You can't tell the story of New Orleans without its Black Catholics

The revelation that Pope Leo XIV has Louisiana Creole roots shines a light on a community of Catholics that has shaped New Orleans, from a famous Voodoo priestess to the self-proclaimed inventor of jazz. Indeed, it is impossible to speak of New Orleans without including the story of its Black Catholics.
Black Catholicism in the Crescent City can be traced all the way back to the 15th-century European colonization of West Africa, the homeland of many of those brought against their will centuries later to Louisiana as part of the slave trade.
'When we talk about Black Catholics, we had people from the Kingdom of Kongo who were Catholic even before they came here,' says Ansel Augustine, a New Orleans native and the assistant director of African American Affairs for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
In New Orleans, the Catholicism practiced by French and Spanish settlers melded with the Catholicism and spiritual practices of the African diaspora, Augustine says. But more than that, the city has been shaped by its Catholic community. Black Catholics played a role in some of the most important chapters of New Orleans history—from the origins of jazz to the earliest Black schools in America to the civil rights movement.
Then there's Mardi Gras, the weeks-long Carnival celebration before the solemn Catholic season of Lent. While the latter is often more explicitly associated with religion, Carnival—with its Black Masking Indians, second line parades, living 'baby dolls,' and skeletons—is a noticeably Afrocentric moment on the Church calendar.
Though not well known outside of New Orleans, these are the stories of the Catholics whose lives displayed their community's commitment to faith, justice, and innovation. How the 'Code Noir' shaped the birth of Black Catholicism
The earliest colonial rulers in Louisiana were the Catholic kingdoms of France and Spain—and they tended to view marriage and procreation in terms of class.
'There was no blanket term of 'Black.' We don't really see that until the Americans take over,' says David Robinson-Morris, a Black Catholic scholar and consultant in New Orleans with REImaginelution.
'The French had the Code Noir, which dictated how people of color could move about in the world and in society.'
Under these laws, interracial marriage was generally prohibited, mostly to perpetuate slavery and maintain an economic hierarchy. People of mixed race often intermarried within what became known as the 'Creole' community for reasons that became increasingly tied to wealth and status. Born in 1801, Marie Catherine Laveau was both a voodoo priestess and a devout Catholic. One workaround was the system of plaçage, which allowed white men of status to cohabitate and procreate with Black Creole women outside of recognized Catholic marriages. This system is what produced many of the multiracial Black Catholics who came to shape the city's early history.
Many well-known Catholics in New Orleans were of similar descent. Take the famous Voodoo priestess Marie Laveau, for example. She's best known for leading a robust, underground interreligious practice that helped preserve African spirituality in New Orleans. But she was also a lifelong practicing Catholic who had her children baptized in the Church.
Then there was the philanthropist Marie Couvent, who left her wealth to a Catholic school for the indigent founded in 1840. Later backed by the Creole educator and entrepreneur Thomy Lafon, it was the first community school devoted to Black children in the Deep South.
Ferdinand 'Jelly Roll Morton' Lamothe, another devout Catholic, helped pioneer the musical style later known as jazz in the city's red light district, also known as 'Storyville.' His earliest compositions came in the early 1900s, including the 'Jelly Roll Blues' and 'King Porter Stomp.' Devotion to education and living Catholic values
Others in New Orleans made their mark through explicitly religious service tied to the Church.
One standout was Henriette DeLille, a free-born woman who resisted the prevailing plaçage system. Her devout religious faith led her to not only reject her suitors, but also to found the Sisters of the Holy Family in 1836, an order of nuns dedicated to serving the poor and enslaved. They opened one of the nation's oldest senior care centers, Lafon Nursing Facility, in 1842 and one of the city's oldest schools, St. Mary's Academy, in 1867.
'Mother Henriette has left a legacy that can't be disputed,' says Alicia Costa, who has served as superior general of the Holy Family Sisters since 2022. 'We're still working and Henriette is really our model.'
DeLille is now on the path to sainthood, making her one of the most emblematic figures among New Orleans Black Catholics and the larger region, who invoke her name weekly in an official prayer distributed by the local archdiocese.
