Saudi authorities intensify efforts against drug traffickers and dealers
Border Guard patrols in Al-Dayer, Jazan region, arrested eight Yemenis trying to smuggle in a total of 240 kg of qat in multiple separate attempts. The same sector also saw authorities thwart the attempted smuggling of 42 kg of hashish.
In another attempt, land patrols in Al-Dayer prevented the smuggling in of 54 kg of hashish, 343,000 tablets regulated for medical use, and 2,000 amphetamine tablets.
In Jazan's Fifa governorate, security patrols arrested two Ethiopians smuggling 35 kg of qat.
In Al-Raboah, Asir region, Border Guard patrols arrested five Yemenis and Ethiopians smuggling 100 kg of qat and also prevented the smuggling in of a further 280 kg of qat.
Also in Asir, a Sudanese resident was arrested with 125 kg of qat in Dhahran Al-Janoub, and an Ethiopian with 46 kg of qat in Al-Farsha.
Security patrols in the Eastern Province arrested an Indian resident for selling heroin.
Patrols from the General Directorate of Mujahideen in Jazan arrested two Ethiopians selling hashish, amphetamine, and regulated pills.
The General Directorate of Narcotics Control arrested four citizens in the Eastern Province for the possession of 108 kg of hashish and for selling regulated tablets.
Officials also arrested two Yemenis in Najran for selling amphetamines, locally known as shabu.
Preliminary legal procedures were completed in all cases, and all seized items have been handed to the relevant authorities, the SPA reported.
Authorities have urged the public to report drug smuggling or sales by calling 911 in Makkah, Riyadh, and the Eastern Province, or 999 in other regions. Reports can also be submitted confidentially to the General Directorate of Narcotics Control via email at [email protected] or by calling 995.

Saudi transport officials conduct more than 317,000 inspections in June
RIYADH: The Saudi Transport General Authority carried out more than 317,000 inspections covering land, sea, and rail transport activities across the Kingdom in June, identifying 51,143 offenses. Of these, 27,756 were detected through field inspections and 23,387 through automated monitoring, while all efforts involved collaboration with relevant authorities, the Saudi Press Agency reported. Compliance rates were robust, with land transport achieving 94 percent compliance and maritime transport recording an impressive 99 percent. These figures highlight licensees' strong adherence to the rules and regulations. Makkah region reported the highest number of offenses at 21,000, followed by Riyadh at 13,000, Eastern Region at 4,508, and Madinah at 3,557. Turkish Police Seize 825 Kg of Heroin, Says Interior Minister
Police have seized 825 kilogrammes of heroin and arrested 30 people in a string of raids largely in southern Türkiye, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on Wednesday. Straddling Asia and Europe, Türkiye lies on several major smuggling routes and is the main entry point for heroin on the European market, according to AFP. "In operations across seven provinces, centred in (the southern city of) Adana.. we seized 825 kilogrammes (1,818 pounds) of heroin and arrested 30 suspected drug traffickers," he wrote on X. In a simultaneous operation, police raided 38 different addresses in Adana, Hakkari, Hatay, Istanbul, Van, Diyarbakir, and Mersin, seizing unlicensed weapons and "a large quantity" of digital material, he said. Heroin continues to be the most commonly used illicit opioid within the European Union and "increasingly relies on maritime routes and in particular the use of global container traffic and ferries" departing from Türkiye, Europol's 2024 analysis of the EU drug market said. The report said Turkish criminal networks continue to dominate the wholesale trafficking of heroin to the European market.

Syria's Interior Ministry Stresses Cooperation with Saudi Arabia to Combat Crime, Terrorism
The Syrian Ministry of Interior has confirmed it is coordinating closely with Saudi Arabia on joint security operations aimed at tackling organized crime and terrorist threats. Many of these efforts, officials say, remain deliberately out of the public eye for security reasons. Speaking to Asharq Al-Awsat, Interior Ministry spokesperson Nour al-Din al-Baba revealed that cooperation between Damascus and Riyadh spans intelligence sharing, organizational support, and capacity building. He highlighted Saudi Arabia's advanced security structures and extensive experience, emphasizing that Syria has already benefited substantially from this collaboration. Al-Baba indicated that the coming period could see Saudi Arabia providing specialized training to Syrian units and personnel. In recent months, several high-level meetings have taken place, including talks early last month in Riyadh between Saudi Interior Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif and his Syrian counterpart, Anas Khattab. According to the Saudi Press Agency, Prince Abdulaziz stressed that the meeting was held under directives from King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, reflecting the Kingdom's commitment to supporting Syria's stability and sharing expertise. Discussions also focused on setting mechanisms to implement the Crown Prince's instructions to deliver comprehensive support to Syrian institutions. Al-Baba explained that security cooperation is primarily focused on countering two key threats: narcotics trafficking, particularly captagon, and terrorism linked to ISIS remnants and sabotage cells that carried out attacks in March. Just last week, the two interior ministries announced a significant joint operation in which Syrian authorities, acting on Saudi intelligence, seized large quantities of amphetamine tablets hidden inside industrial sites in Idlib and Aleppo provinces. The shipment was intended to be smuggled across the border. According to al-Baba, the operation successfully disrupted the movement of tens of thousands of captagon pills, describing it as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle smuggling networks linked to remnants of the former regime. He said many similar operations remain undisclosed due to operational sensitivities. In April, Saudi Arabia hosted a Syrian security delegation for an in-depth review of the Kingdom's policing practices and advanced security systems to help modernize Syria's own institutions. Talks between the two ministers also addressed broader cooperation in areas such as counterterrorism, fighting organized crime, border protection, and intelligence sharing. Officials underscored that this partnership aims to create sustainable mechanisms to improve stability and security across Syria.
