DC 33 wraps up voting on tentative deal with Parker administration, results expected to be released Monday

CBS Newsa day ago
Residents in Philadelphia's Spring Garden neighborhood put out their trash Sunday night confident that their Monday pickup would happen. But will that be the case in the days ahead?
A week and a half ago, AFSCME District Council 33, with about 9,000 members, reached a tentative three-year agreement with the city of Philadelphia. The deal includes a 3% raise for each year. That agreement needs to be ratified by a majority of the union's members to go into effect. Over the past week, through Sunday afternoon, members voted in person at union headquarters in University City.
The union represents sanitation workers and other employees across multiple city departments, from police dispatchers and crossing guards to maintenance workers at Philadelphia International Airport.
All votes will be counted at the District 33 headquarters on Monday. That's when results are expected to be announced. In the meantime, many residents are left to wait and hope for the best.
Amber Daddezio and AJ Burton saw the trash mounds around Graduate Hospital and in North Philadelphia, where they live. While they hate to think about another potential halt to pickups, they also understand.
"It makes me nervous," Daddezio said.
"They're not paid nearly enough for this incredibly important hard work that they're doing every single day," Burton said.
It's a similar sentiment from Scout Woodhouse, who's willing to sacrifice a few more days if it means a fair deal for those who help keep the city running.
"They are the backbone of the city. They help operations and daily functions, and they deserve more," Woodhouse said.

Social Media Wonders Why Trump Suddenly Cares About Washington Commanders' Team Name

President Donald Trump's latest obsession seems to be changing the name of Washington's NFL team back to the racist one. Trump announced on Sunday that 'the Washington 'Whatever's' should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team' and claimed that 'there is a big clamoring for this.' A short time later, he threatened to prevent the team from building a new stadium in D.C. if the name wasn't changed back to the offensive one. 'I may put a restriction on them that if they don't change the name back to the original 'Washington Redskins,' and get rid of the ridiculous moniker, 'Washington Commanders,' I won't make a deal for them to build a Stadium in Washington,' he said on his TruthSocial platform. Although the team dropped its racist team name in 2020 after years of criticism and chose to call itself the Commanders before the 2022 season, Trump said earlier this month that the new name 'doesn't have the same ring.' But many people on social media were skeptical about Trump's sudden obsession with seemingly old news. Besides making the demand for the Washington Commanders name change, Trump's also been making other plays for people's attention, including: Renewing the lie that he did not solicit and accept help from Russia in his 2016 campaign Releasing FBI files on slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., despite the objection of King's family Posting a bizarre artificial intelligence-generated video of Barack Obama being arrested in the Oval Office But many people on social media suspected that there's a specific reason the president and his administration have been desperate to, as former White House adviser Stephen Bannon once put it, 'flood the zone with shit.' That reason? Here's a hint: It's spelled E-p-s-t-e-i-n. Actual headlines have been dominated by questions about convicted sex offender and Trump buddy Jeffrey Epstein ever since Trump's Department of Justice and FBI declared that Epstein's previously hyped client list doesn't exist. Many MAGA followers have felt duped by the DOJ and FBI's conclusions, and Trump's insulting remarks to people wanting to see what may be in the Epstein investigation files haven't helped sway them. Will Trump's attempt to create distractions work? Here's what people on social media have to say about it: To distract from his current catastrophe, Trump's been ranting that the Washington Commanders must be forced to resume calling themselves the Redskins. Let's split the difference and call them the Washington Epsteins — Paul Rudnick (@PaulRudnickNY) July 21, 2025 Now, do the Epstein files. — Be A King (@BerniceKing) July 21, 2025 So, people have been asking me if the term 'redskin' is RACIST and OFFENSIVE. My response? Release the Epstein files now Trump you stupid pedophile. — Lakota Man (@LakotaMan1) July 21, 2025 The thing about the Washington Redskins stuff is that Donald Trump is a pedophile, a rapist, and a human trafficker, and his party and his base don't give a shit. — John Pavlovitz (@johnpavlovitz) July 20, 2025 The craziest thing about the Washington Commanders/Redskins name change noise is that Donald Trump is in the Epstein files. — Jo (@JoJoFromJerz) July 21, 2025 The only real conclusion to be drawn from Trump playing culture war hits like 'bring the Redskins back' is that he is terrified of the Epstein stuff and terrified of losing his base by refusing to release the files. — Sonny Bunch (@SonnyBunch) July 20, 2025 "Redskins" is trending for one reason."Epstein" keeps running out of distractions and is forced to go back to his greatest hits: — John Fugelsang (@JohnFugelsang) July 21, 2025 There's ALWAYS a tweet.(Yesterday, Trump threatened to block the Washington Commanders' stadium deal unless they change the name back to 'Redskins'.) — Republicans against Trump (@RpsAgainstTrump) July 21, 2025 🚨 Trump is now demanding we bring back racist team wants the Washington Redskins and Cleveland Indians restored 'IMMEDIATELY.'This man is in the middle of an Epstein scandal, a border meltdown, and collapsing poll numbers—and he's frothing at the mouth about… — Brian Allen (@allenanalysis) July 20, 2025 Related... Hunter Biden blames Joe's debate performance on Ambien

