Sheriff: Livingston Parish deputy accused of driving boat while intoxicated demoted
Cedric Brignac, 42, was charged with operating a vessel while impaired. LDWF said agents who were patrolling Lake Maurepas in Livingston Parish encountered him a few times before he almost crashed into a wooden barrier. He also had slurred speech.
The incident report stated that Brignac's boat was near the agents. They could smell alcohol coming from his direction. The agents also saw beer cans scattered throughout the boat.
According to the incident report, Brignac admitted to drinking 'about four Natural Lights' and continued to sway during field sobriety tests conducted onshore.

Sheriff Jason Ard confirmed Brignac, formerly a Major in the Training Division, has been demoted to Captain. He was also cited for a first offense of operating a vessel while intoxicated.
'The off-duty incident was self-reported by Brignac (Training Division). The matter was turned over to the District Attorney's Office for processing – just as all other cases are,' Ard said.

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit ruled Friday that Louisiana's law to display the Ten Commandments in classrooms is unconstitutional. Louisiana became the first state in the nation to pass the bill requiring public schools and universities to display the Ten Commandments in the 2024 regular legislative session. The law stated that it would be displayed with a large, readable font on an 11-by-14-inch poster or framed document. 'We strongly disagree with the Fifth Circuit's affirmance of an injunction preventing five Louisiana parishes from implementing HB71. We will immediately seek relief from the full Fifth Circuit and, if necessary, the U.S. Supreme Court,' Attorney General Liz Murrill said in a statement. 'The Ten Commandments are the foundation of our laws—serving both an educational and historical purpose in our classrooms. I fully support Attorney General Murrill's decision to seek an en banc panel to review the decision,' said Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry. 11 arrested after St. Helena Parish jail inmate's overdose death
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Eleven people were arrested in connection with the fentanyl-related death of an inmate in St. Helena Parish. Inmate Rogers B. Vernon, 40, died from an overdose in April. The St. Helena Parish Sheriff's Office said the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office was asked to assist in the investigation. Investigators learned that contraband had been brought into the jail. Deputies said 10 inmates and one civilian were arrested in the case. 'The St. Helena Parish Sheriff's Office would like to thank Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office, who, in cooperation with our deputies, worked tirelessly in assisting with this investigation. For the safety of those housed at our jail, additional measures have been implemented to prevent contraband from entering our facility. We would also like to extend our condolences to the family of Mr. Vernon- our prayers are with you all,' the sheriff's office said. Brandon Burge, 38, was charged with two counts of distribution of Schedule II CDS and one count each of introduction of contraband and second-degree murder. K-9 helps nab Louisiana man on drug and gun charges during traffic stop
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A traffic stop on Tuesday, June 10, ended with the arrest of an Assumption Parish man on drug and gun charges. Torianno Adarryl Howard Jr., 21, of Belle Rose, was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession with intent to distribute synthetic marijuana, sale, distribution, or possession of a legend drug without a prescription or order prohibited, illegal carrying of weapons in the presence of controlled dangerous substances, possession of drug paraphernalia, no motor vehicle inspection tag, no proof of liability insurance, illegal window tint and failure to dim headlights. The Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office said the stop took place Tuesday, close to LA 308 and Massey Lane, after a traffic violation. A deputy spoke with Howard and had a K-9 perform an open-air sniff of his vehicle. APSO said the K-9 'alerted positive for the presence of controlled dangerous substances.' A search of the vehicle uncovered assorted drug paraphernalia, a gun, synthetic marijuana and marijuana. After his arrest, Howard was booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center.