St. Katharine Drexel, a white Philadelphia heiress who founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, opened the nation's first Black Catholic institution of higher education, Xavier University of Louisiana, in 1925. It has since gone on to produce some of the nation's most prominent Black achievers, and more Black medical professionals than almost any other school in America
The Josephites, another Catholic religious community founded to serve African Americans, also has a long history in New Orleans. Their priests and religious brothers have served in the city since 1909 and founded a historic all-boys Black Catholic high school, St. Augustine, in 1951.
'The Josephites served in the Greater New Orleans Urban League, even as president, and fought for equal housing and job opportunities,' says Roderick Coates, a Josephite priest in Louisiana. 'They helped found Christopher Housing for seniors and low-income people [and] served on the Board of Education for New Orleans Public Schools.' Civil rights and the Catholic Church
Catholic activism characterized much of the city's presence in the Black liberation struggle, especially out of Tremé—the nation's oldest Black neighborhood.
The civil rights attorney A.P. Tureaud, Sr., battled Jim Crow from his office at the headquarters of the Knights of Peter Claver and Ladies Auxiliary, a Black Catholic fraternal order of which he was a member.
A mile away, local restaurateurs Leah and Edgar 'Dooky' Chase II—both Catholic—hosted Martin Luther King, Jr., and other movement activists for closed-door planning meetings. President Norman C. Homer Plessy—of the landmark Supreme Court case Plessy v. Ferguson that upheld Louisiana's law on 'separate but equal' facilities—resisted segregation as a Catholic connected to the city's most historic Black church, St. Augustine.
Norman C. Francis, a Black Catholic and dean of men at Xavier University of Louisiana, also helped play a role in the Civil Rights Movement, offering a dormitory as a hub for the Freedom Riders in 1961 amid white supremacist violence in the city.
'All of this is connected with our Black Catholic heritage and our faith, telling us to use spaces, places, gifts, and strength to create a more just society,' says Augustine.
While Hurricane Katrina in 2005 reshaped much of New Orleans and its tangible Black Catholic heritage, the city has remained resilient.
'Remember, New Orleans is older than the country. It is a city in America, but it's not an American city,' says Robinson-Morris.
'We're talking about African culture, literally from the motherland, colliding with Afro-Caribbean culture. We're talking about French culture and Native American and Spanish culture, and all of the various ways those cultures are expressed.'
It is precisely this sort of cultural and ethnic admixture that has come to bear with the new Pope Leo XIV, whose ancestry exhibits a typical New Orleans ambiguity that is still American in its own way.
While he has not publicly spoken on the details of his mother's Black and Catholic Creole beginnings in New Orleans, it is clear that the background of the first American pope is as complex—and as providential—as the country's own genesis.
'Long before he was the pope, when he was just a priest and a cardinal, he mentioned that one of the reasons to a vocation was because all the neighborhood priests were always in and out of his house because they liked his mom's cooking,' says Jari Honora, the genealogist who discovered the pope's Creole roots.
'Now we know why, because his mom—both maternal and paternal—was straight out of New Orleans.' Of course, the issue came down to the latter's inclusion as some still fail to believe that Black culture can be connected to the LGBTQIA movement — yes, homophobia on various levels unfortunately still exists within our community. However, on the eve of commemorating the Stonewall Riots Anniversary (June 28) that sparked Pride Month altogether, we wanted to take a brief look at the Black drag queen that pioneered the movement from its violent inception to marching in the very first Pride Day Parade: the late Marsha P. A Black transgender woman and revolutionary figure in LGBTQ+ history, Johnson's contributions transcend time, inspiring generations to fight for equality. Marsha played a pivotal role in the Stonewall Riots of 1969, a watershed moment for LGBTQ+ rights. Her presence at the uprising—widely regarded as the spark that ignited modern Pride movements—was marked by defiance and solidarity. At a time when queer individuals were criminalized and marginalized, Johnson stood on the frontline, embodying the fight against systemic oppression. Her courage underpinned a broader struggle for freedom, reminding the world that Black queer voices are an integral part of social progress. Beyond Stonewall, Johnson co-founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) alongside Sylvia Rivera. This organization provided shelter and support to homeless LGBTQ+ youth, particularly trans people of color. Through STAR, Marsha championed the rights of those overlooked by