Lamb on the menu as Powys school pupils serve up a treat

Primary school pupils from across Powys took centre stage at this year's NSA Welsh Sheep 2025 event by showcasing their culinary creativity and celebrating Welsh lamb.
Pupils from Ysgol Mynydd Du in Talgarth, and Archdeacon Griffiths School in Llyswen, travelled to the host farm near Hay-on-Wye, where they participated in a series of interactive cooking sessions.
Guided by food professionals, the pupils prepared lamb meatballs using a variety of fresh ingredients including garlic, spinach, onions, chard, kale, and spices.
The initiative formed part of a wider collaboration between Powys County Council, NSA Welsh Sheep, and Castell Howell Foods, who generously supplied the lamb for the event.
In the lead-up to the event, the participating schools were among four local schools that featured Welsh Lamb on their lunch menus, with roast, boned and rolled legs of lamb served to pupils – highlighting the importance of local, nutritious food in school meals.
Cllr Jake Berriman, Leader of Powys County Council, said: 'This venture was a fantastic example of how we can connect our young people with the rich agricultural heritage of Powys while promoting healthy, local food.
'By involving schoolchildren in the preparation and enjoyment of Welsh lamb, we not only supported our local farmers and food producers, but also helped to build a deeper understanding of where our food comes from.
"It was a hands-on, memorable experience that brought learning to life and strengthened the ties between our schools, communities, and the rural economy.'
Edward Morgan, from Castell Howell Foods, said: 'This was a great opportunity to work with Powys County Council's catering team and promote the NSA event across schools in the area.
"Aligning school activities with farming and the supply chain is important, and we were delighted to help bring this event to classrooms.'

Ysgol Y Faenol has achieved the Cymraeg Campus Silver Award. Earlier this week, the school proudly received a certificate from Gareth Williams, of the Denbighshire Advisory Team, on behalf of Lynne Neagle MS, Welsh Government's cabinet secretary for education. The school's Welsh co-ordinator, Lisa Kay, said: 'It has been a significant journey since achieving bronze in 2019. 'And this success would not have been possible without the dedication of our fantastic Criw Cymraeg and the continued support from the whole school community. Anglesey: Sailing volunteers honoured for making waves

Jon Gamon and Richard Horovitz, founders of SEAS Sailability, received RYA Cymru Wales Impact Awards for their work supporting disabled people, their families, and carers to enjoy water-based activities. Based at The Conway Centre on Anglesey, SEAS Sailability offers inclusive experiences such as sailing, paddleboarding, swimming, and powerboating in a safe and social setting. The pair were nominated by fellow volunteer Ken Newing, who said: "It's a pleasure to nominate Jon and Richard for their continued effort over the years to make the sport more accessible." They offer inclusive experiences (Image: Karl Midlane) The charity also operates a wheelchair-accessible Wheelyboat, allowing even more people to get out on the water. Mr Gamon, who teaches outdoor education at Ysgol Aberconwy and the Conway Centre, said: "It's so rewarding to see the excitement and sense of achievement that people experience when they are able to get on the water and I enjoy being a part of that buzz. "You become part of a community and I like seeing the impact our activities have on the wellbeing and relationships of our participants and their carers. "It's something different they can all do together to build positive memories." SEAS Sailability supports 30 to 60 participants per session and shares its adaptive equipment with The Conway Centre, helping the facility deliver inclusive activities for schools and other groups. The charity now hopes to expand its collaborative model to other commercial centres, increasing opportunities for disabled people across Wales. Activities at SEAS (Image: Karl Midlane) Richard Horovitz, chair of trustees for SEAS Sailability, said: "We're based on the Menai Strait but there are people everywhere who would like to take part in what we do. "As a charity we're moving forward all the time and we're looking to support other Welsh centres to provide these activities because the demand is phenomenal. "We take out lots of people with all types of disabilities who wouldn't otherwise be on the water, along with their families and carers so they are able to share the experience and have fun together. "You only have to see the smiles to be inspired." The RYA Cymru Wales Impact Awards celebrate those who go above and beyond to inspire others to enjoy sailing and watersports.
