his professional career. Once he takes over the reins, nothing but the very best will be considered acceptable. Dart not only aims to become an elite quarterback at the NFL level, but he also strives to be viewed in the same lens as Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, and Muhammad Ali. "I want to be elite," Dart told Steve Serby of the New York Post. "I feel like I've been somebody that's always trying to chase the top. . . I don't feel like I'm somebody that really ever gets satisfied with just being good and OK." And what gives Dart the confidence that he will be able to achieve such greatness? "'Cause I give myself no other option," he said. The first obstacle Dart will have to contend with, other than waiting his turn, is handling the bright lights of New York City and the pressures that come from playing in the largest media market in the world. The Big Apple can weigh heavily on some, greats included. It's not for everyone, but that's a challenge Dart embraces fully. "I ain't scared of it. I told the coaches and the personnel department when I was on my visit here, I told them this is the place I wanted to be. I want to be on the biggest stage," he said. That falls in line with the advice Dart received from another Ole Miss alumnus, Eli Manning. "One thing he told me early on was to embrace the city, embrace the people, the culture, embrace New Jersey," he said. "You embrace the whole community, you don't ever view yourself as higher than anybody else or above anybody, you look at everybody as we're all the same, especially in God's eyes. I want to do my best to be an advocate for the community, and then at the same time, I just want to win." And winning is something Dart intends to do a lot of. He's even envisioned how it will all play out. "Absolutely," he said when asked if he's visualized hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. "I want to win a few of 'em. You asked me who I want to go to dinner with and I told you that I want to go to dinner with the best athletes, the ones who won the championships, who won the gold medals, and have been world champions.