mainstream society, offering safe spaces and a voice to the most vulnerable. Her impact endures as a intersectional icon—her identity as a Black, transgender individual highlights the struggles and contributions of people living at the intersections of multiple forms of discrimination. Today, Marsha's legacy fuels Pride Month celebrations and underscores the necessity of equity in both LGBTQ+ and racial justice movements. Johnson's life was tragically cut short in 1992 under suspicious circumstances, yet her memory remains a beacon of hope and action. The 'we' is Black women, of course, who dubbed the British-Nigerian actor as a certified Internet Boyfriend long before his starring turn in this summer's first big blockbuster. After captivating audiences as Franklin Saint in Snowfall, Idris is shifting gears — literally — into high-octane territory with his leading role in F1, the Formula 1 racing film from director Joseph Kosinski and producer/ star Brad Pitt. Whether he's embodying a South Central kingpin or donning a racing suit opposite Hollywood heavyweights, Idris brings depth, precision, and a quiet confidence that continues to set him apart. And as Unbothered's very own Christa Eduafo found out when she sat down with him recently in New York City, the actor is well aware that his Black female fanbase bet big on Damson Idris stock early. 'I can't wait for them to go on this journey with me throughout my career,' Idris said with a smile. Here, Idris opens up about the evolution of his career, his mother's influence as both an anchor and a humbling presence (African moms stay on brand), and the unwavering support he receives from the fans who've been riding with him since day one. He also teases his upcoming role in Children of Blood and Bone, the hotly anticipated fantasy epic based on Tomi Adeyemi's bestselling novel. Unbothered: You're starring in what's going to be the blockbuster of the summer. Walk me through when you found out you were going to be in F1. Was it shock? Was it readiness? How did that feel? Damson Idris: Man, I was in Turks and Caicos. So I was on vacation, I was looking at the sunset, and then I got a phone call: 'Hey, do you want to be a Formula 1 driver?' And I lost my mind. I just screamed to the heavens. This is a part that I prayed for. I dreamed of this, so being able to accomplish it, and to be at this place today where I believe we made a brilliant movie, is a dream come true. In a previous interview, you said you downloaded the Formula One game and named your player, Joshua Pierce, which is the name of your character in the film. So do you manifest often? DI: 100%. I understand how powerful we are as beings and with the characters that I play, I do believe that what's mine is mine. So it's really a feeling that I tend to chase. With Snowfall, I really wanted to work in the States and I loved those kinds of gangster movies, like Goodfellas, American Gangster and the like. And then with this movie, I really wanted to play an athlete because of my football background. But I was also ready and prepared for a movie that I believe was going to reach every corner of the world. So when this opportunity came, I knew it was mine and I wanted to do a really good job. So hopefully I made everyone proud. You were amazing in the film. I'm a big manifestation person as well, and it's just about knowing, just being certain, and that's really it. So between Joshua Pierce and Snowfall's Franklin, you play characters that have a lot of aura to them. So I was wondering, would you say you have aura? DI: I just learned what aura is the other day. Do I have aura? I don't know. No, I'm the worst person to ask. I'll never admit that I have aura. I'll never admit it, but I don't know. Alright, yeah, I got a little, tiny, little sprinkle of aura [laughs]. ' [My mum] is my biggest fan. When the movie comes out, the opinion that's gonna matter most to me is hers. damson idris ' You said recently that you're most excited for your mom to see this film, and that she would call to check on your safety when you were on set. What were those calls like? DI: Just her screaming in Yoruba, 'you better be safe!' She's my biggest fan. So when the movie comes out, you know, the opinion that's gonna matter most to me is hers. Your character in the film, Joshua, has such a beautifully close relationship with his mother. And I know you mention all the time that you have one with your own. So I was wondering, how does your mom keep you grounded as your star is rising? DI: I call her all the time. Every day I call her. On this career [journey] that I'm on, you know, you spend so much time in the back of a car alone, alone in a hotel room, you know, alone on a plane, so to have someone that I can call that just constantly reminds me of where I came from is so important to me. And my mom is that person. That's so valuable to have. I'm Ghanaian, so African parents can be our biggest cheerleaders, but they can also humble us lovingly. So I was wondering if you have an example of a time that your mom lovingly brought you back down to earth. DI: