Fire tears through Edinburgh flat as residents evacuated and street sealed off
Police, the ambulance service and at least 25 firefighters responded to the incident at a block of flats on Gunnet Court, Muirhouse.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service received the call shortly before 11pm on Thursday night, June 19, and mobilised five pump appliances and a height vehicle.

Terrifying images from the scene show a firefighter battling orange flames coming from a 3rd floor flat as black smoke can be seen billowing from the building.
The height vehicle was used to extinguish the blaze as the firefighter could be seen spraying water into the flat while being elevated by the appliance while the whole apartment was engulfed in flames.
The area, including Muirhouse View, was taped off by emergency services as several police cars could also be seen.
It is understood residents were evacuated as a group of people could be seen standing behind a cordon watching on.
The SFRS confirmed hero firefighters battled the blaze for three hours as they left at around 2am on Friday, June 20.
A spokesperson said: "We received reports of a fire at a flat on Gunnet Court, at Muirhouse View, at 22.50 hours on Thursday, June 20. We mobilised five appliances and a height vehicle.
"The fire on a third floor flat was extinguished and the last appliances left the scene at 2am. Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service were also in attendance."
It is currently not known if there were any casualties. The Scottish Ambulance Service was approached for comment.

Speaking to Drum Sisipho tells us she was born and bred in Cala - Eastern Cape but now resides in Cape Town due to work purposes. At the time of the incident, she was back home in Cala for a ceremony that was held by one of her initiates as she's a traditional healer. She alleges that on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, she went to the local police station for personal matters and that's when she was met with the horrific ordeal. As she was tending to the matter she went to the police station for, she saw the police officer in question whom she's acquainted to as he is the father of her nephew and thought she should greet him given that it's been long since they last saw each other. She says that she also wanted to ask about her nephew as well. Sisipho alleges that she greeted him by referring to him as her nephew's father, which prompted him to respond aggressively. 'I went to the police station accompanied by a close family friend and as I was done, I saw him and decided to greet and ask how my nephew is since my cousin passed away, and I know him through her since they were romantically involved together. 'I didn't take his words seriously and I was trying to brush what he had said off, and I asked him jokingly because I know him, I've interacted with him before, I asked why he's saying he doesn't want people to be over familiar with him, I still had a smile on my face, and in a blink of an eye he slapped me, and I don't know what influenced his behaviour to act like that as I was not even provocative towards him, I just greeted him that's all,' she said. 'I was still in shock trying to process what had happened and I asked him why he slapped me, and he said he'll do it again and as he said it, he was getting closer to me but fortunately was prevented by the person who had accompanied me to the station,' she added. Sisipho claims that she then requested to speak to the station commander from one of the officers who was on duty but was told he's in a meeting and was instead given his contact number and she called him but was advised to open an assault case against the officer which she subsequently did. 'Bear in mind as he slapped me there was a long queue at the station and people saw him stripping me of my dignity and his two colleagues did too. The two police officers who were present weren't much help as I got tended to by the other police officer who was not there during the assault, but eventually I filed the case at least I thought so. And I was told by the officer handling my case that she had done everything and because I don't live there and was there for a short period of time I inquired in an effort to get more information as to what was to happen from there on and she told me I'll receive an SMS the next day with the details of my case. She then took the issue to social media, specifically Facebook, where it gained significant traction and attention. 'I decided to take things into my own hands and because I have a huge following on Facebook, I used that in my quest to getting justice, and mostly because I was no longer in Cala now to go there and inquire about this,' she says. Following her post, several other victims came forward alleging that they had experienced similar treatment at the hands of the same police officer. Notably, the police officer in question took to social media to respond to the allegations, but his posts showed no remorse for his actions. supplied supplied 'Many more other women under my post's comments section also came out and said they've also suffered the same ill-treatment and brutality from him but were never brave enough to speak out as they were scared for their lives, so this is something he does at that police station but he's still there serving,' she stressed. Sisipho furthermore states that she later received an SMS notification about her case being opened only after the uproar social media made, leading her to suspect that the station may have been prompted to take action due to the public attention. 'Later that evening I received the SMS notification that I was meant to receive a day after filing the assault case, meaning had I sat back and relaxed they were not going to do anything about it, they'd let him walk away with it like with the other victims.' 'This has really taken a toll on me, my ear hurts so much, and I can't hear properly anymore, and I occasionally get severe headaches that require me to see a Dr,' Sisipho mentioned. We were subsequently informed by the communications team that the Cala police station had indeed opened a case of assault against the officer in question. According to the communications team, 'Cala police opened a case of assault against the police, and the case was transferred to IPD for investigation,' reads the comment. The case is still under investigation.

R1000 Bail for two Evaton police officers accused of murdering fellow cop
The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) has called for the killings of police officers to be treated as treason. This after two police officers, Sergeant Piet Matsoso (38) and Sergeant Siyabonga Kunene (31) together with their friend Hofney Morobe (36) made their first appearance at the Sebokeng Magistrates court today for the alleged murder of another police officer, Constable Gift Mokoena. The accused handed themselves over to the police on Monday (30th June) following intense police investigations. The trio is facing charges in connection to an incident that occurred on the evening of 16 May 2021. The three officers stationed at Evaton police station were off duty and driving around the Golden Gardens area with their friend before the terrible ordeal. The officers allegedly spotted a vehicle suspected of being involved in a house robbery and began pursuing it. The car is said to have stopped at a nearby BP petrol station, where the accused officers confronted and allegedly assaulted the four male occupants in the pursued vehicle. Honfey Morobe, accompanied by Matsoso and Kunene, allegedly drove the victims around before handing them over to members of the Community Policing Forum (CPF). Unfortunately, a mob attack ensued. Morobe and Mokoena allegedly joined the community members in assaulting the suspects. In the midst of the assault, Morobe allegedly walked away from the group, took Matsoso's service firearm from the vehicle, and fatally shot Mokoena. The deceased cop was rushed to Nkanyezi Private Hospital in Sebokeng, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The National Prosecuting Authority's spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana says that the state did not oppose the release of the accused on bail on basis that they handed themselves over. They face an array of charges including murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, robbery with aggravating circumstances, defeating the ends of justice, and handling a firearm while under the influence of alcohol,' says Mahanjana. Mahanjana adds that the addresses of the accused have been verified and the prosecutor submitted an affidavit by the Investigating Officer, Warrant Officer Nyongwana, confirming that the investigation is complete and that the witnesses are not known to the accused people, therefore posing no risk of interference. The matter was postponed to the 4th of September 2025 for a directive from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) spokesperson Richard Mamabolo expressed concern over ongoing police killings in the country. 'Law enforcement officers have become targeted victims of the worst crime, with attacks and killings escalating in South Africa. The stability of the country has become under attack with officers being killed. Some are attacked while guarding inmates, traffic and police officers are ambushed when conducting potential firearms and uniforms get stolen with the probable intention of committing further crimes. Man injured after shooting on DDOT bus, police searching for suspect
One person was injured after a shooting happened Wednesday morning on a Detroit Department of Transportation bus, police said. The incident happened about 7:25 a.m. in the area of Eight Mile Road and Sherwood Street. The victim, a 26-year-old man, was shot in the upper chest, Detroit police said. He was taken to an area hospital. Police crews and K-9 teams are searching the area for the suspect, who police believe picked up a ride from someone else. The suspect left behind a backpack, and the evidence unit is checking that, police said. Police are not certain of the relationship between the two. This is a breaking news situation.
