A woman was suffocated by her partner who held a pillow over her face and punched her repeatedly. The victim thought she was going to die and armed herself with a kitchen knife.
Matthew Clarke, 41, assaulted his partner at her home in Tredegar on October 29 last year. He breached bail conditions after turning up at her house. While there he accused her of cheating on him and was physically abusive towards her to the point she took hold of a blade in order to protect herself.

A sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court on Tuesday heard the defendant entered the victim's home at 1.30pm while she was showering and he was aggressive towards her. For the latest court reports sign up to our crime newsletter.

He accused the victim of cheating and smashed her phone against a bathroom radiator before throwing it at her.
Later that day, the victim was in bed and she told Clarke to leave but he picked up a can of cider and hit her to the head with it before drinking it.
He then shook another can and opened it over her before also pouring another can over her. He claimed she owed him money and she responded by throwing a remote control at him.

Prosecutor Amelia Pike said Clarke returned to the victim's home at 10.30pm and he entered her bedroom where he was shouting and aggressive towards her.

The defendant continued to accuse her of being unfaithful, which she denied. The victim told him to leave her alone and said if he hit her again "that would be the last".

Clarke responded by beginning to strike her multiple times to her face and body using both hands.
He then got on top of the victim and straddled her arms before grabbing a pillow and holding it over her face.
The defendant did this on three or four occasions for minutes at a time and the victim could feel blows from him punching the pillow.

She was unable to breathe and feared she was going to die.
Eventually, Clarke stopped and said he wanted a cigarette and told the victim he "loved and hated her".
Ms Pike said the victim was "frozen in pain and in shock". He hit her again and she got out of bed, saying she was going to sleep in the living room, but he said if she did she would "get another beating".

The victim went to the kitchen and retrieved a kitchen knife. The defendant asked her if she was going to stab him or come back to bed.
She told Clarke to let her go and called for help from the doorway. A neighbour had called the police in relation to an unrelated matter and despite the defendant trying to prevent her from shouting, she was heard by officers who came to the door and arrested the attacker.

The victim, who suffered a black eye and bruising, told the court in her victim personal statement that she "thought she was going to die" when the defendant suffocated her.
She added: "I started having flashbacks and when I walked out the flat I never went back to the property. I couldn't sleep because I thought he was going to get me again or kill me. As a result of flashbacks of Matt harming me I went to my mother's in a different area to stay with her.
"I am suffering with problems with my mental health and flashbacks of what happened that night with Matt. I tried to kill myself three times over what he did to me and overdosed three times... I can't trust a man near me or even my own family.

"I see doubles of Matt everywhere I go and I'm completely still with fear. I don't want to go out anymore and get nervous when men are behind me. I don't see friends or even my brother as often as I used to as I don't want to go outside."
Clarke, of Market Street, Tredegar, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of criminal damage.
The court heard the defendant had 19 previous convictions, including five offences against the person including assault occasioning actual bodily harm for which he received a suspended sentence order he is now in breach of.

In mitigation, Gareth Williams said his client had a "difficult upbringing and childhood" and as an adult he suffered with alcoholism and homelessness.

Two Cardiff men sentenced for dumping waste on farmland

The offences took place in Cardiff and included dumping mixed household, building, and green waste in fields near St Mellons Business Park. Kyle Gordon Mason, 46, of Dickens Avenue, Llanrumney, and John Brian Janes, 52, of New Road, Rumney, were prosecuted by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) and sentenced at Newport Crown Court. Some of the affected land is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). John Rock, operations manager for NRW, said: "Waste illegally deposited can have a devastating impact on farming businesses and rural communities. "The waste can be extremely costly and time-consuming to remove and can be harmful to wildlife and livestock. "Kyle Mason and John Janes have shown a complete disregard to the environment by dumping their waste on farmland. "Mr Mason also avoided costs of legally disposing the waste collected through his business, which undercuts legitimate businesses who abide by the rules. "The joint working with Gwent Police on this case has been hugely beneficial and we'd also like to thank the Cardiff residents who provided supporting evidence for this case. "People should be vigilant of fly-tippers. "Avoid putting your waste into their hands by checking if they have a waste carrier licence at The investigation began in 2021. NRW found multiple van loads of waste dumped across three fields, each owned by different landowners. Evidence linking both defendants and businesses connected to Mr Mason was found in the waste. The investigation carried on into 2022. On June 10, 2022, surveillance footage captured by Liberton Investigations showed a transit flatbed vehicle—without number plates—entering one of the fields loaded with waste and leaving empty. Both men were interviewed during the investigation but initially denied the offences. However, they later pleaded guilty in court. Mason admitted to dumping five van loads of waste and was sentenced on August 1, 2025. He received 14 weeks' imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, and was ordered to pay £200 in costs to NRW along with a victim surcharge. Janes pleaded guilty to dumping a bag of household waste. He was sentenced earlier, on May 2, 2025, and was fined £500, ordered to pay £750 in costs to NRW, and a £200 victim surcharge. Sentencing for environmental offences is determined by the courts and considers the level of harm, culpability, and the defendants' financial means. NRW said large-scale fly-tipping or damage to Sites of Special Scientific Interest should be reported to its 24/7 incident communications centre. Incidents can be reported online at or by calling 03000 65 3000.

Showjumper and horse rider GUILTY of forcing underage girl into sex with them

WARNING: DISTRESSING CONTENT Guy Simmonds, 37, and Lauren Jarvis, 26, were today convicted of sexual activity with a child after targeting a girl they knew was under the age of 16 A showjumper and horse rider have been found guilty of forcing an underage girl to have sex with them. Guy Simmonds, 37, and Lauren Jarvis, 26, were both found guilty of engaging in sexual activity with a child following a trial at Cardiff Crown Court. Simmonds was found not guilty of five counts of the same charge. Cardiff Crown Court heard the pair engaged in a "so-called threesome" with the girl. Simmonds had sex with the girl and his co-defendant on the same night while Jarvis "participated willingly" in the incident. It comes after teenage thugs beat rough sleeper to death and laughed as he lay in street. Prosecutor James Hartson said there were "clear elements of grooming" on the part of Simmonds and told jurors that during the course of the trial they would see evidence in the form of text conversations between the defendants where they were "agreeing to a pact of silence" about it. The incident happened in 2024 in Jarvis' home, in the active presence of Jarvis, which Mr Hartson said the 26-year-old had participated "willingly" in, reports Wales Online. Mr Hartson told the jury that it was Simmonds' case that there was no sexual contact between himself and the schoolgirl at any time . He said Simmonds accepted being in a sexual relationship with Jarvis but denied any sexual contact with the complainant. Messages read to the jury showed Simmonds asking Jarvis when he should "pop over" for sex and Jarvis agreeing that it was "absolutely fine" with her. In a later message Simmonds checks whether the girl is there yet. "I don't want to turn up at the same time that her mum drops her off," he said. In further messages Simmonds, who ran a riding school in the Welsh village of undy, said in a text to Jarvis: "If anyone asks for sake of both of us nothing ever happened that night xx." Jarvis said in response: "Hey, who's she told? Oh god has she really, what's she trying to do, make our lives hell? Of course I will xx." Simmonds said messages with Jarvis about the encounter were 'banter and a wind up'. But a jury returned guilty verdicts in respect of both defendants in relation to one count of engaging in sexual activity with a child. Simmonds, of Acacia Avenue, Undy, Monmouthshire, was remanded in custody, and Jarvis, of Allt-Yr-Yn Court, Newport, was remanded on bail by Judge Lucy Crowther to appear for sentencing on September 29.
