Pixar taps ‘Elemental' director Peter Sohn for ‘Incredibles 3' as Brad Bird hands over the reins

The Hindu11-06-2025
Pixar has officially named Peter Sohn as the director of Incredibles 3, marking a major shift for the beloved superhero franchise. Brad Bird, who wrote and directed the first two films, will remain involved as screenwriter and producer but will not direct the third installment.
Sohn, a Pixar veteran known for directing Elemental and The Good Dinosaur, takes over a franchise that has grossed $1.8 billion globally. The first Incredibles debuted in 2004 and won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Its long-awaited sequel, Incredibles 2, was released in 2018 and brought in over $1.2 billion at the box office.
Bird's decision to step back from directing comes as he begins pre-production on Ray Gunn, his upcoming sci-fi noir project with Skydance. Despite the change in leadership, Bird is staying closely connected to Incredibles 3 as both co-writer and producer alongside Dana Murray (Soul).
Sohn's appointment reflects a longstanding creative relationship with Bird and Pixar. He has contributed to every Bird-led animated film to date and was handpicked by Bird and Pixar's Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter to carry the story forward.
The Incredibles series centers on Bob and Helen Parr (voiced by Craig T. Nelson and Holly Hunter), a married couple raising three super-powered children in a world where heroes have gone underground. Returning cast members include Samuel L. Jackson and Sarah Vowell.
No release date has been announced yet for Incredibles 3, which was confirmed at Disney's D23 Expo in 2024. Meanwhile, Pixar is preparing for the June 20 release of Elio, directed by Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi, and starring Yonas Kibreab, Zoe Saldaña, and Jameela Jamil.

Skin On Aamir Khan's Foot Came Off During Lagaan Shoot: 'He Just Tied It Up And Carried On'

Aamir Khan was also hit on the head 25 times with a ball during the shoot. Aamir Khan's portrayal of Bhuvan in Lagaan (2001) remains one of the most iconic performances in Indian cinema. Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, the film is set in 1893 during the British colonial rule in India and tells the story of a small village that challenges British officers to a game of cricket in a bid to avoid paying oppressive land taxes. Aamir Khan played Bhuvan with utmost conviction, and not even the skin of his foot peeling off stopped him! Filmmaker Apoorva Lakhia, who worked as an assistant director on the film, recalled the shoot of the film's climax in a conversation with Cyrus Broacha. He said, 'I remember, Anil Mehta (DOP) was looking through the camera and Anil's reaction was 'oh ****'. We don't know what had happened. And Aamir didn't stop. He took the entire run. He came out to the other side, sat down on the ground, and we realised, his entire skin of the foot had come off. But he just tied up and he carried on." He recalled another scene and said, 'There was a scene in which I was in charge of hitting Aamir with a ball. It was the scene where he gets hurt on the head with the ball. The DOP told me to hit Aamir hard, so the timing during the scene had to be perfect, and Aamir and my timing, in the beginning, was not correct because he would not turn in time, and the ball would hit his eye, face. Twenty-five times we had to do it before we got that shot correct." In the film, Aamir plays Bhuvan, a spirited and fearless young villager who dares to stand up against the British. His character inspires the other villagers, most of whom have never even seen a cricket match, to believe in themselves and unite for a common cause. More than two decades later, Aamir Khan's performance in Lagaan continues to be celebrated as a turning point in his career and a milestone in Indian cinema. Beyond acting, Aamir Khan also played a crucial role in the film's production. Lagaan marked the first venture of his production company, Aamir Khan Productions. It was a bold and unconventional project at the time—blending sports drama with a period setting and a three-hour-plus runtime. Yet, under his guidance, the film became a critical and commercial success, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. First Published:
