We've got some big-name phones coming to the U.S. marketplace over the next three months. Let's start with the foldable trio made up of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, Galaxy Z Flip 7, and the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE. Believe it or not, next Wednesday, July 9th, Samsung will unveil the latest iteration of its foldable models. As we told you the other day, reliable leaker Steve says that pre-orders will begin on the same day at 3 PM EDT. The phones will supposedly ship starting on July 25th. According to a new report, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and the lower priced Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE (Fan Edition) will carry Ingress Protection ratings of IP 48. That matches the IP rating of last year's Galaxy Z Flip 6 and indicates that as a clamshell foldable, Samsung has not been able to make the device impervious to dust. The report says to also expect an IP48 Ingress P rotection rating for the Galaxy Z Fold 7 which is the same exact IP rating that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 had. So all three of Sammy's new foldables will carry IP48 ratings. What does this mean? I'll tell you. The IP 48 rating is broken down to two different components. The "4" is for dust ingress and means that the phones are protected against solid objects larger than 1mm like larger particles but not fine dust. The "8" for water protection allows the Galaxy Z Flip 7 , Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE and Galaxy Z Fold 7 can be submerged in fresh water to a depth of 1.5 meters (nearly 5 feet) for no longer than 30 minutes and emerge unscathed. The rated battery capacity for the Galaxy Z Fold 7 , according to a tweet from the aforementioned Steve will be 4272 mAh. That will match last year's model and will provide a maximum 40 hours and 28 minutes between charges. Leaker says that the Galaxy Z Flip 7 will have a rated battery capacity of 4174 mAh and supply juice for a maximum of 42 hours and 4 minutes. The Galaxy Z Flip FE will feature a rated battery capacity of 3,887 mAh with maximum time between charges of 37 hours. The Galaxy Z Flip 3,4,5, and 6 were the top selling foldable models over the last four years. This year, the clamshell has competition from the beefed up Razr Ultra from Motorola. After Samsung releases its new foldables, Google is expected to release the Pixel 10 line on August 28th. The hotly anticipated Nothing flagship is here – and everyone is talking about it. Unfortunately for Nothing, most of the discussion is about the price and the design and let's just say that people aren't heaping praise on the Phone (3). We can't do anything about the design, but we can help with the price. The Nothing Phone (3), the 512GB model specifically, is already discounted by $100. You can think of this as a free storage upgrade. Note that the phone is still on pre-order and will only start shipping on July 15. The Phone (3) features a 6.67' 1260p+ 120Hz OLED display, not an LTPO panel, and is powered by the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4. It has four 50MP cameras, including a large 1/1.3' sensor in the main and a small 1/2.75' sensor in the 3x periscope. The ultra-wide and selfie cameras are also 50MP. The international model comes with a 5,150mAh battery with 65W wired and 15W wireless charging. The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge had its first major discount last week and is at around the same price right now (it went up $30). Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so we leave that to you. But we will say that this one is thin (5.8mm) and light (163g). Battery life from the 3,900mAh cell is predictably nothing special, but it's not too bad either. The 6.7' display has 1440p+ resolution and is an LTPO panel, befitting a flagship device. And the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy offers flagship performance. The 200MP main camera is responsible for zooming in and it does okay at 2x. There's also a 12MP ultra-wide. If the $200 gap between the Nothing and Edge seems too big, the Samsung Galaxy S25+ is cheaper. It's thicker (7.3mm) and heavier (190g) than the Edge, but it's still a lot thinner and lighter than the Nothing Phone (9mm and 218g). The display is again a 6.7' 1440p+ LTPO panel, the Snapdragon 8 Elite is the same overclocked 'for Galaxy' model as the Edge and you get 1,000mAh more in the battery. The main camera is only 50MP, but you get a dedicated tele lens with this one – a 10MP 3x/67mm module. This phone also has a 1440p+ LTPO display, a 6.82' OLED panel. The Snapdragon 8 Elite is the base chip and is still a good deal faster than the 8s Gen 4. The triple 50MP camera on the back of this one has a 1/1.43' main sensor and a bigger 1/1.95' inside the 3x/73mm periscope module. The battery is practically huge at 6,000mAh and super fast with 100W wired and 50W wireless charging. OnePlus 13 $50 off Read our review 16/512GB - $950 at Amazon US OnePlus 13R discounts are even rarer, however, this model is well worth keeping an eye on. