Karnataka's Ayush Shetty wins U.S. Open badminton title

The Hindua day ago
Karnataka found its newest badminton hero in Ayush Shetty, who won the prestigious U.S. Open title at Council Bluffs, Iowa. The 20-year-old Ayush became the first Indian to win a men's singles title since Lakshya Sen's victory at the 2023 Canada Open.
Consistent showing
Ayush's maiden international triumph came on the back of consistent showings in previous tournaments, where he upset top-tier players like Loh Kean Yew and Kidambi Srikanth.
The turning point in Ayush's journey came when he moved to Bengaluru from Karkala around eight years ago. Ayush, keen to pursue the sport seriously, got to work under the guidance of former international shuttler Krishna Kumar at i-SPORTS academy.
Ayush performed well at the junior level, and then moved to Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy. With Olympian Vimal Kumar and head coach Sagar Chopda as mentors, Ayush grew in stature. He won a bronze medal at the 2023 World Junior Championships, and finished as runner-up in a couple of international challenge/series tournaments.
Ideal platform
Sagar believes that this win will serve as the ideal platform for Ayush to achieve greater deeds. 'Before this, he had not won a single international tournament. Considering that, this big win will be a good confidence boost,' Sagar said.
Sagar added that these are the first steps towards realising Ayush's big goal — to break into the top-10 in the world rankings.
Ayush's grand run received praise from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who posted a congratulatory message on X. 'You have made Karnataka and India proud with your dedication and grit. Your triumph inspires every young aspiring player to dream big and strive hard.'

When Ishan Kishan Scored 200, I Knew This Is The End Of My Career: Shikhar Dhawan

Last Updated: Shikhar Dhawan admits he knew his India career is over after witnessing a young Ishan Kishan smash a record-breaking double-century. In August of 2024, Shikhar Dhawan announced retirement from all forms of Indian cricket and thus bringing down curtains on one of the most prolific ODI careers for an opening batter. Dhawan was nicknamed 'Mr. ICC' for his knack of stepping up in global tournaments. When India lifted the Champions Trophy in 2013, he won player-of-the-tournament award for being its top-scorer. He again topped the batting charts at the 2015 ODI World Cup and 2017 Champions Trophy. He averaged a stunning 65 in ICC competitions. In 167 ODIs, Dhawan made 6793 runs at 44.11 including 17 centuries and 39 half-centuries. India's Bangladesh tour of 2022 would become the final of his international career after he managed a mere 18 runs across three innings. The tour saw Ishan Kishan, then 24, smash a record ODI double-century, becoming just the fourth ever Indian to do. Having watched his younger teammate smash 210 off 131 with the help of 24 fours and 10 sixes, Dhawan realised this is the end of his India career. 'I was scoring lots of 50s, I didn't score a 100 but I scored lots of 70s. When Ishan Kishan scored that 200, my instinct told me, alright boy, this can be the end of your career. An inner voice came to me. And that's what happened. Then I remember my friends came over to you know, give me that emotional support. They thought that I would be very down. But I was chilling, I was enjoying," Dhawan told Hindustan Times. Dhawan scored 3 runs in that contest against Bangladesh as India registered a massive 227-run win. It would be the last time that the left-handed batter would appear in India colours. When asked if any of the India teammates got in touch with him after being dropped from the side, the 39-year-old replied in negative before adding that losing his place in the team isn't something that shocked him as he's been used to it since age-group cricket. 'No, it doesn't happen that way (teammates messaging after someone being dropped). Maybe I spoke to Rahul (Dravid) bhai. He messaged me. Everyone has their own journey and they are doing work or they are on tours, that's something very normal. We are used to it from the age of under 14, this is not the first time I am getting dropped or getting in," Dhawan said. First Published:

Ayush Shetty beat pressure all by himself at US Open: Mom

UDUPI: When Ayush Shetty clinched a noteworthy victory at the US Open Super 300 event, there was quiet pride and deep satisfaction in his home in Sanoor, Karkala, in Udupi district. His father, Ramprakash Shetty, a businessman, marked his son's achievement with a temple visit in Kerala, while his mother Shalmili and younger sister Aadhya celebrated with heartfelt joy at home. They recalled the sacrifices and relentless discipline that shaped Ayush's journey. Ayush began playing badminton at the age of eight, following his father's game in their backyard. In 2013, at just eight years old, he entered his first tournament- a district-level competition in Udupi. Ayush won the title despite never having received formal coaching till then. His mother speaking to TNIE on Tuesday recalled how quickly the journey of Ayush picked up pace. 'By 2016, he had topped the state rankings in the under 13 and 15 categories,' she said. His initial training began at John's Academy in Karkala, then at Badminton Mangaluru on alternate days. 'Even when he lost matches, he never let it break him. He would take the pressure, process it quietly and bounce back stronger. That is his strength- his inner drive to keep growing' she added. As Ayush continued winning at state-ranking events, the family decided to move to Bengaluru for better exposure. In Bengaluru, Ayush trained under Mohith Kamath at Badyzone, then with Krishna Kumar at iSports for four years. After Class 10, he joined the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, where he has been training for five years now under top coaches Vimal Kumar and Sagar Chopda. A former student of Prakruti National School, Sanoor, Karkala, Ayush excelled in studies too. Though he began a in Sports Science at Reva University, he later took up a job with Kolkata Railways as a catering inspector and is now pursuing from the University of Mysore through distance education. 'Ayush has always been calm, focused and determined' said Shalmili.