Oh my gosh, when I first started acting, working in a theater is this revered thing in the UK. So I would be doing plays, and my mom would come and watch the plays, and she'd be like, 'yes, theater is okay, but when are you going to be on EastEnders or Hollyoaks? Because my mom loves soaps. So in my head, funny enough, through that was how I said to myself, Man, I need to be on a screen. So, yeah, I guess my mom was a huge motivator for that. She was underwhelmed by my theater parts. ' I'm grateful that [Black women] support my work. I can't wait for them to go on this journey with me throughout my career. I always want to make Black women proud. damson idris ' You have a lot of Black female fans. You're a little bit of a heartthrob. What has that attention been like? Is that a new experience, something you pay attention to or is it just kind of background noise? DI: I don't pay attention to it but I'm grateful that they support my work and that they support my aura. I can't wait for them to go on this journey with me throughout my career. You know, I always want to make Black women proud. I was raised by one. Can you give a little message to your Black women fans? DI: To my gorgeous Black women out there who are supporting me, thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I can't wait for you to watch F1. I promise you, Joshua has aura [laughs]. ' You know exactly how we felt when we walked out of Black Panther? That's how we're going to feel with [ Children of Blood and Bone ]. We put everything into it. damson idris ' Children of Blood and Bone is next for you. It just wrapped. That was a stacked cast. You worked with a lot of members of the diaspora there. What was the most exciting part about being a part of that film? DI: So many of them are my friends that I've known for so long. In passing on this journey, we always say the same thing to each other: 'When are we going to work with each other?' So I tip my hat to Paramount and Gina Prince-Bythewood for assembling a juggernaut of a cast. We spent six months in Cape Town filming and we just wrapped. Every day, a new heavyweight would come in and just prove why they exist. You know, from Idris to Viola to Chiwetel to Regina to Cynthia. I could just say their first names and you know what time it is. But also just watching a lot of us, younger actors, find our way and own our power too. Tosin Cole and Amandla Stenberg, and Thuso Mbedu, our lead, who I just think is such a beautiful actress. I can't wait for her career to blossom too. So, I just feel really blessed. Lashana Lynch, Zackary Momoh, there was a so much great energy on set. You know exactly how we felt when we walked out of Black Panther? That's how we're going to feel with this picture. We put everything into it. We showed so much respect to Africa, and we showed so much respect to the story too.

Ashanti Talks Docuseries With Nelly: 'We Got All Of Our Big Arguments Out In 2012'

We are in an era of nostalgia, and as a millennial who mainlined every movie and TV show we are now revisiting, I am not mad at it. And thanks to the current early 2000s renaissance, at this year's American Black Film Festival (ABFF), I had the opportunity to do something teen Kathleen wouldn't have even dared to dream: I interviewed Ashanti on stage in front of a room full of people who were just as in awe of her as I was. Ashanti was everything to 2000s pop and R&B — and to me. She wasn't just a voice on the radio or a hot girl on MTV (I grew up in Canada so it was MuchMusic for us), she was the moment. For millennial Black girls like me, she was soft and powerful at the same time, a woman who could sing about heartbreak one minute and independence the next, all while rocking rhinestones, low-rise jeans, and that signature baby hair with unapologetic confidence. She held her own next to Ja Rule and Fat Joe, yet her solo tracks like ' Foolish ' and ' Rain on Me ' gave us the soundtrack to first crushes, late-night MSN messenger confessions (real ones remember!), and our earliest lessons in love. While other artists chased trends, Ashanti was the sound. Her melodies, harmonies, and pen game helped define that sweet spot between hip-hop grit and R&B vulnerability. She didn't just belong to the charts; she belonged to us. So it's safe to say that getting to interview her and get a sneak peak of her reality docuseries with her husband, another 2000s icon, Nelly, was a dream come true. The duo — who broke up and got back together and now are married with a baby — have come together for the ultimate collaboration: their new docuseries, Nelly & Ashanti: We Belong Together (which hits Peacock today, Thursday, June 26). ' I never saw myself doing a docuseries, reality TV or anything like that... But my husband [Nelly] was like, 'look, this is what I think we should do.' ashanti at abff ' The panel, titled ' The Remix: Ashanti's New Chapter of Love, Life & Legacy ', started with the teaser trailer for the show and showcased why Ashanti and Nelly decided to do a reality series now. "I never saw myself doing a docuseries, reality