Towards the end of his career, he featured for the Nagpur-based side as a 'Pro' and played a key role in their back-to-back Ranji Trophy and Irani Cup triumphs in 2017-18 & 2018-19. His 'partnership' with former India stumper Chandrakant Pandit, who was the team's head coach, worked wonders for Vidarbha's cricketing fortunes at that time. In another case of Vidarbha's Mumbai connection in the upcoming season, former Mumbai fast bowler Vishal Mahadik has been named as the Vidarbha Under-19 team's head coach. Mahadik made his Mumbai Ranji Trophy debut against Baroda under Sachin Tendulkar's captaincy in 1993-94. Poll Do you think Wasim Jaffer will positively impact Vidarbha's batting performance in the upcoming season? Yes, definitely No, I don't think so Maybe, it's too early to tell I have no opinion Jaffer has had stints with Punjab, Uttarakhand and Orissa as their head coach. The 46-year-old was also the batting coach of Punjab Kings from 2019-2021, and later the batting consultant of the Bangladesh Under19 and their high-performance team ('A' side). IPL Rumours: Sanju Samson to stay! Rajasthan Royals captain not going anywhere
MS Dhoni (left) and Sanju Samson Mumbai: Contrary to a lot of buzz, India's T20 wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson is not leaving Rajasthan Royals for any new franchise ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL), TOI can confirm. Since the end of IPL 2025, there has been plenty of speculation about the 30-year-old's future — that he would leave the Jaipur-based franchise and move to either the Kolkata Knight Riders or Chennai Super Kings . Samson is also the captain of the Rajasthan Royals. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'RR have decided not to trade Samson or any of their players for now. Samson is very much a part of the Royals set-up and the undisputed captain of the team,' a reliable source told TOI on Tuesday. Coming back from a right index finger fracture sustained during the home T20I series against England in February — which required surgery — Samson could play only nine games in IPL 2025, scoring 285 runs at an impressive strike rate of 140.39. He later missed a few games due to a side strain injury. In his absence, Rajasthan Royals were led by India's white-ball all-rounder Riyan Parag . Poll Which player do you think filled in best for Sanju Samson during his absence? Riyan Parag Vaibhav Suryavanshi Other players None of them Filling Samson's big shoes at the top of the order, Bihar's 14-year-old left-handed opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi made a sensational debut for the Royals, smashing a breathtaking 35-ball century against Gujarat Titans. The frequent injuries that Samson suffered last season led to speculation that the 'keeper-batter would be traded by Rajasthan Royals ahead of IPL 2026, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Samson opens the innings for India in T20Is and sometimes does the same for the Royals, who are coached by former India head coach Rahul Dravid. Afghan surfer rides wave of hope away from ‘locked' land
Afghan surfer Afridun Chennai: In a country without a coastline, the idea of surfing might seem absurd. Even more so in a nation that has endured decades of war. But for Afridun Amu, Afghanistan's first international surfer, the waves are a form of resilience: a way to reclaim joy, identity, and hope for the next generation of Afghans scattered across the world. War forced 38-year-old Afridun to leave Afghanistan when he was five. He learnt to surf in several countries and used the sport to connect Afghans who, like him, were forced to seek refuge. Afridun, who is now a dual citizen of Afghanistan and Germany, is the only competitor representing his motherland in the ongoing Asian Surfing Championships in Mamallapuram. Two of his teammates could not get their visas for the continental event. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'I want to keep Afghan surfing alive. If we had more athletes here, I probably would not even have participated. Since nobody received the visa, I wanted Afghanistan to be a part of it. I want to present a different image of Afghanistan. Most stories about the country have been focused on war, human rights violations and terrorism. While these are part of Afghanistan's reality, it's not the whole story. Showing that there is more to Afghanistan than just conflict is a key motivation for me,' Afridun told TOI . Poll How important is it to showcase positive stories from Afghanistan beyond conflict? Very important. Somewhat important. Not important. In 2018, Afridun organised a nationallevel event and that was probably the first time a surfing competition was held in the country. 'Although Afghanistan is a landlocked country, it has many rivers. There are decent static waves. Since the situation changed dramatically in 2021, there has been little scope to explore further.' Afridun has taken multiple steps to bring the Afghan surfers from across the world together. One such step was the formation of the Wave Riders Association of Afghanistan in 2012.
