Summer makeup trends: ghost lashes, tinted SPF & cool tones

RTÉ Newsa day ago

The make-up mood of summer 2025 feels lighter in both texture and spirit than last year.
Heavy blush, ultra-skinny blows and diamante eye looks were huge in 2024, but (rather predictably) they haven't stood the test of time.
This summer we're seeing a collective shift toward freshness – natural eyes, frosted finishes and a rise in skincare-led products. So, make-up artists share their favourite trends that your should try this season.
Tinted SPF
Any dermatologist will tell you, the best thing you can do to prevent skin laxity and wrinkles isn't Botox or exosome treatments, but daily SPF.
However, sun creams and SPFs have traditionally been either too oily, too chalky or too white cast to wear every day or sit comfortably under make-up.
This is why virtually every make-up brand is now releasing their answer to the problem: tinted SPFs.
"One of the biggest make-up mistakes I see is people not wearing SPF under their make-up," says CCO and founder of her namesake brand, Charlotte Tilbury. "It is so important to wear SPF every day, even when it is not sunny outside, which is why we created the UV flawless poreless primer."
"The rise in popularity of K-beauty this year has had an influence on our summer make-up trends. There is a lot of emphasis on skincare and 'skinimalism'," says celebrity and Strictly Come Dancing make-up artist Ariane Young.
Tinted SPF, she explains, allows for "minimal coverage [and] evens out your skin tone while also giving a hydrated glowy look."
Compared to BB or CC creams, tinted SPF is lighter and lends itself to the growing appetite for low-effort beauty. "If you love that 'no make-up, make-up' look," Young says, "a tinted SPF is your best friend."
And unlike most bases, the more you wear it, the better your skin will look, preventing pigmentation and redness.
Cool-toned eyes
A nostalgic nod to early-2000s shimmer is making its way back into our make-up bags.
Icy whites, sheer lavenders and frosted blues are back, only this time they're less Paris Hilton and more Hailey Bieber. "While icy, cool-toned eyeshadows were incredibly popular back in the late nineties and early Noughties, they were often chalky, hard to blend and unforgiving," explains Tilbury.
"We don't want it to look like the Tin Man!" says Young, "the trick is to pick a focal point to avoid going too frosted with everything."
A single frost-toned eye against matte skin and a neutral lip keep the look more mature.
"Blend and diffuse the colour all over the lid so you have a light wash of colour," says Young, and if you're not confident with eyeshadow, "you can always add a pop of colour with a fun eyeliner colour. This trend is all about having fun with make-up and is perfect for festival season."
If you're not used to icy tones, "there are ways of incorporating cooler-toned make-up into your everyday staples by swapping out your warm eyeshadows and gold glosses for greyer-inspired shades," explains MAC Cosmetics senior make-up artist for the UK and Ireland, Carly Utting.
"This may sound scary if you're used to bronzes and warm tones, but a balance of both works wonders!"
She loves pairing a cool toned lipliner with a honey lipstick in a nod to the Nineties.
Ghost lashes
Subtle and almost imperceptible, the ghost lash has emerged as this summer's most biggest trend. Wearing make-up without mascara may instil fear in most, but thick coats of mascara and showy falsies are no longer the go-to.
Make-up artist Mira Parmar describes it as "a minimalist, no-mascara or barely-there lash look," one that's become a red carpet favourite for celebrities like Zendaya, Sophie Turner, Hailey Bieber and Lily-Rose Depp.
"This effortless style gives your lashes a much-needed break from heavy products, looks naturally elegant, and saves time, making it a perfect match for the 'clean girl' aesthetic," she says.
But this isn't simply a fleeting fad, as Parmar says, "It's more than just a trend, it marks a shift toward natural beauty and skin-first makeup, which is rooted in authenticity, minimalism and self-care."
Diffused lips
Crisp, hyper-lined lips are out and the messy, diffused, French girl lip is in.
"Creating the perfect lip shape is out, instead [people are] going for a more blended and blurred lip line," says Young.
"There's a move towards a sheerer coverage plumped lip, enhanced by liner and filled with just gloss," says Utting, who says natural lips with a slight sheen is a trend "growing at a rapid rate."