Hunter Biden is blaming his father's poor 2024 presidential debate performance on Ambien that he said doctors prescribed to help him deal with jet lag. In a podcast interview released Monday, the onetime first son said former President Joe Biden was likely exhausted from the rigors of world travel ahead of the June clash that led to his pulling the plug on his reelection campaign. 'He flew around the world. He's 81 years old. He's tired,' Hunter Biden said. 'They give him Ambien to be able to sleep, and he gets up on the stage and looks like a deer in the headlights.' Joe Biden's doctors never listed Ambien, a common sleep aid, as a medication he was given. The interview with YouTube personality Andrew Callaghan was released on the one-year anniversary of Joe Biden ending his bid to win four more years in the White House, a decision that came amid disastrous political fallout from the debate. Hunter Biden also denied any involvement in the discovery of a baggie of cocaine that was left in a White House security cubby in 2023, insisting he has been sober since 2019 after a well-documented battle with cocaine and other substance abuse. 'I have not touched a drop of alcohol or a drug, and I'm incredibly proud of that,' he said. FBI Director Kash Patel has named the incident as one of several Biden-era investigations that he intends to revisit. President Trump publicly said he suspected Hunter Biden could be responsible, although no evidence has ever surfaced. Hunter Biden was pardoned by his father last December, just a few weeks before Joe Biden left the White House in January. He was facing prison time after being convicted on federal gun charges related to his drug use in June 2024 and later pleading guilty to tax charges. _____

Jimmy Kimmel attends anti-Trump rally as president predicts his cancellation

Jimmy Kimmel is taking time out of his vacation to protest against President Donald Trump amid 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert's' cancellation and the president's prediction Kimmel is on the chopping block, too. The 57-year-old host shared a photo of himself at an anti-Trump protest with his family just days after the president threatened his show could be 'next.' 'I absolutely love that Colbert got fired. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next,' Trump wrote on Truth Social post. 'Has even less talent than Colbert!' Trump also took a shot at late-night host Jimmy Fallon, adding he is 'the Moron on NBC who ruined the once great Tonight Show.' Kimmel responded to the president's threats with a pointed caption writing, 'May every day be another wonderful secret,' he said referencing the letter Trump allegedly wrote to Jeffrey Epstein. In the post, Kimmel is photographed with his wife and children as they hold signs that include the phrases, 'Don't bend the knee, 'Make America Good Again' and 'I wish we had a better president!' This all comes amid the abrupt announcement that Stephen Colbert's 'The Late Show' would end next year after 10 seasons. The ending of the longtime show raised the eyebrows of many given the timing. Earlier this month, Paramount settled a $16 million settlement with Trump after the president accused the network of giving a flatting edit to a '60 Minutes' interview with Kamala Harris. Paramount released a statement insisting that ending 'The Late Show' is 'purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.' The network also said the decision was 'not related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.' _____
