GREEN, Ohio (WJW) – Family and friends are remembering 13-year-old Matthew Schultz after he was killed in an accident during the Memorial Day parade in Green on Monday.
Just one day after the accident, the community is coming together in support of the family and for those who knew him best.
'I'm speaking on behalf of the Schultz family who is experiencing an unimaginable heartbreak after the tragic loss of their beautiful beloved son Matthew.'
'A bright light': Teen who died after fall from Memorial Day parade float in Green remembered as 'loyal and funny'
While the family continues to mourn in private, their close friends arspoke on their behalf during a news conference in Green on Tuesday morning.
'The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to everyone who has reached out with love and support and prayers, all the support over these few days,' family spokesperson Danielle Paciorek said.
Flags now flying at half staff throughout the city of North Canton in honor of the 13-year-old killed after falling off a parade float.
He is being remembered as a bright light full of curiosity, laughter and love. He had a passion for Star Wars and his favorite snack in the world was Fruit Roll-Ups.
North Canton City Schools declined to comment on the tragedy, saying in a statement that they are focusing on supporting students and staff during this difficult time.

In addition to grief counselors at North Canton High School, a GoFundMe page has been set up to help ease the family's burden of funeral expenses and bills — allowing them to focus more, friends said, on healing.
'Matthew's absence leaves a hole that can't be filled, but his spirit will live on in everyone he touched.'
Grief counselors are being made available until 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Details on funeral arrangements have not yet been released, but services will more than likely be held at Christ the Servant Parish where Matthew was an alter server.

Ben Askren released from hospital after grueling double-lung transplant recovery

Former UFC fighter Ben Askren announced he was released from a hospital Tuesday after a battle with severe pneumonia led to a double-lung transplant. The 40-year-old Askren posted a video update from his vehicle, which his wife Amy was driving after he was released from the hospital. On "day 59," Askren explained how he lost 50 pounds while being hospitalized. Even worse, he described coming close to dying. "I'm out, with my beautiful wife. Supportive. Man, that was a long journey, and it's not over because I still can't really walk," Askren said in the video. "I [have to] keep reteaching myself to do that, among many other things. I guess I can make light of it because it was me, and I don't really remember it. But Amy, how close was I to dying?" After a pause, Askren's wife responded, "Too close. A few times." "Ah, man," Askren continued. "I don't remember 35 days of this journey, but I think surgery was 24-25 days ago. It was hard, it was hard. And I said this already in one of my videos, but the support you guys gave me, whether it was sending a GoFundMe, whether it was helping my kids and wife get through it – I had friends from all over the country come to visit and hang out for a couple of days – it meant so much. It was so great to just have all this support and all the love, and hopefully I'm not in this situation again for a really, really, really long time. I plan on living a while. "So, thank you guys, again. All the positive support. All the comments online. Everything. It means so much. Love you guys." In a previous video, Askren said it was "like a movie" that he didn't remember anything from May 28 to July 2. I only died four times, where the ticker stopped for about 20 seconds," he said. "But I got the double lung transplant. I made it out to the other side of it. Gaining quite a bit of strength. Learning to use everything again. I was on the scale yesterday, 147 pounds. I haven't been 147 pounds since 15 years old. … So, that was a battle. I don't remember most of it." Amy Askren said in early July her husband received a donor for the double lung transplant and was asking for prayers. Askren recently signed with Real American Freestyle, the Hulk Hogan venture hoping to popularize professional freestyle wrestling. The 40-year-old was an NCAA champion in the 170-pound division in 2006 and 2007 and competed for Team USA in the 2008 Olympics. He won gold medals at the 2005 Pan American Championships and the 2009 World Championships. Askren fully transitioned to MMA fighting when he debuted in Bellator in 2010. He competed in ONE Championship before moving to the UFC. Askren fought Robbie Lawler and won by submission at UFC 235 before falling to Jorge Masvidal. Then, in 2021, Askren fought Jake Paul in a boxing match, and he was knocked out in the first round.

Tuscarawas County man infected with La Crosse virus

UHRICHVILLE, Ohio (WJW) — A Tuscarawas County man is recovering after health officials said he recently contracted the La Crosse virus. The Tuscarawas County Health Department was notified about the confirmed human case on July 17. The La Crosse virus is a viral disease that spreads to humans when bit by infected eastern tree hole mosquitoes, which typically reside in wooded and forested areas. The patient, a 66-year-old Uhrichsville man, was hospitalized after developing viral meningitis from the disease. He has since been released and is recovering at home, the health department said. Malcolm-Jamal Warner, 'Cosby Show' star, dies at 54 This is Tuscarawas County's first confirmed human case since 2021, but according to health officials, Ohio reports an average of 20 cases per year. 'La Crosse virus is rare in Ohio, and we don't want anyone to panic,' said Tuscarawas County Health Commissioner Katie Seward. 'We are simply asking Uhrichsville area residents to be careful and talk with their medical providers about any health concerns.' According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most people infected with La Crosse don't have any symptoms, but people who do may experience fever, headaches, nausea, vomiting and lethargy. Severe cases typically occur in kids under 16 years old, including symptoms like seizures, coma, paralysis and other neurological issues. The infection is deadly in less than 1% of cases, health officials said. There are no vaccines for La Crosse, health officials said, so the best way to combat the virus is to prevent mosquito bites. Why Dairy Queen can't legally call its product ice cream Residents are encouraged to use insect repellant while outdoors. They can also wear clothes that cover their skin to stay protected.