Kneecap at Glastonbury: Irish group confirm their set will be streamed by BBC despite UK government calls for a ban

It comes after one of the band's members, Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, 27, was charged with allegedly displaying a flag in support of UK-proscribed terrorist organisation, Hezbollah, while saying 'up Hamas, up Hezbollah' at a gig in November last year. Last week the rapper, who performs under the stage name Mo Chara, was cheered by many hundreds of supporters as he arrived with bandmates Naoise O Caireallain and JJ O Dochartaigh at Westminster Magistrates' Court in Free Mo Chara T-shirts. He was released on unconditional bail until the next hearing at the same court on August 20. Last week Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said it would not be 'appropriate' for them to perform in the slot, which is due to go ahead on the Somerset festival's West Holts Stage at 4pm on Saturday. The set is available on the BBC iPlayer in the UK, but not in Ireland. It is unclear if the BBC TV broadcast later this evening will show part of their set. We use a number of different Social Media outlets to manage extra content that can set cookies on your device and collect data about your activity. Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch also said the BBC 'should not be showing' the trio's set in a post on social media last week. Badenoch said in an X post, which was accompanied by an article from The Times which said the BBC had not banned the group: 'The BBC should not be showing Kneecap propaganda. 'One Kneecap band member is currently on bail, charged under the Terrorism Act. 'As a publicly funded platform, the BBC should not be rewarding extremism.' Kneecap are not listed as one of the acts being shown live by the broadcaster. Michael Eavis, creator of the Glastonbury Festival said, in an apparent backing of Kneecap, that if people didn't like the politics of the festival, they could 'go somewhere else'. Ahead of the group's set, an Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson told the PA news agency: 'Ticket-holders can once again expect to see uniformed officers on site at Glastonbury Festival 24/7 throughout the festival as part of our extensive policing operation ensuring it is safe for everyone attending, as well as those who live nearby.' Neil Young, best known for songs such as Rockin' In The Free World, Like A Hurricane and Cinnamon Girl, will headline the festival's Pyramid Stage on Saturday night with his band the Chrome Hearts. The BBC confirmed that Young's set will be broadcast live after it initially agreed not to show the concert 'at the artist's request'. Another act expected to draw a big crowd is Brat star Charli XCX, who will headline the Other Stage around the same time Young and Grammy Award-winning rapper Doechii will also perform. The 1975 headlined the festival's Pyramid Stage on Friday night, with the performance seeing singer Matty Healy joke he was his generation's 'best songwriter'. After performing Part Of The Band he sat on a stool while smoking and sipping his drink, Healy said: 'What this moment is making me realise is that I probably am the best songwriter of my generation. 'The best what they say, a poet, ladies and gentlemen, is what I am. 'Generational words and I just wanted to remind you, over the next couple of minutes, these lyrics are poetry, I believe.' The band then launched into Chocolate from their 2013 self-titled debut, before Healy remarked 'I was only joking about being a poet' at its conclusion. Made up of four school friends, the group comprised of singer Healy, bassist Ross MacDonald, guitarist Adam Hann and drummer George Daniel were headlining the festival for the first time. Friday also saw a performance from Scottish music star Lewis Capaldi who told the Glastonbury crowds 'I'm back baby' as he played a surprise set, two years after a performance at the festival during which he struggled to manage his Tourette syndrome symptoms. The musician, who announced a break from touring shortly after his performance at the festival in 2023, has just released a new song called Survive. He told fans: 'It's so good to be back. I'm not going to say much up here today, because if I do, I think I will probably start crying.' He ended his performance with Somebody You Loved, the track that Glastonbury crowds helped him to sing when he struggled with the condition which can cause physical and verbal tics in 2023. Earlier on Friday, alternative pop star Lorde surprised fans with a secret set at Worthy Farm, performing her latest album Virgin, which was released on Friday, in full. Scottish indie rockers Franz Ferdinand brought out former Doctor Who actor Peter Capaldi during their Other Stage set while they were playing Take Me Out, one of their best-known songs. Celebrities who have been spotted at the festival include singer Harry Styles, Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne and Stranger Things star Joseph Quinn. Friday saw hot dry weather which hardened the Worthy Farm surface after rain in the early hours of the morning, with festival goers expected to see temperatures in the mid-20s on Saturday. The Met Office's Grahame Madge said: 'We anticipate highs of 26C on Saturday, with high levels of humidity. By Monday temperatures can be anticipated to be over 30C. 'There is always the chance of a light shower, but there is nothing in the forecast that suggests anything heavier for Saturday for Somerset.' Avon and Somerset Police said there had been 38 crimes reported at the festival and 14 arrests made. Performing in the coveted Sunday legends slot this year is Sir Rod Stewart, who previously said he will be joined by his former Faces band member Ronnie Wood, as well as other guests. Sir Rod's performance will come after he postponed a string of concerts in the US, due to take place this month, while he recovered from flu. The BBC is providing livestreams of the five main stages: Pyramid, Other, West Holts, Woodsies and The Park.