TV or anything like that," Ashanti told the packed crowd in Miami. "I had been asked for years to do it, to have the cameras [follow] my sisters, stuff with my family, stuff by myself and I was like, 'nah I'm good, thank you.' But my husband was like, 'look, this is what I think we should do.'" Ashanti laughed along with the audience. The conversation unpacked Ashanti's expanded role in the docuseries — as star, producer, mother, and creative force. Alongside NBCU programming executive Brittinee Royes and the show's executive producer and showrunner, Oji Singletary, Ashanti spoke about how this chapter aligns with her ongoing career evolution. She's a mom now and while she's still singing, acting, and Peacock's eight‐episode docuseries offers an intimate portrayal of Nelly and Ashanti's renewed romance. After reuniting at a 2021 Verzuz event, the couple quietly married in December 2023 and welcomed their son KK in mid‑2024. From the first episode, I couldn't help but smile seeing them together again. There's a comfort in watching two artists you grew up with find each other again, this time with more maturity and less ego. They're grown. They're flawed. And watching them navigate that — in a long-distance marriage, with a baby, and careers still unfolding — felt real in a way you don't often expect from a celebrity docuseries. And when I asked Ashanti if she was worried about showing the reality of their relationship to the world, she didn't flinch. She said she wasn't because they don't fight in the same way after their reconciliation. "Yeah, it's crazy. I think we got all of our big arguments out in, like, 2012," Ashanti said to laughter. "Those were the big, big ones and I think we kind of fizzled that out." One argument that is teased in the series is the couple's disagreement over Nelly's choice to perform at Donald Trump's inauguration ball. The series doesn't dance around the controversy, which saw Nelly face backlash for seemingly aligning himself with Trump (he defended the choice by saying it was "not political" back in January). Ashanti shouldn't have to answer for her husband's actions, but by nature of being married, his actions do reflect on her as well. The series shows Ashanti confronting Nelly about the decision and doesn't shy away from the conflict. As much as I disagree with Nelly's choice (and let's make it clear that I absolutely do), I liked that the show was candid about it, and that it showed Ashanti holding her own and standing up for herself and her reputation. Aside from that storyline, the series combines a blend of candid interviews, real‑life and tour footage, and personal anecdotes, resulting in a surprisingly candid showcase of Ashanti and Nelly's chemistry. My personal favorite moment is something extremely mundane: the couple go shopping for mattresses. Nelly can't wrap his head around the exorbitant prices and Ashanti is just giggling along as she tries to convince her man that a million-dollar price tag on a mattress is normal. "We wanted it to feel real," Ashanti said. "We want people to see the funny sides and the things that people don't see on Instagram." In moments like these, couple is portrayed as warm and genuine, with their goofy dynamic and their commitment to each other coming through loud and clear. During the panel, both Royes and Singletary chimed in about the specialness of that simple moment and shared what else in the series sets it apart from other reality TV. "It's Ashanti's first motherhood experience and then cameras are here, boom, we're shooting," Singletary said. "I'm super proud of her, I'm super proud of Nelly and I think everyone is going to appreciate it." "For me as a woman, as a wife, as a mother, I'm like there are nuances to this story that the people need to see," Royes said. "And I was so grateful that [Ashanti] was open to being honest and being vulnerable about [juggling motherhood and career]. You guys will see in the first episode and I related because I remember going back to work after having a baby. And you really struggle." His face is blurred out. On the decision to not show KK's face, Ashanti said, "There was no hesitation. I knew I was not going to show my son... I'm kind of a mama bear already, very protective. I didn't want to show my son to world yet. I haven't even posted him on Instagram or anything like that. Those moments are very sacred to me. We'll make the decision on when he's ready to pop out and show out," She said laughing. By the end of our conversation, I felt oddly emotional. And as for the series, We Belong Together isn't a love story trying to convince us everything's perfect. It's about starting over, about timing finally aligning, and about healing in the public eye. We've watched Ashanti go from mixtapes to motherhood, and right now, we're watching a new beginning. If you go to the series for nostalgia, you'll get it. If you go for authenticity, it's got that too. And during our panel at ABFF, Ashanti, Singletary and Royes reminded everyone that sometimes the greatest remix isn't a new beat — it's a whole new perspective.
