Maa Box Office Collection Day 4: Kajol's horror film surpasses Kangana Ranaut's Emergency, will hit Rs 20 crore today

Indian Express21 hours ago
The Kajol-starrer Maa had a decent opening at the box office before it saw a slight increase in its collections over the weekend. However, on Monday, the film saw a significant drop of almost 72 percent. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film failed to surpass the Monday litmus test and minted Rs 1.97 crore. This brings the film's domestic collection to Rs 19.62 crore.
Maa marks Kajol's first time in the horror genre. The film, which is produced by her husband Ajay Devgn, began its box office journey on Friday, minting Rs 4.65 crore. The film witnessed a jump over the weekend, minting Rs 6 crore and Rs 7 crore on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. However, Maa failed to maintain the momentum on Monday and saw a significant drop, collecting only Rs 1.97 crore.
Maa had an overall 12.67% Hindi occupancy on Monday. In the NCR region, where it had the maximum number of shows (633), it recorded 16.50% occupancy. In Mumbai, it had 473 shows and saw 14.50% occupancy, whereas in Pune, where it had 193 shows, it recorded 12.25% occupancy.
Despite its lukewarm performance, Maa has surpassed Kangana Ranaut's Emergency in terms of lifetime domestic collection. Emergency's India nett collection stood at Rs 18.35 crore, and Maa has already collected Rs 19.62 crore within four days of its release. Maa has also surpassed the lifetime haul of Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor's Loveyapa, which minted a total of Rs 8.85 crore in India during its run.
Kajol's last theatrical release was Salaam Venky (2022), which was a flop at the box office, minting Rs 3.36 crore in India nett. Her last major hit was Tanhaji (2020), which was led by Ajay Devgn and featured her in a supporting role. Tanhaji had raked in Rs 279.6 crore in India.
In recent years, the horror genre has gained significant traction in the Hindi film industry. In 2025 alone, four horror films hit the screens — Chhorii 2, The Bhootnii, Kapkapiii, and Maa. However, none managed to leave a lasting impression on the audience. Kapkapiii and The Bhootnii, both of which had theatrical releases unlike Chhorii 2, failed to perform well at the box office. Kapkapiii minted just Rs 1.78 crore in its lifetime run, while The Bhootnii wrapped up its run with a total of Rs 9.57 crore.
It appears that Maa is also struggling to make a significant impact at the box office. The film doesn't hold a candle when compared to Ajay Devgn-starrer Shaitaan, which released in 2024 and was a massive box office success. Shaitaan, which also featured Jyothika and R Madhavan, grossed Rs 213.55 crore worldwide. In its first four days alone, the film collected Rs 54 crore — far ahead of Maa's Rs 19.62 crore in the same timeframe.

If you only support action films, that's all filmmakers will make. And then you will have to watch only action movies in theatres. If you like all types of films and want to watch all types of films, go to theatres. Your support gives creators the freedom to tell diverse stories." He also shared how the audience's choices give power back to creators. 'Studios often command us to make a certain kind of film, and we have to follow. But when audiences back unique stories, it gives us the strength to create what's in our hearts.' About the film Many might think 'Sitaare Zameen Par' is just about sports. But at its heart, it's much more. The film tells the touching story of a basketball coach, played by Aamir Khan, who takes on the task of training a team of players with special needs. Alongside him is Genelia D'Souza, who adds her own warmth to the film. These young actors bring real heart to their roles and make the story shine.