Holly Valance splits from billionaire Nick Candy

Former singer and Neighbours actress Holly Valance and Reform UK treasurer Nick Candy have split and are heading for divorce after 13 years of marriage, it has been reported. Australian-born Valance, 42, and billionaire property developer Candy, 52, are said to have broken up in recent weeks, according to The Sun. The couple, who have two daughters, met in 2009 and became engaged two years later before marrying in California in 2012 at a ceremony attended by 300 guests. A family friend told the newspaper: "This has been a very difficult period for both Nick and Holly, and they are keeping things private out of respect for their family. "The joint parenting of their two amazing daughters remains their top priority. "They've had to juggle a demanding lifestyle. Between family, public life, and Nick's intense work commitments, it's been a tough balance. "This is a family matter and they're doing their best to handle things thoughtfully. "Privacy is obviously very important to them both, so they can focus on what's best for the family." A spokesman for Valance said: "This is a private matter, and there will be no comment. The privacy of all parties involved is respectfully requested" The couple are high-profile figures within Reform UK and met Donald Trump with party leader Nigel Farage at the US president's Mar-a-Lago resort in 2022. After her stint in the Australian soap Neighbours where she played Felicity 'Flick' Scully from 1999, Valance had a music career, including the UK number one hit single Kiss Kiss released in 2002. She also reached the semi-finals of Strictly Come Dancing in 2011.

Neil Young's Glastonbury set will be screened live

In a reversal of its previous decision, Neil Young's headline set at Glastonbury Festival will now be shown live on the BBC on Saturday night, the BBC has announced. The corporation had previously said that the Canadian rock veteran's set would not be broadcast live "at the artist's request". A spokesperson said: "We are delighted to confirm that Neil Young's headline set from Glastonbury on Saturday will be broadcast live to audiences across the UK on the BBC." Young's set will be shown on the BBC iPlayer Pyramid Stage stream from 10pm, as well as broadcast on BBC Two and BBC Radio 2. A spokesperson said: "We are delighted to confirm that Neil Young's headline set from Glastonbury on Saturday will be broadcast live to audiences across the UK on the BBC." The 79-year-old, who recently played Malahide Castle with Van Morrison, will be part of the five-day celebration of performing arts and music with his band the Chrome Hearts. Earlier in the year the singer, who began his career in the 1960s with the band Buffalo Springfield, said he had initially turned down the offer to perform at the festival, saying it was "under corporate control" of the BBC in a message on his website. But he then backtracked and was announced as one of the headliners, saying he had "always loved" the event and he was looking forward to performing. Young last played Glastonbury in 2009.
