In this novel, experimental theater crosses moral, legal lines

Experimental theater of the early 1970s had an undeniable allure. Immersive long before 'Sleep No More,' it blurred the boundary between self, show and world. For Allison, who attends the kind of cosseting school with a curfew and a 'dorm matron,' it promises more: 'Change me,' she silently begs her first such show as she stands on a seedy Times Square sidewalk. 'Form me. Teach me who and what I am.' 'Flashout' is the second novel from New York Times theater critic and culture reporter Alexis Soloski, and it unspools across two timelines. One follows Allison's youth in a past-its-prime troupe with a predatory, narcissistic leader. In the other, it's 1997 in the San Fernando Valley, as a wry high school theater teacher with a very healthy work-life balance is always looking over her shoulder, wondering, 'Had she been caught? Found? Finally?'