Lutyens' Delhi To Get Sculpture District

New Delhi: New Delhi Municipal Council unveiled its cultural renaissance plan, beginning with the launch of a pilot project to transform the area from the Mandi House roundabout to the Copernicus Marg-Travancore House stretch till KG Marg into a sculpture art district. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The work will start in Oct-Nov. The stretches will showcase works by 15 distinguished artists, including Gujarat's Raghav Kaneria, Kerala's KS Radhakrishnan, Delhi's Ved Nair, Arun Pandit and Biman Bihari Das, and Jammu and Kashmir's Rajendra Tikku at selected spots with illumination, beautified surroundings and descriptive plaques in phase I. Works representing the legacies of the late Satish Gujral and Nagji Patel will also be present. The initiative aims to make notable artistic works accessible to the public, beyond the confines of museums and art galleries, said NDMC vice-chairman Kuljeet Chahal, who is working on the project from the beginning. "The initiative to promote art and culture in Lutyens' Delhi aligns with the Prime Minister's vision for Vikshit Bharat by 2047. The sculpture art district will span across key cultural landmarks, including Mandi House, National School of Drama, FICCI Auditorium, Shri Ram Centre, India Gate-National Gallery of Modern Art, Hyderabad House, Travancore Bhawan and Triveni Kala Sangam," he said. "Eight artists have given confirmation and large-scale sculptures, each ranging from 10-15 feet in height, will be installed," Chahal said. The sculptures will be made of bronze, stone or stainless steel with a lifespan of 100 years with limited maintenance. To ensure quality and contextual relevance, NDMC has formed an advisory committee under former NGMA chairman Harsh Vardhan Sharma. An art symposium will be held featuring both national and international sculptors, who will create artworks for a proposed sculpture park in Nehru Park. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It will also have creations of pioneering sculptor Ramkinkar Baij. Fifteen distinguished sculptors, including five from abroad, will take part in it. "Many of them are recipients of Padma and other national awards," said Chahal. The projects are components of NDMC's broader strategy to establish Lutyens' Delhi as an artistic centre, comparable to renowned global art cities such as Yorkshire and London, with an allocation of Rs 40 crore, 1% of the civic body's total budget. Several embassies have also expressed their willingness to participate in these initiatives. A national painting symposium, inviting 15 eminent painters from across the country, will also be invited to participate in a creative residency. The resulting artworks will be showcased in a curated exhibition and later displayed at various NDMC venues to enhance public spaces with rich visual storytelling. A site will be identified at Khan Market to help younger artists display and sell their artworks. The recently renovated Srijan Open Art Gallery in Nehru Park, to be inaugurated in July, will let young artists or national awardees display their work. NDMC is also working to sign an MoU to organise music, dance and folk art, and puppet and theatre shows. "Many forms of art are confined to galleries or closed spaces and are inaccessible to the common man. This public art project will bring creativity into open spaces where people can see, experience and connect with it," said Chahal. "It will also inspire students and the younger generation to learn, engage and take pride in India's cultural wealth. These efforts will significantly boost cultural tourism and create opportunities for global cultural exchange. "

Kajol Recalls Being Pregnant With Yug, Nysa: 'Ajay Changed Their Nappies Twice'

Last Updated: Kajol recalls the 'precious' time when she was pregnant with daughter Nysa Devgan. She calls herself 'calmer and cooler' when she was pregnant for the second time. Kajol has often called out the intrusive nature of the paparazzi culture, describing their behaviour as 'disrespectful and disturbing'. And in reaction to her interview recently, Kajol Devgan recalled her husband Ajay Devgn's remarks when he called her 'lucky' for being 'adaptable' and juggling the roles of a mother, a wife and their daughter Nysa Devgan's friend 'naturally'. But that's not to say that there are rigid gender roles at the Devgan household. Speaking exclusively to News18 Showsha, she says, 'I don't think we ever functioned that way. We share responsibilities. If I'm there, I do things. If he's there, he does it. It's as simple as that." But the one thing that both Kajol and Ajay are happy to not be doing are changing their children Nysa and Yug's nappies. 'The best thing is that our children don't need to get their nappies changed anymore. Thank god for that (laughs)," she tells us. Making a quirky revelation about Ajay, she remarks, 'When Nysa and Yug were babies, Ajay did change their nappies once or twice. He may tell you that he did it more than two times but I would've to disagree on that point." 'We've passed that stage and nobody needs to take that responsibility anymore. We're good. Today, it's more about supervision and talking to our children about their issues. It's much easier to swap those roles around," adds Kajol. As she engages in nappy talks, she reminisces the time when she came to know that she was pregnant for the first time. 'I wasn't surprised or overwhelmed," she says. For the unversed, Kajol gave birth to Nysa in April 2003. 'It was so precious. It was one of those feelings where I wanted to touch wood all the time and make sure that everything goes perfectly well because what was happening was so awesome. I felt like the magic of the universe was within me," she tells us. In her own words, she was 'pretty much chill' when she was pregnant with Yug, who she gave birth to in September 2010. The Maa and Do Patti actor recalls, 'It was still amazing but I was calmer and cooler about it. I wasn't upset or worried. I wasn't calling up the doctor every two minutes to ask, 'Oh god, this has happened! What do I do?' I knew what was going to happen and where things were going. I was well-aware about how I would progress in the third and the fourth months. I had a lot more fun when I was pregnant for the second time." But it was staying active that helped her deal with pregnancy pangs. 'I worked out a lot throughout both my pregnancies and that in itself gave me a huge boost. That helped me remain a part of the normal world. If I didn't do the regular things, I would feel very detached from it, I would feel like the world is going on a different path and I was on a different orbit. My second pregnancy, in particular, helped me remain a part of the general world," shares Kajol. First Published:
