Bernalillo County Youth Services Center at max capacity for juvenile males

Yahoo22-02-2025
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) –The Bernalillo County Youth Services Center is at max capacity meaning it is out of room for any teens who get arrested for serious crimes and they don't know how long it will take to change that.

Within the past two weeks, the county's youth service director says there's been a 30 % jump in the number of males taken into custody. 'So, we're at max capacity for our male residents, and that's 66 beds,' said Tamera Marcantel, Bernco Youth Services Center, director.
Unable to take in any new young men and with only six beds available for young women, the Bernalillo County Youth Services Center is now facing a critical capacity issue with more than 90% of their 78 total beds taken.
'I know it's been quite some time. Just last year, our average daily population was only 54. And I can tell you that before the pandemic, our average daily population was, like, in the 20s. So it, it has increased significantly over the past few years,' said Marcantel.
The center said it's unclear how long the latest capacity issue could last saying it's dependent on the outcome of each person's case in the court system.
Each juvenile offender's stay can range from two days to well over two years. 'We're trying to figure out, is the data going to continue to trend in this manner? Are we just seeing the repercussions of the pandemic and the system is now catching back up?' said Marcantel.
If more space is needed the county says it can double-bunk residents but that could affect safety issues including the ratio of the number of guards to the number of residents.
Meanwhile, they said some solutions can start on the outside.
'What can we do collectively to keep them out of detention? Because really the last place we want our youth is to be in detention. So what can we do collectively to help prevent that from ever being part of their path or their trajectory,' said Greg Perez, deputy county manager for health and public safety.
The county is also looking to hire around 31 more youth program officers. They'll have a rapid hiring event next Saturday at the Youth Service Center on Second Street.
The county was also forced to shut down intake for new juvenile suspects temporarily back in June but that lasted for just a few days.

Lavender in the Village Festival and more The incident began on July 9 in the morning in northwest Albuquerque. A city bus driven by 41-year-old David Gabaldon was making its rounds around 6:30 AM when he picked up two passengers along Coors Boulevard. One of the passengers had complaints about the driver's punctuality. The older passenger continued to gripe about the service, prompting Gabaldon to stop the bus near Coors and Hanover. He demanded that the older man get off the bus or he wouldn't continue the route, causing annoyance among the other passengers. Raymond Coan then stepped into the argument: Coan: 'When you're saying the rest of us need to sit down and shut up, that's not the best f****** thing to say.'Gabaldon: 'So what do you want me to say?' The situation escalated quickly, with Coan throwing the first punch. A struggle broke out, and Gabaldon grabbed pepper spray, using it against Coan. The two eventually separated, with Coan retreating to the back of the bus while Gabaldon left in anger. Video footage from the bus shows Coan watching Gabaldon before exiting from the back. The fight continued outside, where Gabaldon was seen reaching for what appeared to be a knife and stabbing Coan at least twice on camera. Coan was seen backing away, cursing, but Gabaldon pursued him, even as Coan attempted to step back. According to court documents, the fight continued in front of a gas station until Coan went down. Officers arrived minutes later, and Coan was taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital, but did not survive. Gabaldon was arrested and now faces first-degree murder charges. A judge has ordered that he be held in jail until his trial, and a grand jury has indicted him on Thursday. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Suspect at large after shooting on University of New Mexico campus leaves 1 dead, 1 injured

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A deadly shooting has prompted the University of New Mexico to issue a shelter in place on its Albuquerque central campus on Friday morning. Officials said UNM police received a report of gunshots fired at Casas del Rio (Gila) student housing center, located at 420 Redondo Dr NE, on Friday. Responding officers discovered two individuals had been shot. One victim died, and the other sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect remains at large and may still be on campus, UNM said in the alert. A Lobo Alert announcing the shelter in place was sent out on social media around 6:17 a.m. local time, and officials asked people to avoid the central campus, which was closed. 'Subject with a firearm is at large, police are on scene. If on campus, continue to shelter in place,' reads the latest alert, sent just before 7 a.m. local time. The university first sent an alert about the shooting around 3:27 a.m. Multiple law enforcement agencies are on scene and actively investigating. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call UNMPD at 505-277-2241. A student housing building was also the site of a shooting at the University of New Mexico in 2022, when a group of students attempted assault a basketball player from New Mexico State University, allegedly as revenge for a previous argument. Court documents indicated that the UNM students pointed a gun and attacked the athlete, after which he fired back and struck one of his attackers fatally.