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 may be one gen older, but it is faster than the 8s Gen 4 by a small margin. And the 6.78' 1264p+ display is an LTPO panel, unlike the Nothing. The 50+50+8MP is short on zoom (2x/47mm) and the ultra-wide has a lower resolution sensor. The battery is still huge at 6,000mAh, though it loses wireless charging (it still has 80W wired charging). The last thing to mention is the relatively low water resistance with an IP65 rating (vs. IP68 on the Nothing). Still, the 13R is more of a mid-ranger and doesn't pretend to be a flagship. OnePlus 13R Read our review 12/256GB - $600 at Amazon US As a reminder, Amazon Prime Day starts next week and will run for four days (July 8-11). You can already score some early Prime deals – it goes without saying that you need an active Prime subscription, but see if you can get the 1-month free trial. The Amazon Fire Max 11 is a great tablet for streaming and light work. It has a good quality 11' IPS LCD and stereo speakers. Storage is expandable, but you may want to pick the 128GB model anyway – for $50 more you get double the storage and no lockscreen ads (it costs $15 to remove the ads on the 64GB model). The Amazon Fire HD 10 is dirt cheap – we don't mean that in a bad way, when else have you seen a 10.1' tablet under $100? The storage upgrade is a no-brainer on this one (it's only $10), though note that it doesn't remove the ads – that's a $15 extra. There's also the Amazon Fire HD 8. It's more portable and the 32GB variant is cheaper. Plus, the 64GB model has a bit more RAM (4GB vs. 3GB), but it costs $5 more than the larger Fire HD 10 64GB. Take a rare look inside the lab where Apple tests the durability of its new iPhone models
According to Counterpoint, Apple has 200 durability labs that it uses to put hardware through extremely rough tests to make sure that products like the iPhone can survive real-life usage. It's these tests that are run inside the labs that allow iPhone units to retain 40% more value than Android phones in the market for refurbished devices. Counterpoint also points out that the iPhone owns a 56% share of the global refurbished smartphone market. It's not just the iPhone that holds more value than its rival, non-Apple devices. Counterpoint says that similar performance is seen with other products such as the Mac, iPad, Apple Watch, and AirPods. Counterpoint took notes of what it saw during its walk through one of Apple's durability labs. The first tests that Counterpoint mentioned covered how these products would hold up in different environments. An iPhone gets tested for water resistance from rain. | Image credit-Apple With Apple devices available in over 175 countries, the company tests how warm and humid conditions affect its products. Counterpoint spotted a test to see how 100 hours of exposure to salt affects Apple devices. Apple also exposes Apple products to sand from the Arizona desert to see how the iPhone responds when fine sand particles find a home inside the iPhone's speaker grille or charging port. Other tests used artificial versions of sweat and earwax created in the lab to see how these products hold up to constant exposure of the real things. A drop test measures an iPhone's ability to survive an accidental drop. | Image credit-Counterpoint Many of you are probably interested in learning how Apple tests its products to determines how they hold up to liquid and water exposure. In its labs, Apple simulates rain and other conditions that reveal the level of water resistance on individual products. First is the drip ceiling test which might not be actual rain, but is an incredible simulation. If the device passes this test, it is eligible for an IP X5 rating. The X means that the product has not been tested for dust resistance. Apple also tests its devices to see how they stand up to vibrations. | Image credit-Apple The next test measures how Apple's devices stand up to high pressure water jets from a distance. Passing this test gives this product an IP X6 rating. Apple tests for IPX7 and IPX8 ratings by using a pressurized tank simulating water depths of up to one meter and six meters, respectively. While this protection is valid for iPhones being submerged in clear water, the company tests other liquids, including sodas, juices, sunscreens, and perfumes. The maximum IP score available on the most recently released iPhone 16 series is the IP68 Ingress Protection rating for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. This rating means that these handsets are impervious to dust and can be submerged in up to over 19 feet of clear liquid for up to 30 minutes. The next series of tests measures how Apple products respond to drops. Counterpoint says that an "accidental drop" is among the top three reasons why a phone needs to be repaired. Counterpoint saw tests "simulating a variety of randomized, accidental drops that Apple products may experience in everyday use." To help with the drop tests. Apple has created a klutzy robot that drops devices at various angles and on various surfaces including asphalt, particle, and granite boards. Each drop is analyzed by Apple using a special app used by company engineers. The last test measures how Apple devices stand up to vibrations. Products are placed on a table that recreates the different types of vibrations that these products might face in transit or during other conditions. Counterpoint says that it was impressed with Apple's attention to detail, along with the large number of iPhone units tested before launch. The report says that Apple will test at least 10,000 handsets before unveiling the latest models.
