Alas Pilipinas Men outlast Thailand, complete sweep of Invitationals
After Thailand led 3-1 in the final set, the nationals made a 4-0 run to take the lead, before Leo Ordiales' attack went out. He made up for it however by scoring back-to-back to take a 7-4 lead. The Thais eventually caught up and led 10-9 before the Philippines made a 3-0 run capped by a Marck Espejo ace. The national team veteran had a service error but Buds Buddin came in clutch to put the Philippines at match point. Thailand salvaged one before Espejo punctuated the match.
Espejo led Alas' offense with 31 points from 24 attacks, 6 aces, and a block, while Louie Ramirez and Steven Rotter had 15 and 13 points, respectively.
Amorntep Konhan led the Thais with 25 points, while Chaiwat Thungkham and Kissada Nilsawai had 17 and 13 points, respectively.
Earlier, Jakarta Bhayangkara Presisi defeated the Hyundai Capital Skywalkers in five sets as well, 22-25, 25-12, 25-23, 20-25, 15-11.

Alas Pilipinas Men finished outside the podium again as they absorbed a 23-25, 25-21, 17-25, 15-22 loss to Vietnam to close out their campaign in SEA V. League Leg 2 on Sunday in Indonesia. The Filipinos made a gallant Set 2 win, but succumbed in the endgame following a massive closing run from the Vietnamese. The Philippines ended its campaign at the fourth spot with a 1-3 card while Vietnam is already assured of at least a bronze medal with a 3-1 record. Alas kept Vietnam at bay early in the fourth with rising power opposite hitter Leo Ordiales scoring back-to-back points on an attack and block to send the Philippines to a slim 8-7 lead. Vietnam, however, slowly established a separation when Thanh Hai Nguyen and Ngoc Thuan Nguyen brought Vietnam to a 12-9 cushion. The world no. 61 Vietnam then followed it with a 4-3 rampage capped by an attack error from Jade Disquitado as they zoomed to a 16-12 lead. Peng Taguibolos' quick play saw the Philippines pulling to within four, 14-18, but Vietnam rode on a strong close-out act with Thanh Hai Nguyen unleashing another kill from the middle to send them to the match point, 24-15. Hiep Pham punctuated Vietnam's commanding fourth-set display with a sharp push from the right side, leaving the Philippines defense in disarray. Later, host Indonesia and three-time gold medalist Thailand will duke it out for the top spot. Heartbreak for Alas Men as Thailand completes reverse sweep in SEA V.League
Alas Pilipinas Men failed to sustain their early momentum, falling victim to a stunning reverse sweep by Thailand, 25-18, 25-18, 14-25, 23-25, 7-15, in the SEA V. League Leg 2 on Saturday in Indonesia. The loss sent the Filipinos to a 1-2 card as they are now on the brink of finishing outside the podium anew while the multi-titled Thais improved to 2-1 to remain on track for four gold medals in a row. The Philippines staged a comeback in Set 4 with Peng Taguibolos punishing Thailand's floor defense with back-to-back aces, 10-12, but Amornthep Khonan and Chaiwat Thungkham proved to be the one-two punch for the Thais as they soared to a 23-20 cushion. Khonan sent Thais to set point before middle blocker Kissada Nilwasai completed a quick play that dragged the Philippines to another five-set duel. The Filipinos kept it close early in the final frame with Leo Ordiales unloading a kill from the right side for a 5-6 deficit. Thailand, though, retaliated with three straight points capped by another opposite kill from Khonan, 9-5. Alas could not solve the puzzle that was Thailand's net defense as the Leg 1 champions strung together two consecutive denials on Jade Disquitado and Ordiales for a 12-6 advantage. Ordiales would still come up with another kill, but three straight errors from the Philippines allowed Thailand to complete the mighty reverse sweep. Alas Pilipinas Men beat Cambodia, get first win in SEA V.League Leg 2
The Alas Pilipinas Men defeated Cambodia, 25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18, to barge into the win column of the second league of this year's SEA on Friday in Jakarta, Indonesia. The win came just two days after the Philippines fell short against the host country in Alas' campaign opener. In Set 4, the two teams were tied at 15 but the Philippines scored back-to-back to gain momentum. Cambodia then put a halt to Alas' streak but the latter held off the former as it made a 4-0 run after the Cambodians trailed 19-17. Cambodia answered back, but Alas eventually notched the win, The Philippines will play Thailand next on Saturday. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
